Open the magazine in its reading app, show the controls if they are hidden, and look for reading or display settings. Adjust text size for your normal viewing distance, set brightness for the room, then try available page-color and layout options. The exact controls depend on the app, device and publication format—and a scanned or fixed-layout page may not reflow like ordinary text.
Start with the controls inside the open publication
Reading settings are usually available while a book or magazine is open, rather than in the device’s general settings. Tap the page if the app has hidden its toolbar. Look for a settings menu, an Aa button, or a display-options control. Labels and locations vary across apps and platforms.

Set text size for your reading distance
Use the larger and smaller A controls or the app’s font-size setting, then read a few lines without leaning toward the screen. Increase the size if the text is difficult to make out at your usual distance; reduce it if the layout becomes awkward to follow. There is no single ideal size established by these help pages, so judge it in your normal reading conditions.

Apple Books, Kindle apps and Google Play Books document font-size controls, but whether they affect a particular magazine depends on its format and support in the app. Some apps also offer font or bold-text options.
Balance screen brightness with the room
Use the app’s brightness control where available and adjust it to suit the surrounding light. Brightness changes the screen’s light output; page color changes the background. They are separate controls, so try each on its own rather than assuming a dark page scheme replaces brightness adjustment.

Choose a layout that suits the publication
Depending on the app and publication, display settings may include line spacing, margins, alignment, page-turn behavior, continuous scrolling, orientation lock, or one- and two-page layouts. Try only options that appear for the open issue; a magazine’s design or file type may limit what can change.

- Try more spacing or wider margins if the text feels crowded.
- Switch between page turns and continuous scrolling if one way of moving through the issue feels easier to manage.
- Use one- or two-page display, where offered, to suit the screen and the publication’s design.
- Change one setting at a time so you can tell what made the page easier to read.
Apple Books documents controls for appearance, page-turn style, scrolling, font, spacing, justification and margins. Kindle lists options including spacing, margins, alignment, orientation lock and continuous scrolling, with availability dependent on platform and publication support. Google Play Books describes Auto, one-page and two-page layouts on Android, but notes that not all books offer more than one layout.
Know when text resizing will not reflow a page
Reflowable text rearranges to fit the selected size and layout. A magazine page that is a scan, image, PDF or other fixed layout may instead remain a complete page: increasing its size can enlarge the page without rearranging its words into a new text column. Amazon says visual adjustments depend on book support; Apple distinguishes PDFs and other fixed-layout documents in its scrolling instructions.

If the text-size control has little or no effect, the issue may be the publication’s format rather than a setting you missed. Check the app’s controls for that specific document and use only the zoom or scrolling options it actually provides. Apple’s instructions for Apple Books and Amazon’s Kindle accessibility guidance describe these format-dependent limits.

A practical adjustment sequence
- Open the magazine or issue and tap the page to reveal its toolbar.
- Open the app’s reading settings: Themes & Settings in Apple Books, Aa in Kindle, or Display options in Google Play Books for Android.
- Adjust text size first if the publication supports it. Read a few lines at your normal viewing distance.
- Set brightness for the room, then try a different page color or background if the app offers one.
- Test available spacing, margins, scrolling, page-turn and page-layout options one at a time.
- If the page does not reflow or a control is unavailable, treat that as a possible format or platform limitation and consult the app’s help for the specific publication.
These controls let you tailor the display, but vendor help documents their operation—not a universal comfort setting or a guaranteed fix for eye discomfort.
