To turn off PS5 adaptive triggers, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General), choose Trigger Effect Intensity, and select Off. You can also choose a lower intensity instead. This changes the controller’s trigger effect for supported games; it does not add adaptive-trigger support to games that do not implement it.
What the PS5 trigger setting controls
PlayStation calls the feature the DualSense wireless controller’s trigger effect. In games that support it, the L2 and R2 triggers can offer changing resistance or tension. A bow may feel harder to pull as it is drawn, a weapon trigger may become stiff, or a vehicle control may push back against your finger.

The console-wide control is named Trigger Effect Intensity. It changes the strength of that effect, independently of ordinary controller vibration. Turning vibration down does not turn off trigger resistance, and turning trigger effects off does not necessarily disable vibration.

It is also useful when you want the same preference across multiple supported games without searching each title’s options first.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
How to turn adaptive triggers off
- From the PS5 home screen, select Settings in the upper-right corner.
- Open Accessories.
- Select Controller (General).
- Find Trigger Effect Intensity.
- Set it to Off.
The change applies to the controller settings used by supported games. You can return to the same menu and select a lower level whenever you want some resistance without the full effect. Sony’s support guidance confirms the intensity control, but does not promise a fixed list of intermediate labels for every system-software version. Use the choices displayed on your own PS5 rather than relying on a quoted list from an older guide.
How to reduce trigger resistance instead of disabling it
If you still want tactile feedback but find the default force excessive, leave the feature enabled and choose a lower intensity in Trigger Effect Intensity. This is a system preference, so it is the quickest way to make the effect less pronounced before you launch a game.
Lower intensity is different from disabling the feature:

| Goal | Setting | What you should expect |
|---|---|---|
| No adaptive-trigger resistance | Trigger Effect Intensity: Off | Supported games should stop applying the controller’s trigger effect. |
| Less resistance, while keeping feedback | Choose a lower intensity shown by the PS5 | The trigger effect remains available, but feels lighter than the default level. |
| Change vibration only | Adjust the separate vibration setting | Vibration strength changes; trigger resistance is controlled separately. |
Because the available labels can vary with PS5 system software, verify the result by reading the current on-screen option rather than assuming that every console presents identical level names.
Why a game may still feel different after you change the setting
Unsupported games cannot gain adaptive triggers
Adaptive-trigger effects are available only in games that support them. The system setting controls the feature when a title requests it; it cannot add trigger effects to a game that was released without support. If a game never produced resistance before, changing the intensity will not make it do so.
A game can provide its own control
Some titles include a controller or accessibility menu with a game-specific trigger option. If one game behaves differently from the rest, inspect that title’s settings as well as the PS5 system menu. A game-level choice can change the experience for that title without changing the console-wide preference.

- Feel you in-game actions and environement simulated through haptic feedback
- Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone
- Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
Vibration and trigger effects are separate
A controller can still vibrate after trigger effects are switched off, because vibration has its own intensity control. Conversely, reducing vibration does not remove resistance from L2 or R2. Adjust both settings if you want a completely quieter or less tactile controller.
Testing the change safely
- After selecting the new intensity, start a game known to use adaptive triggers.
- Use a situation that normally applies resistance, such as aiming, firing, drawing a bow, or accelerating.
- Press L2 and R2 normally; do not force a trigger that feels unexpectedly stiff.
- If the effect remains, pause the game and check its controller or accessibility settings.
- Return to Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) and confirm the displayed intensity if the behavior is unchanged.
Testing in a supported title matters. In an unsupported game, there may be no trigger effect to observe, so that game cannot confirm whether the setting worked.
DualSense, PS VR2 Sense, and DualSense Edge details
Standard DualSense controller
The general controller menu is the normal way to adjust trigger-effect intensity for a DualSense wireless controller. No purchase, accessory, or replacement controller is required to disable the feature.

PS VR2 Sense controllers
Sony’s general controller-settings guidance also applies the trigger-effect setting to PS VR2 Sense. If you are using those controllers, look for the same intensity control in the PS5 accessory settings.
DualSense Edge profiles
DualSense Edge owners can configure trigger-effect intensity per controller profile. That lets one profile retain stronger effects while another uses a lighter level or turns them off. If the behavior changes when you switch profiles, check the active profile’s trigger settings rather than assuming the console-wide preference was lost.
Troubleshooting when adaptive triggers will not turn off
The menu path looks different
PS5 labels and menu placement can change with system software updates. Start at Settings, open Accessories, and look for the controller’s general settings. The exact wording should include Trigger Effect Intensity. If a recent update moved the option, use the Settings search function or browse the controller-related entries instead of following an older screenshot.
Best Value
- Bring gaming worlds to life, Feel your in-game actions and environment simulated through haptic feedback (Available when feature is supported by game)
- Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers (Available when feature is supported by game)
- Find your voice, share your passion, chat online with the built in microphone (Available when feature is supported by game)
- Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
- Multi-device connectivity, connect using a USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth technology and easily play on more devices
The game still has resistance
- Confirm that Trigger Effect Intensity is set to Off, not merely reduced.
- Check the game’s own controller, gameplay, or accessibility menu for a separate trigger option.
- Make sure you are changing the settings for the controller you are actually using.
- Test another supported game to distinguish a title-specific setting from a console setting.
- Reconnect the controller and test again if the menu shows the expected value but the hardware response does not change.
Only one game behaves differently
A title may save its own preference, apply trigger effects only in certain modes, or not support the feature at all. Compare its in-game options with the PS5 setting. Do not infer that the system control is broken solely because one title does not respond.
The effect returns after changing profiles
On a DualSense Edge, profiles can carry their own trigger-effect intensity. Select the profile you intend to use, set its trigger value, and test while that profile is active.
Health and comfort considerations
Sony’s DualSense instruction manual advises against using vibration or trigger effects when you have an ailment or injury affecting the bones, joints, or muscles of your hands or arms. If resistance causes pain, numbness, fatigue, or aggravates an existing condition, stop playing and disable the trigger effect. Seek medical advice for persistent symptoms; a console setting is not a treatment.
For ordinary discomfort, start with Off or a lower intensity, take regular breaks, and avoid gripping the controller more tightly to overcome resistance. The same consideration applies to PS VR2 Sense trigger effects.
When to use a different controller
Changing the built-in intensity setting is sufficient for most players. A replacement or second DualSense wireless controller is optional, not a prerequisite. Consider another controller only if the current unit has a physical fault, a trigger does not return normally, or you need a separate controller for another player.
DualSense Edge is relevant when you already need configurable profiles and want trigger intensity to vary by profile. It is not necessary simply to disable adaptive triggers, because the standard controller settings provide that control.
