You can change Ray-Ban Meta glasses’ playback, alert volume, notifications, voice controls, and privacy choices without buying new hardware. Use the right-temple touchpad for music, the Meta AI app for system alerts and notification rules, and the app’s Voice and privacy controls for voice features and data choices. The menu names and available features can change with the app version, glasses generation, language, and country; the paths below were checked against Ray-Ban’s US support FAQ and Meta’s Responsible Innovation guidance on October 13, 2026.
Know which control changes which sound or light
Ray-Ban Meta separates several settings that are easy to confuse. The touchpad changes streamed media playback and its volume. The Meta AI app changes system-alert volume, notification behavior, voice controls, and privacy preferences. Notification LEDs and the front-facing capture LED also have different jobs.

| What you want to change | Where to change it | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Music, podcasts, or other streamed media | Right-temple touchpad | Play/pause, track navigation, and media volume |
| Low-battery, capture, and other system sounds | Meta AI app → Settings → System Alerts → System Sounds | System-alert loudness; Ray-Ban says these sounds cannot be disabled |
| Phone lock-screen push notices | Meta AI app → Settings → System Alerts | Which glasses-related notices are sent to the phone lock screen |
| Spoken incoming messages | Meta AI app → Settings → Communication → selected phone or service | Announce messages and automatic message read-out |
| Voice commands and wake phrase | Meta AI app → Settings → Voice | Voice Control and separate wake-phrase preferences |
| Capture, voice, notification, and shared-information choices | Meta AI app privacy and data controls | Privacy preferences and available voice-recording management |
That separation matters: lowering media volume does not lower a low-battery warning, and changing the inward-facing notification light does not dim or disable the camera’s outward-facing capture indicator.

Before you start
Keep the glasses powered on and charged, the Meta AI app available on the connected phone, and Bluetooth enabled and in range. The app may show different labels depending on its release, the glasses generation, your account, and your country. If a control is missing, update the app and check the current Ray-Ban or Meta help material rather than assuming the glasses need to be replaced.

Control music and other media from the right temple
While audio is streaming to the glasses, use the touchpad on the right temple. The gestures are:
- Tap once: pause or resume playback.
- Double-tap: skip forward.
- Triple-tap: skip back.
- Swipe forward: raise media volume.
- Swipe back: lower media volume.
These gestures control streamed media, not the separate system-alert volume in the Meta AI app. If a swipe changes music but a warning remains loud, that is expected because the two volume paths are independent. Ray-Ban’s instructions are documented in its US frequently asked questions, accessed October 13, 2026.
What happens when you close the glasses
Ray-Ban says streaming audio pauses when the glasses are closed and reconnects through Bluetooth when they are opened again. This behavior applies to streaming playback; it does not provide a switch for system-alert sounds.
If a gesture is not recognized
Make the tap count deliberate and keep swipes on the touchpad rather than the frame. Check that the glasses are powered on and connected to the phone over Bluetooth. If playback itself is unavailable, resolve the connection or media-app problem first; changing notification settings will not restore a lost media stream.
Media volume versus phone volume
The temple swipes are the glasses’ direct media-volume control. A phone’s own volume buttons may also affect the active audio stream, but changing phone volume does not turn the system-alert control into a media control. When diagnosing a volume complaint, first identify whether you are hearing music or a glasses-generated alert.
Adjust system-alert volume—and understand the limit
- Open the Meta AI app.
- Open Settings.
- Tap System Alerts.
- Tap System Sounds.
- Move the available sound control to the level you want.
Ray-Ban identifies examples such as the low-battery warning and the capture sound. Its FAQ states plainly that these sounds “can’t be turned off.” You can make them quieter or louder, but there is no supported mute switch in this control.
If you are trying to silence spoken messages, this is the wrong menu. Spoken-message behavior is configured under Settings → Communication, described below.

A media swipe only changes streamed audio. It does not override the System Sounds setting, and the System Sounds setting cannot disable the alerts altogether. This is why a low-battery warning or capture sound may remain present after you pause music or lower media volume.

Manage phone notifications and spoken messages separately
Control system-alert notifications
Open Meta AI app → Settings → System Alerts to review notification preferences. Ray-Ban describes push notifications as important glasses information delivered to the phone’s lock screen; a low-storage warning is an example. These phone notices are distinct from sounds emitted by the glasses, so changing one does not automatically change the other.
For a phone-level lock-screen result, you may also need to review the operating system’s notification permission for the Meta AI app. The glasses app can expose its own preferences, while the phone controls whether an app may present alerts on the lock screen. The exact phone labels vary by operating-system version.
Turn incoming-message announcements on or off
- Open the Meta AI app and go to Settings.
- Tap Communication.
- Select the connected source you want to change: Your phone, Messenger, or WhatsApp.
- Switch Announce messages and/or Automatic message read out on or off.
These controls apply to the selected phone or service. A setting changed for one source should not be assumed to change the others. Message announcements can also depend on permission from the phone and on the connected service being authorized and available.
Announcement versus automatic read-out
The two switches describe different choices in the Communication area. “Announce messages” controls whether an incoming message is announced. “Automatic message read out” controls whether the message content is read automatically. Review both if you want to stop all spoken message content; changing only one may leave the other behavior enabled for that service.
Change the inward-facing notification light
The FAQ says the inward-facing notification LED can be set to Automatic, Low, Medium, or High. Automatic uses the glasses’ ambient-light sensor. This setting changes the brightness of the notification light visible to you; it does not dim or disable the front-facing capture LED that signals camera activity to people in front of you.
Turn Voice Control and the wake phrase on or off
- Open the Meta AI app.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Voice.
- Use the Voice Control toggle.
When Voice Control is enabled, pressing and holding the touchpad can invoke voice features. Wake-phrase preferences are listed separately in the Voice area, so disabling or changing the wake phrase is not necessarily the same action as changing every voice feature.
“How do I turn off Hey Meta?”
Open Settings → Voice and review both the Voice Control toggle and the separately listed wake-phrase preferences. The exact wording can change by app version, so use the labels shown in your account. Turning off a wake phrase should not be described as deleting previous voice recordings; those are separate privacy and data actions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLanguage and region qualifications
The US FAQ says most functional voice commands operate in English, French, and Italian, while Meta AI assistance is available only in English in that FAQ’s context. Do not treat that statement as a worldwide promise: languages, commands, and Meta AI availability can differ by country, account, app release, and device generation.

When voice commands are on or the wake word is activated, the notification LED pulses white according to Ray-Ban’s FAQ. That white pulse indicates voice activity; it is separate from the front-facing capture signal.
Understand capture indicators and where captured media stays
Meta explains that photos and videos remain on the glasses until you choose to transfer them to your phone through the Meta AI app. Meta’s exact statement is: “Everything you capture on your glasses stays on your glasses until you choose to move them onto your phone using the Meta AI app. Once there, they’re stored in your photo roll just like any other photo you’ve taken on your phone.” The statement appears in Meta’s Responsible Innovation in AI Glasses & Quest guidance.
That describes the initial storage and transfer choice; it should not be expanded into a claim about every later backup, cloud-sync, or processing path in your phone’s photo system.
What the capture LED communicates
Meta says capture activity for gallery photos, videos, or streaming activates notification and capture LEDs. Ray-Ban’s FAQ describes the front-facing capture LED as a signal to people nearby when a photo or video is being taken: a white blink for a photo and steady white while recording video.
The indicator is a transparency aid, not permission to record anywhere. Ask before recording people when appropriate and respect locations where photography or recording is prohibited or where people reasonably expect privacy. Do not confuse this front-facing light with the inward-facing notification LED brightness setting.
Capture storage is not automatic phone storage
Until you choose a transfer in the Meta AI app, the captured files remain on the glasses. After transfer, Meta says they are stored in the phone’s photo roll like other phone photos. This means changing a notification or voice setting does not itself move, delete, or organize captured media.
“How can I control my privacy on AI glasses?”
Meta says the Meta AI app provides controls for capture, voice, and notification preferences and for managing information shared with Meta. Use the current privacy and data controls presented in your app, because the available labels and navigation can change. The official overview does not establish one universal, current tap-by-tap route for every account and region, so this guide does not invent a deletion menu path.

Meta says users can delete voice recordings and that, after deletion, the recording will not be used for future training. Look for the current voice-recording or privacy/data-management control in the Meta AI app and follow the confirmation prompts shown for your account. If the control is absent, check that the app is updated and consult the current in-app help or Meta privacy guidance rather than relying on a menu path from an older release.

Use the controls as a set
Privacy is not a single master switch. Review capture preferences, voice settings, notification behavior, and information-sharing choices individually. Turning off Voice Control does not erase existing recordings, and changing notification preferences does not change where captured media is stored. Handle each category in its own control area.
Privacy choices do not require a purchase
These settings are software controls for existing Ray-Ban Meta owners. You do not need to buy a newer frame or generation to try the documented paths. Feature availability can still vary by model, app version, language, and region, so a missing feature is a compatibility or rollout question—not automatically a hardware failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot voice commands that do not respond
Ray-Ban’s US FAQ recommends checking the following conditions:
Recommended Free Tools
- The glasses are being worn, powered on, and sufficiently charged.
- Voice Control and the relevant wake-phrase preference are enabled in Meta AI app → Settings → Voice.
- Background noise is not masking the command.
- The phone is within Bluetooth range.
- The glasses and app are using a current supported software state; labels and troubleshooting options can change as the app is updated.
The FAQ also describes a microphone-adjustment troubleshooting option in a current app and software context. Because the page does not establish a permanent version-independent label, open the current Ray-Ban support instructions for the exact option shown in your release rather than forcing an old path.
Separate a voice problem from a notification problem
If the wake word produces the expected white pulse but a message is not read aloud, voice activation is working and the issue is more likely under Communication, the selected phone or service, or phone permissions. If music responds to touch gestures but voice does not, check Voice settings, language availability, noise, charge, and Bluetooth range instead of changing media volume.
When controls or labels are missing
First confirm that the glasses are connected and that the Meta AI app is current. Then check the selected language, account, and service permissions. A menu may be named differently or unavailable in a particular region. Use the live Ray-Ban FAQ for the current microphone or voice troubleshooting option instead of applying a fixed version number from an older guide.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using media gestures to silence alerts: temple swipes affect streamed media, not System Sounds.
- Expecting System Alerts to mute every spoken message: message announcements are under Communication and the selected service.
- Changing the inward-facing LED and expecting the camera light to change: the two LEDs serve different audiences and purposes.
- Assuming one message switch covers every service: Your phone, Messenger, and WhatsApp have separate selections.
- Assuming Voice Control and the wake phrase are one setting: the FAQ lists wake-phrase preferences separately.
- Assuming the capture LED is consent: the light signals activity but does not replace asking people or following venue rules.
- Assuming turning off voice prevents all data handling: review voice-recording and information-sharing controls separately.
- Assuming transferred media is still only on the glasses: Meta says transferred files are placed in the phone’s photo roll.
A practical settings checklist
- For music: use right-temple tap, double-tap, triple-tap, and swipe gestures.
- For low-battery or capture sounds: use Settings → System Alerts → System Sounds; remember they cannot be turned off.
- For phone lock-screen notices: review Settings → System Alerts and the phone’s own app-notification permission.
- For spoken messages: use Settings → Communication, then choose the relevant phone or service.
- For the inward-facing notification light: choose Automatic, Low, Medium, or High; Automatic uses ambient light.
- For voice: use Settings → Voice, then check Voice Control and wake-phrase preferences separately.
- For privacy: review capture, voice, notification, and information-sharing controls in the Meta AI app.
- For recordings: use the current privacy/data controls to delete voice recordings when available; Meta says deleted recordings will not be used for future training.
- For camera transparency: look for the front-facing white blink or steady white recording light and obtain consent where appropriate.

The Bottom Line
Use the right-temple touchpad for streamed media, System Alerts for alert volume and lock-screen notices, Communication for spoken messages, and Voice for Voice Control and wake-phrase options. Treat the inward-facing notification LED and front-facing capture LED as separate indicators. For privacy, review capture, voice, notification, and information-sharing controls individually, and use the current app controls to delete voice recordings when available. Menu names and availability can change, so confirm the current Ray-Ban and Meta guidance for your app, language, region, and glasses generation.
