How to Adjust Noise-Cancelling and Ambient Sound Settings on Sony Headphones

Use Sony | Sound Connect to choose Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off, adjust how much outside sound is mixed in, and decide whether the headphones change modes automatically. For supported over-ear models, the reliable manual workflow is: turn off Adaptive Sound Control, then press the left-side Noise Canceling/Ambient Sound Mode button. In the app, Ambient Sound Control provides a level slider from 1 to 20, where higher numbers mean more ambient pickup.

Sony changes menu names, button assignments, and available features by model and by phone operating system. The steps below follow Sony’s over-ear support instructions and identify where earbuds or other models differ. If a control is missing, use the support page or manual for the exact model rather than assuming the feature has been removed.

What each listening mode does

The three labels describe different signal-processing choices. They are not interchangeable volume controls, and the Ambient Sound number is not a rating of cancellation strength.

Mode Choose it when What to expect
Noise Canceling You want less background noise while listening. Sony describes this mode as useful for reducing background noise. The result and the controls available depend on the model.
Ambient Sound You need to hear more of the surrounding environment while audio continues. On supported models, Sound Connect lets you set the pickup level. A higher level brings in more outside sound.
Off You want neither noise-cancelling nor ambient-sound processing. Some models include Off in the app or switching cycle; others expose a different sequence. Check the model manual.

Noise Canceling is the setting for a quieter background, while Ambient Sound is the setting for awareness of people, announcements, or other nearby sound. If you are trying to make music seem louder, change playback volume separately; moving the Ambient Sound slider changes how much environmental audio is picked up, not the music volume.

Before changing a setting

  • Identify the exact headphone model. Sony’s instructions are model-specific, and an over-ear button layout is not a safe guide for earbuds.
  • Install or open Sony | Sound Connect on the phone that is paired with the headphones.
  • Keep Bluetooth enabled and connect the headphones before opening device controls.
  • If the app uses a different label from the one in this guide, follow the equivalent control in the model’s Sony manual.

These steps do not require buying a different headset. They are settings changes for headphones you already own.

Connect the headphones and find the controls

  1. Pair the headphones with your phone using the phone’s Bluetooth settings if they are not already connected.
  2. Open Sony | Sound Connect.
  3. Open My Device and select the connected headphones.
  4. Look for Adaptive Sound Control and Ambient Sound Control. Their presence and exact placement vary by model and operating system.

If My Device does not show the headphones, first confirm that the phone is connected to the intended headset rather than another Bluetooth device. If the app still lacks the setting, consult the exact model’s support page; Sony states that menu names and procedures can differ.

Switch an over-ear headset manually

Manual switching is the best option when you want the mode to stay where you put it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Sound Connect, open My Device, choose Adaptive Sound Control, and turn it off.
  2. On the over-ear layout covered by Sony’s guide, find the narrow Noise Canceling/Ambient Sound Mode button on the left earcup next to the power button.
  3. Press the button once. Each press alternates between Noise Canceling and Ambient Sound Mode.
  4. Listen briefly and confirm the mode in Sound Connect if you are unsure which state is active.

The physical control may have another name, be in another position, or cycle through an additional state on a different model. Do not force the sequence described above onto a headset whose manual assigns the button differently.

Adjust how much outside sound you hear

On supported models, the app controls the amount of environmental audio rather than offering only an on/off choice.

  1. Open Sound Connect and select the headphones under My Device.
  2. Open Ambient Sound Control.
  3. Select Ambient Sound.
  4. Move the ambient-level slider to the desired value. Sony’s over-ear guide documents a range from 1 to 20.
  5. Test the result in the place where you will use the headphones, then move the slider again if necessary.

The direction is straightforward: a higher number means more ambient sound pickup. Sony’s wording is, “The higher the number, the higher the ambient sound pickup level.” This range describes the app control; it is not a laboratory score for noise cancellation and cannot be used to compare one Sony model with another.

When to use a lower level

A lower Ambient Sound setting lets you retain more separation from the environment while still using the ambient mode. It is useful when you want some awareness but do not want the surroundings to dominate your listening. The appropriate value depends on the model, fit, program material, and environment, so the slider should be treated as a listening adjustment rather than a universal recommendation.

When to use a higher level

A higher value increases the amount of outside sound mixed into the headphones. Raise it when the surrounding sound is difficult to hear at a lower setting. Because the scale is model-specific, do not assume that level 10 on one headset produces the same result as level 10 on another.

Let the headphones change modes automatically

Adaptive Sound Control is the feature to use when the headphones should react to what you are doing or where you are. It can assign Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off to detected actions. Sony’s guide also describes automatic switching at registered places, which uses the phone’s location settings.

  1. Open Sound Connect and go to My Device.
  2. Open Adaptive Sound Control and turn it on.
  3. Open the action settings.
  4. Review each detected action and assign Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off as appropriate.
  5. If you use location-based changes, allow the phone’s location service required by the app and review the registered places.

Adaptive Sound Control and manual switching serve different goals. Automatic control is convenient when your listening pattern changes repeatedly. It is counterproductive when you need one fixed mode, because the action or location rules can override the state you selected with the button.

Automatic ambient adjustment

Sound Connect can also provide Auto Ambient Sound on supported models. This option adjusts the ambient level in response to surrounding noise, and Sony’s guide says its sensitivity can be adjusted. If your model exposes this control, open Ambient Sound Control, choose Ambient Sound, and look for the Auto Ambient Sound option and its sensitivity setting. If neither option appears, the feature may not be available on that model or operating-system combination.

Turn off the Adaptive Sound Control notification tone

If the mode changes are expected but the confirmation sound is distracting, Sony allows the Adaptive Sound Control notification tone to be turned off. Open the Adaptive Sound Control settings in Sound Connect and disable that notification option when it is shown. This silences the notification; it does not disable the automatic mode changes themselves.

Stop the mode from changing by itself

If Noise Canceling changes to Ambient Sound, or the reverse, check automatic controls before assuming the headphones are defective.

  1. Open Sound Connect and inspect Adaptive Sound Control.
  2. If you want stable manual control, turn Adaptive Sound Control off.
  3. Check the action assignments for activity-based changes and remove or revise any assignment that selects the unwanted mode.
  4. Check registered places and the phone’s location permission if changes happen only at particular locations.
  5. Press the left-unit Noise Canceling/Ambient Sound Mode button on the supported over-ear layout to select the desired mode again.

Automatic switching can be triggered by activity or location. Turning off Adaptive Sound Control is the direct fix when you do not want either type of automation. You can leave the notification tone disabled or enabled independently.

If earbuds switch modes unexpectedly

Earbuds can change modes when a touch sensor receives an accidental tap. This is separate from the over-ear button procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Sound Connect and select the earbuds under My Device.
  2. Open the device-control or touch-control settings.
  3. Find the touch action associated with changing sound mode.
  4. Set that action to Not Assigned if you do not want touch input to change Noise Canceling or Ambient Sound.

After making the change, use the app or the earbuds’ remaining assigned control to select modes. The exact touch-control menu can differ by model, so use the model manual if the label is not identical.

Restore stronger noise cancelling after an update

Owners sometimes report that the noise-cancelling effect feels weaker after headphone software is updated. Sony’s WH-1000XM6 guidance specifically recommends checking the settings because Adaptive Sound Control may have activated after an update.

  1. Open Sound Connect and select the WH-1000XM6 or the affected model.
  2. Check whether Adaptive Sound Control is on. Turn it off if you want a fixed mode.
  3. Confirm that the selected mode is Noise Canceling, not Ambient Sound.
  4. Use the physical Noise Canceling/Ambient Sound Mode control or the app to select Noise Canceling manually.
  5. Listen again in the same environment. If the setting changes back, repeat the Adaptive Sound Control and location checks.

The documented remedy is a settings check, not a claim that every post-update change has the same cause. WH-1000XM6 instructions are a model example; other Sony headphones may show different controls.

If earbud noise cancelling is still weak

For earbuds, fit is a major part of the noise-cancelling result. Sony says that a poor seal can significantly affect noise cancellation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Make sure each earbud is seated securely.
  • Try an ear-tip size that seals the ear canal without becoming painful.
  • Recheck the Noise Canceling selection in Sound Connect after changing the tip or fit.
  • Do not apply these ear-tip instructions to over-ear headphones; their earcup seal and physical fit work differently.

If the mode is correctly set to Noise Canceling but the earbuds still let in substantially more sound, check fit before treating the app level or a software update as the cause. The fit guidance is earbud-specific and should not be generalized to every Sony product.

Use the right control for the problem

What you want to change Control to open Action
Keep one fixed mode Adaptive Sound Control Turn it off, then select Noise Canceling or Ambient Sound with the app or supported physical button.
Increase or decrease outside sound in Ambient Sound mode Ambient Sound Control Choose Ambient Sound and move the 1–20 level slider.
Allow activity-based changes Adaptive Sound Control action settings Turn it on and assign Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off to the detected actions.
Allow place-based changes Adaptive Sound Control and phone location settings Review registered places and the location permission used by the app.
Prevent an earbud touch from changing modes Device controls or touch settings Set the relevant touch action to Not Assigned.
Silence automatic-control alerts Adaptive Sound Control settings Turn off the notification tone, if the model provides that option.

Why a control may be missing

Sony does not provide one universal interface for every headphone. A setting can be absent because the model does not support it, because the control has another name, because the physical button assignment differs, or because the phone operating system presents the app differently.

Use the exact model’s Sony support page or manual when:

  • There is no Adaptive Sound Control entry.
  • The left earcup has no button labeled or positioned like the over-ear guide’s Noise Canceling/Ambient Sound Mode button.
  • The switching cycle includes an unexpected state or does not alternate between the two modes.
  • The Ambient Sound slider is missing or uses a scale other than 1–20.
  • Touch controls, Auto Ambient Sound, sensitivity, or location actions are not shown.

Do not infer that a missing menu means the headphones are stuck. Sony’s own instructions qualify the procedure by model and operating system, so the manual for the exact product is the authoritative path when labels differ.

A practical setup for common situations

You want the quietest consistent listening mode

  1. Turn off Adaptive Sound Control.
  2. Select Noise Canceling.
  3. Leave the headphones in that mode and avoid assigning a touch action that changes modes.

This setup removes activity- and location-based changes. It does not promise identical cancellation performance in every environment; it simply keeps the selected processing mode fixed.

You need awareness without fully abandoning ambient processing

  1. Turn off Adaptive Sound Control if you do not want automatic changes.
  2. Select Ambient Sound.
  3. Start at a lower slider value, then increase it toward the documented 1–20 range until the outside sound is adequate.

The higher number increases pickup. It should not be interpreted as a measure of safety, cancellation, or sound quality.

You move between quiet and noisy places repeatedly

  1. Turn on Adaptive Sound Control.
  2. Assign Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off to the actions Sony exposes for your model.
  3. Register places only if location-based behavior is useful to you.
  4. Keep the phone’s required location setting available for place-based switching.

If the automatic result becomes inconvenient, turn Adaptive Sound Control off and return to the manual procedure rather than repeatedly fighting the automatic assignments.

What to check before contacting support

  • The headphones are connected to the phone running Sound Connect.
  • You are changing settings under the correct device in My Device.
  • Adaptive Sound Control is off when you expect manual control.
  • The selected mode is Noise Canceling when you are troubleshooting weak cancellation.
  • The Ambient Sound slider is being adjusted under Ambient Sound Control, not confused with playback volume.
  • Location rules and permissions have been reviewed if changes occur at particular places.
  • Earbud tips fit securely when the product is an earbud model.
  • You have checked the exact model manual when a button or menu does not match these instructions.

These checks separate configuration problems from model-specific behavior. They also preserve the distinction between over-ear controls, earbud touch controls, and fit-related earbud performance.
