How to Adjust Mouse Pointer Speed and Acceleration in Windows 11 and 10

In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse and move Mouse pointer speed. To change what many people call mouse acceleration, open Additional mouse settings > Pointer Options and toggle Enhance pointer precision. Windows 10 uses Settings > Devices > Mouse, where the slider is called Cursor speed.

These are separate controls: the slider changes the pointer-speed setting, while Enhance pointer precision changes pointer behavior that Microsoft describes as improving accuracy when the mouse moves slowly.

What the two controls change

Windows presents pointer speed and pointer precision as different settings. Use the speed slider when the cursor travels too far or not far enough for your normal hand movement. Use Enhance pointer precision when you want to evaluate the slow-movement behavior that many guides call acceleration. Microsoft does not publish a universal slider value or recommend one configuration for every user.

Setting Where to find it What it controls
Mouse pointer speed (Windows 11) Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse The pointer-speed setting adjusted with a slider.
Cursor speed (Windows 10) Settings > Devices > Mouse The Windows 10 pointer-speed slider.
Enhance pointer precision Mouse Properties > Pointer Options A separate precision behavior for slow mouse movement; often searched for as “mouse acceleration.”

Microsoft documents these controls in its Change mouse settings instructions. The label Enhance pointer precision is the one to look for in the current Windows interface.

Before changing anything

First identify which Windows version you are using. The menu names are not interchangeable: Windows 11 says Bluetooth & devices and Mouse pointer speed, while Windows 10 says Devices and Cursor speed. Following the wrong path can make a working setting appear to be missing.

Decide whether your problem is distance, slow-movement feel, or visibility. If a small hand movement sends the pointer too far, begin with the speed slider. If the pointer feels inconsistent during very slow movements, compare Enhance pointer precision. If you lose sight of the pointer, change its appearance or use trails rather than making it move faster.

The documented adjustments are built into Windows. They require no new mouse, mouse pad, subscription, or other purchase. You can make the changes with the mouse already connected and return to the same pages whenever your preference changes.

Change pointer speed in Windows 11

Open the Mouse settings page

  1. Open Start > Settings, or press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices in the left pane.
  3. Choose Mouse.

Move the Mouse pointer speed slider

Under the Mouse page, find Mouse pointer speed. Move the slider, then move the mouse across your usual work area to judge the result. Move it toward a slower setting if a small hand movement sends the pointer farther than you want; move it toward a faster setting if you repeatedly run out of desk space before reaching an on-screen target.

There is no officially preferred number. Select a position that lets you reach common targets without repeated corrections, then use the computer normally for a few minutes before making another small change. Changing one control at a time makes it easier to identify which adjustment helped.

Use a consistent way to judge the slider

Test more than one type of movement. Move between two familiar windows, select a line of text, and click a small control. Notice whether you stop on the target or overshoot it, and whether your hand reaches the edge of the available surface. These observations tell you whether to move the slider up or down without implying that one position is correct for everyone.

Make small, deliberate changes instead of moving the slider repeatedly while trying to work. After each change, perform the same few actions again. If you alter the speed and the precision checkbox at the same time, you lose a clear comparison of what caused the new pointer feel.

Turn mouse acceleration behavior on or off in Windows 11

Open Mouse Properties

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
  2. Under Related settings, select Additional mouse settings.
  3. In the Mouse Properties window, open the Pointer Options tab.

Change Enhance pointer precision

Select or clear Enhance pointer precision, then select OK. Microsoft describes this option as a way “to make the pointer more accurate when the mouse is moving slowly.” That wording describes the purpose of the checkbox; it does not define a universal speed, an acceleration curve, or a setting that suits every task.

Keep the speed slider and this checkbox conceptually separate. If the cursor is simply too fast, adjust Mouse pointer speed. If the travel feels different depending on how slowly you move the mouse, compare the pointer with Enhance pointer precision enabled and disabled.

What selecting OK does

The checkbox is in the classic Mouse Properties window rather than on the main modern Settings page. Select OK after changing it so the choice is applied and the dialog closes. If you close the window without confirming, reopen it and check which state is selected before drawing conclusions about the result.

Change pointer speed and precision in Windows 10

Adjust the speed slider

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Devices > Mouse.
  3. Use the slider labeled Cursor speed.

Windows 10 calls the control Cursor speed, not Mouse pointer speed. The different label is why instructions written for Windows 11 may not match what you see.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the precision option

  1. From Settings > Devices > Mouse, select Additional mouse options.
  2. In Mouse Properties, open Pointer Options.
  3. Select or clear Enhance pointer precision.
  4. Select OK to apply the choice.

The speed and precision steps remain separate in Windows 10 just as they are in Windows 11. Set Cursor speed first, perform a few normal tasks, and then evaluate the checkbox independently if needed.

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC continues to operate, but Microsoft says it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. The mouse settings remain available, but that support status is relevant when deciding whether to keep using the operating system.

How to decide whether Enhance pointer precision helps

Because Microsoft does not specify a best configuration, evaluate the checkbox with your own mouse and normal tasks rather than relying on a fixed recommendation. A simple comparison avoids changing several variables at once.

A practical before-and-after check

  1. Leave the speed slider at a comfortable position.
  2. Use the pointer for a familiar task, such as selecting text, clicking small controls, or moving between windows.
  3. Notice whether you can stop on targets cleanly or whether you make frequent corrective movements.
  4. Open Mouse Properties > Pointer Options, change only Enhance pointer precision, and select OK.
  5. Repeat the same type of task and compare control, comfort, and the amount of desk movement required.

Keep the option that feels more predictable for your work. The result is a personal preference, not a measurement that can be generalized to every mouse, surface, application, or user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to revisit the choice

Recheck the setting if your work changes from ordinary desktop navigation to a task that demands very small pointer movements, or if you change your physical setup. Record which state you prefer before changing it again so you can return to the previous configuration without guessing.

  • Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
  • You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
  • Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
  • The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.

Do not treat a brief first impression as a universal test. Pointer behavior can seem different when you are moving slowly, crossing a larger part of the screen, or repeatedly making corrections. Compare similar actions with the same speed-slider position, and change only the checkbox between trials.

Speed, precision, and visibility: choosing the right fix

Symptom Start here Reason
The pointer crosses too much or too little screen for a normal hand movement. Mouse pointer speed or Cursor speed. This is the dedicated travel-speed control.
Slow movements do not feel predictable. Compare Enhance pointer precision on and off. Microsoft describes the option specifically in terms of slow movement.
You can move the pointer but cannot locate it easily. Pointer size, color/style, or trails. These change visibility rather than ordinary travel speed.
You need keyboard-based pointer control. Mouse Keys. It moves the pointer with the numeric keypad and has separate speed choices.

This separation prevents a common misdiagnosis. Making the pointer faster will not necessarily make it easier to see, and changing a visibility option will not change how far a physical mouse movement travels.

Fix visibility problems without changing speed

A pointer that is difficult to see is not necessarily moving too fast. Windows provides appearance and visibility controls separately from the speed slider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change pointer size, color, or style

In Windows 11, open Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch to change pointer size and style. Microsoft documents related accessibility choices in Make your mouse, keyboard, and other input devices easier to use. These choices change how the pointer looks; they do not alter ordinary mouse travel speed.

Use pointer trails or hide-pointer options

Open Mouse Properties > Pointer Options for options such as pointer trails and Hide pointer while typing. The same area includes Snap To, which can move the pointer toward a default button in some dialog boxes. Microsoft notes that some applications may not support Snap To. These options address locating or positioning the pointer, not the speed slider itself. See Microsoft’s Make Windows easier to see guidance for visibility-related settings.

Because these options are independent, change them only when the symptom matches. For example, trails may help you follow the pointer, while a larger or differently styled pointer may make it easier to spot. Neither change is a substitute for correcting a pointer that is genuinely travelling too far.

Do not confuse Mouse Keys with mouse speed

Mouse Keys is an accessibility feature that moves the pointer with the numeric keypad. It is a keyboard-control method, not a change to the way a physical mouse moves the pointer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mouse Keys has its own speed options, so changing those values will not change the ordinary mouse pointer-speed slider. Microsoft’s instructions are in Use Mouse Keys to move the mouse pointer. Use Mouse Keys when you need keypad control; use the Mouse settings page for a physical mouse.

  • Long-Range: Reliable, long-range Bluetooth wireless mouse works up to 10m/33 feet away from your computer (3)

If the numeric keypad pointer behaves differently from the physical mouse, that is expected: they are separate control methods with separate options. Adjusting Mouse Keys cannot correct a physical-mouse speed preference, and changing the physical-mouse slider cannot configure Mouse Keys.

Troubleshoot a setting that seems missing or ineffective

You cannot find the slider

  • On Windows 11, look under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse for Mouse pointer speed.
  • On Windows 10, use Settings > Devices > Mouse and look for Cursor speed.
  • Do not search only for the word “acceleration.” The checkbox is labeled Enhance pointer precision.

You cannot find Enhance pointer precision

Open the classic Mouse Properties window through Additional mouse settings in Windows 11 or Additional mouse options in Windows 10. Then select Pointer Options. The checkbox is not on the main modern Settings page.

The change does not appear to apply

  1. Confirm that you selected OK in Mouse Properties after changing the checkbox.
  2. Move the pointer through the same type of task before and after the change; a quick desktop glance may not reveal a difference.
  3. Change only one setting at a time. If you move the speed slider and toggle precision together, you cannot tell which change caused the new feel.
  4. Check whether the problem is visibility rather than movement. Pointer size, color, trails, and hiding behavior are separate controls.
  5. Verify that you are changing the setting for the Windows version you are actually using. The Windows 10 and Windows 11 labels differ even though the purpose is similar.

A dialog does not respond to Snap To

Snap To is an optional Pointer Options feature, and Microsoft notes that some applications may not support it. Lack of snapping in one application does not indicate that the speed slider or precision checkbox is broken.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want to undo the experiment

Return to the same menu path and move the speed slider back toward its previous position, or reopen Pointer Options and restore the earlier state of Enhance pointer precision. Keeping a short note of the original choice makes this reversal straightforward. No separate reset utility is required for the documented controls.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Looking for an acceleration slider: Windows exposes the relevant checkbox as Enhance pointer precision.
  • Mixing version-specific paths: Windows 11 uses Bluetooth & devices; Windows 10 uses Devices.
  • Changing several settings together: Separate changes make it impossible to tell which adjustment affected the pointer.
  • Using visibility settings to solve travel distance: Size, color, and trails help you find the pointer but do not set ordinary mouse speed.
  • Using Mouse Keys instructions for a physical mouse: Mouse Keys is a separate numeric-keypad feature.
  • Assuming one value is universally best: Microsoft provides the controls and their purpose, not a preferred number for every person or task.

Quick decision guide

What you notice First setting to try Why
The pointer travels too far or too little for each hand movement. Mouse pointer speed (Windows 11) or Cursor speed (Windows 10). This is the dedicated speed control.
Slow movements feel difficult to control, and you want to compare another behavior. Enhance pointer precision in Mouse Properties > Pointer Options. Microsoft describes it as improving accuracy when the mouse moves slowly.
You lose sight of the pointer. Pointer size, color/style, trails, or related visibility options. Visibility settings change appearance or locating behavior rather than travel speed.
You want to move the pointer with the numeric keypad. Mouse Keys. Mouse Keys is a separate keyboard-based pointer-control feature.

Final setup checklist

  • Identify whether you are using Windows 11 or Windows 10.
  • Use the menu path for your Windows version instead of mixing Windows 10 and Windows 11 labels.
  • Set the speed slider first, then evaluate Enhance pointer precision separately.
  • Use the same everyday actions for a before-and-after comparison.
  • Choose accessibility visibility settings when the pointer is hard to see.
  • Use Mouse Keys only when you need numeric-keypad control.
  • Select OK after changing the precision checkbox.
  • If you remain on Windows 10, account for Microsoft’s end-of-support date of October 14, 2025.

The reliable path is therefore simple: match the slider to the distance your hand can comfortably cover, test Enhance pointer precision as an independent preference, and use visibility or Mouse Keys features only for those separate needs.

Is Enhance pointer precision the same as mouse acceleration?

It is the Windows checkbox many people mean when they search for mouse acceleration. Microsoft describes it as making the pointer more accurate when the mouse moves slowly, but does not publish a universal acceleration curve or setting.

What should I change if the pointer is hard to see?

Use Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch for pointer size and style, or use pointer trails and related visibility options in Mouse Properties > Pointer Options. These do not change ordinary mouse travel speed.

Does Mouse Keys change my physical mouse speed?

No. Mouse Keys moves the pointer with the numeric keypad and has separate speed options. Use the Mouse settings page for a physical mouse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I find Snap To in an application?

Snap To is a Pointer Options feature, and Microsoft notes that some applications may not support it. Lack of snapping in one application does not show that the speed or precision setting is faulty.

Is there a universally best pointer-speed value?

No. Microsoft documents the slider but does not specify an ideal number or one configuration for every user. Choose a position that feels controlled for your own tasks.

Does changing these settings require new hardware or software?

No. The documented pointer-speed, precision, visibility, and Mouse Keys controls are built into Windows and require no purchase.

The Bottom Line

Use Mouse pointer speed in Windows 11 or Cursor speed in Windows 10 to change travel distance. Use Enhance pointer precision in Mouse Properties > Pointer Options to compare slow-movement behavior, and use accessibility or Mouse Keys features only for visibility and keyboard-control needs.
