Netflix does not offer a brightness slider in its computer web player. To brighten a show or movie, raise your computer’s screen brightness or adjust the monitor itself; if the picture still looks unusually dark, check the device’s HDR settings.
How to brighten Netflix on a computer
For browser playback, use your computer’s brightness controls rather than looking for a setting in the Netflix player. Netflix Help Center says its brightness setting is not available on web browsers or TV displays (How to adjust brightness).
- Try the keyboard or quick settings. Many laptops have brightness keys, often marked with a sun icon. Some computers also provide a brightness control in their quick settings panel. The keys and exact route vary by model.
- Open the operating system’s display settings. Look for the screen brightness control in your computer’s display settings. Available controls depend on the computer and connected display.
- Check the monitor. For an external monitor, use its physical buttons or on-screen menu to adjust brightness. A desktop computer may not expose a brightness slider in its operating system.
If you cannot find a control, consult the computer or monitor maker’s instructions for your model. Netflix likewise directs browser viewers to adjust brightness through their device settings.
If a show or movie still looks too dark
Netflix advises that a dim picture may call for a change to the device’s brightness level or HDR settings (TV shows or movies are too dark). These are different controls: brightness changes how bright the display is, while HDR affects how compatible devices handle high-dynamic-range video. HDR is not a universal brightness fix, and the available controls depend on the computer, display, and playback setup.

- First confirm the screen brightness is where you want it and that the display itself is not set unusually dim.
- If the problem seems tied to HDR playback, check whether HDR is enabled and supported throughout your setup. Avoid changing HDR settings blindly; the result depends on the device and display.
- If other video or the computer’s interface also looks dim, investigate the display or system settings rather than assuming Netflix is the cause.
HDR playback checks for Windows and Mac
HDR compatibility requirements matter only when troubleshooting HDR playback. They are not prerequisites for changing ordinary screen brightness, and meeting them does not itself raise brightness.
Windows
Netflix’s Windows guidance lists Windows 11 with current updates, a supported browser or the Netflix app, compatible graphics hardware, and an HDR-capable screen or external display with HDR enabled. Some Windows 11 devices may also need the HEVC video extension. Check Netflix’s Windows computer or tablet requirements for current details applicable to your setup.

Mac
For HDR, Netflix’s Mac guidance calls for the latest Safari, a compatible Mac with an HDR-capable display, macOS Catalina 10.15.4 or later, HDR enabled in Display settings, and an HDR-capable cable or adapter if one is used. It also says to turn off “Optimize video streaming while on battery.” Requirements can change, so consult Netflix’s Mac computer requirements for the latest guidance.

If the image looks poor in ways beyond brightness, check the whole playback chain: computer, display, connection port, cable or adapter, and HDR support. Netflix says a device or connection that does not meet the desired playback standard can limit available video quality (How to get the best video quality). That guidance concerns playback quality; it does not establish that a cable is causing a dark picture, so replacing a cable is not a general brightness fix.
