Do not lower sensitivity by the same percentage as the weight you removed. There is no validated weight-to-DPI or weight-to-sensitivity conversion. Start by matching the new mouse to your old DPI and in-game sensitivity, verify that the correct profile and DPI stage are active, and then make one small change at a time only if you consistently overshoot or undershoot.
A lighter mouse can feel quicker because it requires less force to start, stop, and change direction. That changes the physical feel, not the distance represented by a DPI setting. Treat the transition as a calibration problem: keep the digital controls known, practice under comparable conditions, and adjust only the control that explains the problem.

What changes when you move to a lighter mouse?
Mouse weight affects the effort and momentum of your hand. A lighter shell may start moving with less force and may be easier to reverse. You may therefore reach a target sooner, stop later, or make a wider flick than you intended even though the mouse reports the same counts as the old one.

The manufacturer guidance reviewed for this topic discusses fit, weight, DPI, and controls, but it does not publish a formula that turns a weight difference into a DPI or game-sensitivity change. A 20 percent lighter mouse is not evidence that sensitivity should be reduced by 20 percent.

Do not assume that a lighter mouse improves aim for every player. Hand size, grip, pad friction, posture, sensor behavior, and familiarity all influence the result. The useful question is whether your repeated errors are overshoots or undershoots after you have confirmed the settings, not whether the mouse is lighter in isolation.
Keep the controls separate
Several settings can make a pointer or reticle feel faster. They are related in the final movement you see, but they do different jobs and are adjusted in different places.
| Control | What it changes | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse DPI | How far the cursor or aim moves for a given physical movement, as implemented by the mouse | Mouse software, onboard DPI buttons, or an in-game setup screen |
| In-game sensitivity | View or aim movement inside one particular game | The game’s input or sensitivity menu |
| Operating-system pointer speed | Desktop pointer movement | Windows or macOS pointer settings |
| Pointer acceleration | Whether movement changes with movement characteristics, which can make the same hand motion feel different across applications | Windows Enhance pointer precision or a vendor-specific setting |
| Polling or report rate | How often the mouse reports its position | Mouse software; it is separate from sensitivity |
DPI affects movement distance. Polling rate concerns reporting frequency, not movement distance. Logitech’s technical guidance uses 1,000 Hz as an example that reports position 1,000 times per second; the G302 documentation lists model-specific report-rate options from 125 to 1,000 reports per second. Those figures describe reporting behavior, not an ideal sensitivity for every user.
Step 1: Record the old setup before changing anything
Write down the settings that made the old mouse usable. A screenshot or short note prevents you from trying to recover a value from memory after several experiments.
- Mouse DPI, including the active DPI stage rather than only the range advertised by the software.
- The sensitivity value for each game or application you use.
- Any game-specific profile, scoped or zoom sensitivity, and alternate control profile that you rely on.
- Windows pointer speed and whether Enhance pointer precision is enabled, if desktop behavior matters.
- macOS tracking speed, if you use a Mac.
- The old polling rate, if you know it. Do not change it as part of the first sensitivity test.
If the old mouse had a DPI button, note which stage was active during play. A button press can change the stage without any visible change in the game’s settings menu.
Step 2: Match the previous baseline on the lighter mouse
Set the new mouse to the same DPI as the old one whenever the hardware supports that value, then restore the same in-game sensitivity. This gives you a known starting point and lets you judge the physical change without mixing it with a numerical change.
Use the mouse’s own software or onboard controls to select DPI. Features vary by model. For example, the Logitech G302 support documentation describes multiple DPI stages, a default stage, optional shift DPI, report-rate controls, and profile settings for that specific mouse and software combination. Do not assume another model offers the same stages, ranges, or profile behavior.

- Select the profile used for the game or desktop task.
- Choose the DPI value that matches your old mouse.
- Disable or avoid temporary shift-DPI behavior while calibrating unless you intentionally use it.
- Launch the game and enter the same sensitivity value you recorded.
If the new mouse cannot reproduce the old DPI exactly, choose the closest available value and treat that as a new baseline. Change the game sensitivity only after you have verified which DPI value is actually active.
Step 3: Check for an accidental profile or DPI-stage change
A surprising speed increase is often a configuration change rather than a consequence of weight. Before reducing sensitivity, check the active profile and the physical buttons that cycle DPI.
- Confirm that the game profile is active rather than a desktop or default profile.
- Check the highlighted or displayed DPI stage in the mouse utility.
- Make sure a DPI-cycle button was not pressed while moving the mouse.
- Check whether a profile change, wake event, or software restart returned the mouse to a default DPI stage.
- Verify that the game did not load a different input profile or reset its sensitivity.
Some mouse software can return to a default stage after a profile change or wake event. That behavior is model-dependent, so use the indicators and documentation for your own mouse instead of assuming that every device behaves the same way.
Step 4: Hold system settings steady
Windows desktop pointer
If the complaint is that icons, windows, or the desktop pointer move too far, adjust the operating-system setting rather than the game first. Logitech documents this path as Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings, where the pointer-speed control is available. Microsoft also documents a Cursor speed slider and the Enhance pointer precision option under additional mouse options. Labels can vary by Windows version.

Acceleration
Pointer acceleration changes the relationship between movement characteristics and pointer behavior. It can make the same physical distance feel different when you move slowly versus quickly, and it can make desktop behavior differ from a game. Record whether it is enabled before the transition. If you want a consistent test, keep the acceleration setting unchanged while comparing the two mice; investigate it separately if behavior is inconsistent across applications.
Step 5: Test under comparable conditions
Use the same game, surface, grip, seating position, and practice task you used with the old mouse. A different pad, a changed grip, or a different field of view can make a legitimate baseline feel unfamiliar.
Judge patterns, not a single dramatic flick. During several practice sessions, ask whether you repeatedly move past the target or repeatedly stop short. A single miss can be timing or attention. A consistent direction of error is a reason to adjust one control.
The available guidance does not prescribe a validated number of sessions, a score, or a minimum accuracy threshold. Use enough comparable practice to notice a repeated pattern, and record the setting for each attempt so your conclusion is not based on memory.
Step 6: Make one small change at a time
When overshoot remains after the baseline and profile checks, make a modest reduction to one relevant sensitivity control. When undershoot remains, make a modest increase. Retest before touching another control.
- Choose whether the problem is in-game aim or general desktop movement.
- For in-game aim, change either the game sensitivity or the mouse DPI, not both.
- For desktop movement, change OS pointer speed or the relevant tracking setting.
- Keep polling rate and acceleration fixed during this comparison.
- Repeat the same practice task and record the result.
There is no evidence-based reason to calculate the adjustment from the mouse-weight percentage. Small, reversible steps preserve your ability to identify the cause. If a change makes control worse, return to the previous recorded value rather than stacking another change on top.
Should you lower sensitivity after switching to a lighter mouse?
Only if your testing shows a repeatable overshoot at the matched baseline. Some players will prefer a modest reduction because the lighter shell starts and stops with less effort; others will keep the old numbers after adapting their grip and stopping technique. Neither response is guaranteed by the weight alone.

Start at the old DPI and game sensitivity, then let repeated behavior determine the direction of the adjustment. Do not lower sensitivity automatically, and do not lower it by a fixed percentage tied to grams or ounces.
When a reduction makes sense
- You consistently pass the target despite using the same DPI and game sensitivity.
- You have confirmed the active profile and DPI stage.
- Your pad, grip, and practice task are comparable to the old setup.
- The error remains after you have had enough comparable practice to identify a pattern.
When not to reduce it yet
- The active DPI stage is uncertain.
- A DPI-cycle or profile button may have been pressed.
- The problem appears only on the desktop, not in the game.
- You changed polling rate, acceleration, pointer speed, and game sensitivity together.
- You are reacting to one or two misses rather than a repeated trend.
Polling rate: leave it out of the first adjustment
Polling rate is a reporting-frequency setting, not a sensitivity conversion. A higher rate can affect perceived responsiveness, battery use on wireless hardware, or system performance, but it does not make a given physical movement represent a different number of cursor pixels in the way DPI does.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the old polling rate while you establish sensitivity. If you later change it for a separate reason, confirm that the mouse supports the selected rate and observe battery and system behavior independently. The G302 documentation’s 125-to-1,000 reports-per-second range is a specification for that model and software combination, not a recommendation for all mice.

Everything feels dramatically faster
- Check the active DPI stage on the mouse.
- Check whether a shift-DPI or DPI-cycle button is being held or pressed.
- Confirm the game profile and its sensitivity value.
- Verify that the old mouse and new mouse are being compared at the same DPI units.
- Only then test a small sensitivity reduction.
The game feels fine, but the desktop is too fast
Leave the game values alone and adjust Windows pointer speed or macOS tracking speed. Also check pointer acceleration. Desktop settings and in-game settings are separate, so changing game sensitivity will not correct an overly fast file-management or browsing pointer.
The desktop feels normal, but aim is inconsistent between games
Check each game’s own sensitivity and profile. A mouse DPI value can be shared while game-specific sensitivity values differ. Confirm that a game has not loaded a different profile or reset its input options.
The mouse feels different after sleep or software restart
Inspect the active profile and DPI stage after wake. Some utilities return to a default stage after profile changes or wake events, and the exact behavior depends on the model. Record the stage before and after the event to determine whether the change is configuration-related.
You cannot decide whether to change DPI or game sensitivity
For a single game, changing that game’s sensitivity keeps the mouse’s desktop and other-game behavior unchanged. Changing DPI affects every application that uses the mouse value. Pick the control whose scope matches the problem, change only that control, and record the result.

A practical calibration worksheet
Use a short worksheet to prevent circular adjustments:
- Old DPI: record the exact value and active stage.
- Old game sensitivity: record the value for each game tested.
- System setting: record Windows pointer speed or macOS tracking speed, plus the acceleration state.
- New baseline: enter the same values on the lighter mouse where possible.
- Verification: note the active profile, DPI stage, and polling rate.
- Observed error: mark repeated overshoot, repeated undershoot, or no consistent error.
- Single change: record the one setting changed and its new value.
- Retest: use the same task and record whether the pattern improved.
This process does not require a special test score. Its purpose is to preserve a known baseline and make each adjustment attributable.
Choosing a lighter mouse without overpromising performance
A lightweight gaming mouse can be a sensible fit when you prefer less effort during long swipes or rapid direction changes. Logitech G’s buying guidance advises choosing a mouse that fits your hand and does not feel too light or too heavy, and identifies the PRO X Superlight 2 as a lightweight model. That is product guidance, not controlled evidence that every player will aim better after switching.
Recommended Free Tools
Buying another mouse is not required to perform this calibration. If the new mouse fits your hand, tracks reliably, and supports the controls you need, matching the baseline and testing methodically is more useful than chasing a particular weight number.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The available manufacturer material distinguishes DPI from polling rate, documents operating-system pointer controls, and shows that mouse software can provide multiple DPI stages and profiles. It does not provide a named population statistic on how weight changes sensitivity, a universal adjustment percentage, or a validated time-to-adaptation figure.
Accordingly, the most defensible procedure is procedural rather than formulaic: match the old values, verify the active configuration, keep unrelated controls steady, observe repeated behavior, and make one small reversible change at a time.
