If Hulu looks too dark on your Roku TV, first compare it with another app or title, then adjust the picture mode while Hulu is playing. Roku picture settings can differ by input, and supported TVs use separate picture modes for HDR content. The available controls vary by model, so there is no universal brightness value or confirmed Hulu-specific fix.
Check whether the darkness is limited to Hulu
Play another app and, if possible, another title in Hulu. Note whether the image looks dark everywhere or only in one app or title. This comparison helps narrow down where to focus, but by itself does not establish the cause.

Change the picture mode during playback
- Start the Hulu video that looks dark.
- Press the Star/Options button on the Roku remote to open the picture settings. Menu labels and available options vary by TV model.
- Try a brighter available mode, such as Standard or Vivid, and compare the image in your usual viewing room. Roku also lists Sports and Movie; Movie is intended for darker rooms. Roku’s picture-mode guidance explains the available modes.
Make the change while the affected video is playing. Roku notes that picture settings can be stored separately for each input, so a change made in another playback context may not carry over.

If the video is HDR, check its HDR picture mode
On supported Roku TVs, HDR10 or Dolby Vision content can bring up picture modes specific to that format. Roku describes Dark as a balanced, cinema-oriented option; Normal or Bright may suit viewers who want a more visible image. Try a brighter option while the HDR video is playing, then judge whether it improves visibility without making the picture look unnatural. Roku’s picture-mode guide describes these HDR choices.
If the TV offers additional HDR controls, Roku recommends checking HDR Brightness, Color Temperature, and Local Dimming. Availability depends on the model; local dimming appears only on supported TVs. Roku’s dim-HDR troubleshooting guidance covers these controls. Roku also lists disabling HDR as a troubleshooting step for persistent dim HDR playback on supported devices. Treat that as a reversible test: if it does not help, restore your preferred setting. The steps and labels can differ by TV.

For a separate Roku player, check the HDMI setup
This section applies only if Hulu is playing on a standalone Roku player connected to the TV. Roku’s HDR setup guidance for Roku players recommends checking the TV’s software and HDR configuration for the HDMI input in use. For supported 4K HDR connections, it also identifies Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cables as options when an unsuitable cable is causing poor signal performance.

When the picture is still too dark
If changing the relevant picture mode and available HDR controls does not help, gather details before contacting Roku or Hulu support:
- Your Roku TV model.
- Whether Hulu runs on the TV itself or through an external Roku player.
- Whether the problem affects all apps and titles, or only Hulu or a particular title.
- Whether the affected video is HDR, if the TV identifies it as such.
Roku’s menus and feature availability depend on the TV model. The official guidance linked above covers general Roku display settings; it does not confirm a Hulu-specific cause for this symptom.
