How to adjust screen timeout and wake settings on a Galaxy Z Fold

By Freedom251 Team · · 15 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a Galaxy Z Fold, change the time before the active display turns off at Settings > Display > Screen timeout. To control how the screen wakes, use Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures on the Galaxy Z Fold6, where you can enable or disable Lift to wake and Double tap to turn on screen. The Fold6’s Always On Display controls are at Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always On Display.

These controls do different jobs: Screen timeout ends an active session, wake gestures turn the display on, and Always On Display determines whether selected information remains visible after the screen is off. Names and locations can differ by Fold generation, carrier, and software version, so Settings search is the quickest fallback when a label is missing. Longer timeout choices also consume more battery, so choose the shortest interval that fits the task.

Identify the behavior you want to change

Before opening a menu, match the symptom to the setting. This avoids changing a timeout when the real cause is a wake gesture, or changing Always On Display when you simply want the fully lit screen to stay on longer.

If you notice this Start with this control Why
The bright display goes dark while you are reading. Screen timeout or Keep screen on while viewing Timeout sets the idle period; viewing detection can keep the display active while you look at it.
The phone lights up when you pick it up. Lift to wake This gesture intentionally wakes the display in response to movement.
The display lights after an accidental tap. Double tap to turn on screen Turning this gesture off prevents a double tap from waking the inactive display.
You want the time visible while the main screen is off. Always On Display AOD shows selected information after the active display has shut down.
The phone reacts when a cover is opened or closed. Auto screen on and off, if available That accessory setting appears only with certain compatible cases or accessories.

Screen timeout, wake gestures, viewing detection, and Always On Display can be enabled in different combinations. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

What each screen setting controls

Screen timeout, wake gestures, and Always On Display are related but independent. Knowing which one affects the symptom prevents you from changing the wrong control.

Control What it changes Galaxy Z Fold path documented by Samsung
Screen timeout How long the active display stays on after you stop interacting with it. Settings > Display > Screen timeout
Keep screen on while viewing Uses the phone’s viewing detection to keep the display on while you are looking at it. Settings search; Samsung’s UK guide places it under Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
Lift to wake Turns the display on when the phone is picked up. Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures on Fold6
Double tap to turn on screen Turns the display on when you double-tap the screen while it is off. Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures on Fold6
Always On Display Shows selected information, such as the time and date, after the main display is otherwise off. Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always On Display on Fold6

A longer timeout does not change the wake behavior, and disabling a wake gesture does not change how long an already-active screen remains on. Adjust each control for the specific behavior you want.

Change the Galaxy Z Fold screen timeout

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Display.
  3. Tap Screen timeout.
  4. Select the duration you want.

The selected duration is the period the display remains active before it turns off without further interaction. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance describes Galaxy timeout choices ranging from 15 seconds to 10 minutes. A Samsung UK guide updated 20 January 2022 identifies 15 seconds as the default and 10 minutes as the maximum for the devices covered by that guide. Your Fold may show a different set of choices because the exact list depends on model, software, carrier, or region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of the value as an idle limit, not a promise that the phone will remain lit for exactly that amount of time in every situation. A button press, a case accessory, viewing detection, or another system event can change what you observe. If you continue touching the display, the idle countdown starts over.

Choice described in Samsung guidance When it makes sense Trade-off
15 seconds When you want the display to shut off quickly after brief use. Reading or checking a long item may require frequent touches.
Intermediate duration For ordinary messaging, browsing, and short tasks. The screen remains active longer than necessary if you put the phone down.
10 minutes For situations in which you need a long uninterrupted viewing period. Samsung says longer screen durations use more battery.

Choose the shortest interval that does not interrupt what you are doing. A short setting is sensible when the Fold spends time on a desk or in a bag; a moderate setting is more convenient for messaging and browsing; the maximum is useful only when you genuinely need a long uninterrupted view.

Samsung’s official wording is direct: “The longer the screen duration, the more battery life is used.” If battery life matters, raise the timeout temporarily for a reading session and return to a shorter choice afterward. The timeout setting itself does not improve charging speed or battery capacity.

Keep the screen on while you are looking at it

Keep screen on while viewing is intended for reading or watching when you are not touching the display. Samsung’s UK instructions show it under Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures; on some software versions it is easier to locate with Settings search.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Use the search icon or search field and enter Keep screen on while viewing.
  3. Open the matching result and turn the setting on or off.

When enabled, the phone can keep the screen active while its viewing detection indicates that you are looking at it. Availability is software-dependent, so the setting may not appear on every Fold or every carrier build. This feature is separate from a fixed Screen timeout value: timeout handles the normal idle period, while viewing detection can prevent that period from ending when you are still looking at the phone.

Viewing detection is most useful when the problem is limited to reading. It is not a reason to select 10 minutes for every situation, because a long fixed timeout leaves the display active whenever you put the phone down. If the display still turns off during a particular session, first check that your face is in front of the phone and that the feature is actually available and enabled on that software build.

Choose how a Galaxy Z Fold6 wakes

Samsung’s Fold6 guide lists two wake gestures in Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures. They affect the inactive display; they do not change the timeout countdown after the screen is already on.

Lift to wake

Turn on Lift to wake if you want the screen to activate when you pick up the phone. Turn it off if handling the Fold frequently causes the display to light when you only intend to move it. A phone being lifted from a table and a phone being jostled in a bag can both be interpreted as movement, so disabling the option can reduce unwanted wake-ups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Double tap to turn on screen

Turn on Double tap to turn on screen if you want a double tap on the inactive display to wake it. Disable it when accidental taps in a pocket, bag, or on a desk are causing unwanted screen activity. If you use a cover, test with the cover closed and open so you can tell whether the tap is reaching the display or the cover is pressing against it.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Advanced features.
  3. Tap Motions and gestures.
  4. Switch Lift to wake and/or Double tap to turn on screen according to your preference.

For troubleshooting, switch off one gesture at a time and use the phone normally. If the unexpected waking stops after one switch is changed, you have identified the likely trigger without having to disable every motion feature.

These gestures wake the display; they do not determine the idle time before it turns off. Set Screen timeout separately if the screen is going dark too quickly or staying lit too long.

Set up Always On Display on the Fold6

On the Galaxy Z Fold6, open Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always On Display. Always On Display can show information such as the time and date while the main screen is otherwise off.

Choose when it appears

Samsung documents these When to show choices:

Option Behavior Useful when
Tap to show Shows the Always On Display after you tap the inactive screen. You want quick information without leaving AOD visible continuously.
Auto Lets the phone decide when to show it according to its automatic behavior. You prefer the phone’s automatic handling rather than a fixed schedule.
Always Keeps the selected Always On Display information available continuously while the display is off. You regularly glance at the time or date without touching the phone.
As scheduled Shows it during the schedule you define. You want AOD during selected parts of the day rather than overnight or all day.
For new notifications Shows it in response to new notifications. You want a visual prompt for new alerts but not a continuously visible display.

Always On Display is not the same as extending Screen timeout. Timeout controls an active, fully lit display; AOD controls the information shown after that display has turned off. The available choices can vary with model and software version.

If you select Tap to show, a tap is expected because that is the chosen trigger; it does not mean AOD is malfunctioning. If you choose As scheduled, check the schedule when AOD appears at one time of day but not another. If you choose For new notifications, the display behavior is tied to incoming alerts rather than to the timeout value.

When a case or accessory controls the screen

Some Galaxy Z Fold configurations expose Auto screen on and off under Settings > Advanced features > Accessories. Samsung says this setting appears only with certain cases or accessories. If the option is absent, that does not indicate a fault; the connected accessory may simply not support the feature.

Use this accessory setting only when you are trying to control automatic behavior caused by a compatible case. It is independent of the normal Screen timeout and the Fold6 motion gestures. To isolate a case-related problem, remove or reposition the case temporarily and repeat the same open, close, lift, and tap actions. Do not assume that buying a case will add the option; Samsung only documents it for certain accessories.

Troubleshoot a Fold that turns off too soon

Increase the timeout for ordinary idle shutoff

Return to Settings > Display > Screen timeout and choose a longer interval. Samsung cautions that longer screen durations use more battery, so increase it only as far as your task requires. Test the new value by leaving the phone untouched on a stable surface; this separates normal timeout behavior from movement or button events.

Use viewing detection for reading

If the display turns off while you are still looking at it, search Settings for Keep screen on while viewing and enable it when available. This is preferable to selecting the maximum timeout when the problem occurs mainly during reading. Because availability depends on device and software, a missing search result means that particular Fold build may not provide the feature.

Check for accidental button or case pressure

A physical button being pressed by a case or by how the phone is held can alter the screen state. Remove or reposition the case temporarily and check whether the behavior stops. Inspect the side buttons for anything that prevents them from moving normally. Repeat the test with the Fold open and closed, because a cover can contact the phone differently in each position.

Separate timeout from AOD

If the bright display turns off but you still see the clock or another small item, that is AOD behavior, not a failure of the timeout setting. Open the AOD controls and choose the desired When to show option. If you want a completely dark display, change AOD rather than repeatedly increasing Screen timeout.

Troubleshoot a Fold that wakes by itself

Review both Fold6 wake gestures

Open Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures and turn off Lift to wake and Double tap to turn on screen one at a time. Testing them individually identifies which gesture is responsible. Leave the one you actually use enabled and disable only the source of the unwanted activity.

Check notification behavior

Applications can cause the phone to react when notifications arrive. Review notification settings for apps that send frequent alerts, then test again. The exact notification controls vary by software version and application, so concentrate on apps whose alerts coincide with the wake-ups rather than disabling every notification immediately.

Rule out a third-party application with Safe mode

Samsung recommends testing in Safe mode when a third-party app may be responsible. If unexpected waking stops in Safe mode and returns after normal restart, investigate recently installed or updated applications before changing hardware or replacing accessories. Safe mode is a diagnostic comparison: it does not permanently change your timeout or AOD choices.

Consider the charger and charging setup

Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance notes that some third-party wireless fast chargers can cause unexpected wake-ups and recommends Samsung-approved chargers. This is a diagnostic step, not a requirement for changing timeout or wake settings. Disconnect the wireless charger and test the phone on battery; if the waking occurs only on that charger, the charging setup is a likely factor. If it occurs away from charging as well, continue with gesture, notification, case, and Safe mode checks.

Find settings when your menu looks different

Samsung explicitly notes that menu names and options vary by model, software version, and carrier. Fold6 paths in this guide should not be treated as universal paths for every Z Fold generation.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap the search icon or search field.
  3. Search for Screen timeout, Always On Display, or Motions and gestures.
  4. Open the matching result rather than relying on a menu path that may have moved.

Search for the full phrase first, then try a shorter phrase such as timeout, AOD, or gestures if the exact wording produces no result. A search result is more reliable than assuming another Fold generation uses the same hierarchy.

Samsung’s Fold guide also uses the label Screen layout and zoom for Z Fold devices where another Galaxy model may show Screen zoom. That wording difference concerns display layout, not the timeout control itself, but it illustrates why labels can differ between devices. Do not change zoom settings to solve a timeout or wake problem.

A simple test sequence after changing a setting

  1. Change one control only, such as Screen timeout or Lift to wake.
  2. Use the phone in the exact situation that caused the complaint: reading, carrying it, placing it on a desk, or charging it.
  3. Observe whether the symptom changes before altering another control.
  4. If the symptom remains, restore the previous option if needed and test the next likely cause.

One-at-a-time testing is especially useful on a Fold because several events can look alike. A dark display could be normal timeout or an intentional AOD choice; a lit display could be Lift to wake, a double tap, a notification, a case, or a charger. Isolating each condition prevents unnecessary changes.

Practical setting combinations

For reading without frequent taps

  • Choose a moderate or long Screen timeout under Settings > Display > Screen timeout.
  • Enable Keep screen on while viewing if your software provides it.
  • Reduce the timeout again when finished if conserving battery is more important than uninterrupted reading.

For the least accidental waking

  • Disable Lift to wake and Double tap to turn on screen under Motions and gestures.
  • Check whether a case presses a button.
  • Review notifications from apps that wake or alert the phone frequently.
  • Test without a third-party wireless fast charger if the problem occurs during charging.

For quick time checks with the main display off

  • Open Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always On Display on the Fold6.
  • Select the When to show behavior that matches your routine: tap, automatic, always, scheduled, or new notifications.
  • Remember that this changes what is shown after timeout; it does not keep the fully lit display active.

For conserving battery when the phone is idle

  • Use a shorter Screen timeout, within the choices offered by your Fold.
  • Prefer Tap to show, a schedule, or notification-based AOD instead of Always if continuous information is unnecessary.
  • Turn off wake gestures that frequently light the screen while the phone is being carried.

These are preference combinations, not mandatory settings. Samsung’s documented trade-off is straightforward: longer active-screen durations use more battery. The best balance depends on whether your priority is uninterrupted reading, quick glances, or minimizing unwanted screen activity.

Key limits to keep in mind

  • Samsung’s cited timeout guidance covers 15 seconds through 10 minutes; the exact options on your Fold can differ.
  • The 15-second default and 10-minute maximum are identified in a Samsung UK guide updated 20 January 2022, not guaranteed for every region or later software release.
  • Longer timeout selections use more battery, according to Samsung.
  • Fold6 wake-gesture paths and the Fold6 Always On Display path are model-specific examples, not promises that every Z Fold generation uses identical labels.
  • Always On Display choices and viewing-detection availability can vary by model and software.
  • The accessory auto-screen option appears only with certain cases or accessories.
  • There is no need to buy a replacement phone, part, or accessory to change these built-in settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will changing Screen timeout disable Always On Display?

No. Screen timeout controls when the active display turns off. Always On Display has its own settings under Lock screen and AOD on the Fold6.

Why is Keep screen on while viewing missing?

Samsung says availability can depend on the device and software version. Search Settings for the exact phrase; if no result appears, that Fold build may not provide the feature.

Can I stop the screen from waking when I pick up the Fold?

Yes. On the Fold6, open Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures and turn off Lift to wake. If taps also wake it, disable Double tap to turn on screen there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a 10-minute timeout mean the screen always stays on for 10 minutes?

No. It sets the maximum idle period before automatic shutoff when there is no interaction. Other behavior, such as viewing detection or a physical button press, can affect what you observe.

What timeout should I use for the best battery life?

Samsung’s guidance says longer screen durations use more battery. Select the shortest available interval that does not interrupt your normal tasks; the cited guidance ranges from 15 seconds to 10 minutes.

Why does the clock remain visible after the screen times out?

That is likely Always On Display. On the Fold6, open Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always On Display and choose Tap to show, Auto, Always, As scheduled, or For new notifications.

Could my case be causing the screen to turn on or off?

It can. Check for button pressure and look under Settings > Advanced features > Accessories for Auto screen on and off. Samsung says that option appears only with certain cases or accessories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the Fold wakes only while it is charging?

Disconnect the wireless charger and test the phone on battery. Samsung notes that some third-party wireless fast chargers can cause unexpected wake-ups and recommends Samsung-approved chargers.

Why can’t I find the exact menu shown for another Fold model?

Samsung says paths and labels vary by model, carrier, and software version. Use Settings search for Screen timeout, Always On Display, or Motions and gestures instead of relying on a different generation’s menu path.

Should I set the timeout to 10 minutes for reading?

Only if you need that long interval. For occasional reading, try Keep screen on while viewing when available or use a moderate timeout, then return to a shorter setting to reduce battery use.

The Bottom Line

Use Settings > Display > Screen timeout to choose how long the active Fold display stays lit, and remember that Samsung’s guidance spans 15 seconds to 10 minutes with greater battery use at longer durations. For reading, try Keep screen on while viewing. On the Fold6, manage Lift to wake and Double tap to turn on screen under Advanced features > Motions and gestures, and configure AOD under Lock screen and AOD. If your menus differ, use Settings search and troubleshoot cases, notifications, third-party apps, and wireless chargers before assuming the phone needs repair.
