On a Kindle e-reader, open your book, tap the top of the screen, choose the Aa (Page Display) icon, and use the Font tab for text size. Open Layout for margins, line spacing, paragraph spacing, alignment, and (on supported models) orientation. The exact controls depend on your Kindle model and the book’s format. Amazon documents the e-reader controls in its Kindle text-display help.
If a setting is absent or has no visible effect, first check three things: you may be using a different Kindle app or a Fire tablet, your model may not expose that control, or the book may use a fixed layout such as a print replica, comic, manga, textbook, or some children’s title.

Change text size, margins, and spacing on a Kindle e-reader
These steps apply to Kindle-branded e-readers. They are not identical to the controls in Kindle apps, Kindle for Web, or Fire tablets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOpen the Page Display menu
- Open the book you want to read.
- Tap near the top edge of the page to reveal the reading toolbar.
- Tap Aa, also labeled Page Display on some software versions.
The menu may show separate tabs or grouped controls. Amazon says display settings vary by Kindle model, so a missing tab is not necessarily a fault.
#1 Best Overall
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Adjust font size
- Choose the Font tab.
- Move the font-size slider, or tap the plus and minus controls if your device uses buttons.
- Leave the menu and read a few paragraphs at the new size before making another change.
Some supported e-readers also accept a gesture while a book is open. Amazon’s instructions say, “You can also adjust font size by pinching in or out on the page while reading a book.” See Amazon’s font-size instructions for the device-level details.
Adjust margins and line spacing
- With the Aa menu open, select Layout.
- Use the Margins control to choose a narrower or wider text block.
- Use Line spacing to increase or decrease the vertical gap between lines.
- If available, change Paragraph spacing separately; it affects the gap between paragraphs rather than every line.
- Review other layout controls, such as text alignment or orientation, when your model offers them.
Margins and line spacing change the amount of text that fits on a page. That is expected: a larger type size, wider margins, or more generous spacing can move page breaks and alter the reading location shown by the device.
Use the device-level font setting on newer Kindles
Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and later models, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft also provide a device-level route for font size:

- From the Kindle home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Screen and brightness.
- Choose Display & text size.
- Set the preferred font size.
This setting is separate from the in-book Aa menu. The in-book menu remains the most direct way to tune a particular title, while the device route is useful when you want a baseline size across supported books. Availability still depends on the model and software version. You can also use pinch in or out inside a book when the gesture is supported.
What the Font and Layout tabs control
| Control | Where to find it | What changes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Font size | Aa > Font, or the device-level display-size route on supported newer e-readers | The size of body text and the resulting pagination | Some books and fixed-layout formats do not permit the same adjustment. |
| Margins | Aa > Layout | The width of the text block and the space at the left and right edges | Not every model or app exposes this control. |
| Line spacing | Aa > Layout | Vertical distance between lines | May be grouped with other spacing controls on some software versions. |
| Paragraph spacing | Aa > Layout, when offered | Extra separation between paragraphs | Distinct from line spacing; availability varies. |
| Alignment and orientation | Aa > Layout, when offered | Text alignment or portrait/landscape presentation | Model- and book-dependent. |
Amazon’s e-reader help describes the typesetting behavior this way: “Your Kindle also applies kerning, refines layout for large fonts, and automatically improves line spacing for faster, easier reading across all fonts.” That is an explanation of the Kindle typesetting system, not a promise that every reader will prefer a particular value.
Kindle apps: identify the platform before following steps
Kindle reading apps use an Aa menu, but the controls and labels differ between Android, iOS, macOS, PC, and Kindle for Web. Amazon lists those platform differences in Accessible Reading Options for Kindle Reading Apps. Do not assume that a setting visible on an e-reader must appear in every app.

- Kindle Paperwhite – 7“ Paperwhite display with high contrast ratio and fast page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Android and iPhone or iPad
- Open the Kindle app and open a book.
- Tap near the top center of the page to display the reading controls.
- Tap Aa.
- Open the feature tab that contains font controls, then change text size.
- Open the layout-related tab, when present, to look for margins or spacing.
Amazon identifies font size and spacing controls in these mobile apps, while margin adjustment is available only in supported app versions. If you cannot find margins, update the app and check the title’s format before assuming the feature is broken.
Kindle for Web, Windows PC, and macOS
These platforms have their own listed capabilities rather than a guaranteed copy of the e-reader menu. Open a book, reveal its reading controls, and select the text-display or Aa control if shown. The options may include font size and spacing but not every e-reader setting. Use Amazon’s app accessibility page as the authoritative list for the platform you are using instead of applying a mobile or e-reader shortcut.
Fire tablet
A Fire tablet is an Android-based tablet with a separate system font setting. To change the tablet’s general font size, open Settings > Display > Font Size. Inside a Kindle book, you can also open the Aa menu for book-level reading controls. Amazon documents this distinction in Adjust the Font Size on Your Fire Tablet. A system font change and an in-book setting can affect different parts of the interface, so test the book after changing either one.

Why a setting may be missing or seem not to work
Your Kindle model has a different menu
Kindle generations do not expose exactly the same controls. Amazon explicitly warns that available display settings vary by device model. Compare the labels on your screen with the model-specific instructions rather than looking for a control that may not exist on your device.
You are using an app, not an e-reader
The Android, iOS, macOS, PC, and Web readers have separate capability lists. A margin slider on one platform does not establish that the same slider exists on another. Confirm the operating system and app before troubleshooting the book.

Reflowable books adapt their text to the screen size and the reader’s font and layout choices. Fixed-layout books preserve a designed page. Amazon lists print replica books, manga, comics, and some children’s books or textbooks among formats that may retain their layout. In those titles, font size, margins, and line spacing can be unavailable or have little effect. See Amazon’s accessibility information for Kindle books.

Check the book’s detail page for information about whether its appearance can be modified. If the page is a scanned or designed replica, changing the reader’s typography cannot turn it into reflowable text.
The title’s typography is being handled by Enhanced Typesetting
Amazon says Enhanced Typesetting can adjust composition at large font sizes or short line lengths to reduce uneven word spacing. Its documented features include improved line height, margins, hyphenation, and kerning. As a result, the page may recompose after you change a setting instead of simply enlarging every character in place. Amazon describes the system in Enhanced Typesetting and Page Flip.
The control changed the page, but not the way you expected
- A larger font, wider margins, or more line spacing will usually create more pages because fewer words fit on each screen.
- A smaller margin may make the text block wider without changing the character size.
- Paragraph spacing affects breaks between paragraphs; it does not necessarily increase the gap between every line.
- A book’s headings, tables, images, and embedded styling may not respond like ordinary body text.
A practical sequence for finding a comfortable setting
There is no official numerical setting that guarantees comfort for every reader. Use a controlled sequence so you can tell which change helped:
- Start with the font size that lets you read a full paragraph without leaning toward the screen.
- Adjust line spacing one step at a time. Stop when lines are distinct without making the page feel unnecessarily sparse.
- Set margins after spacing. A narrower margin can shorten line length by making the text block wider; a wider margin can make each line shorter.
- Change paragraph spacing only if paragraph boundaries are difficult to see.
- Read several pages, including a page with dialogue, headings, or lists, because different structures can expose different layout problems.
- Record the settings you prefer for that device or app. If a later title looks different, check its format before abandoning your baseline.
When comparing two settings, change only one control at a time. This makes it clear whether text size, line spacing, or margins caused a page to become easier or harder to scan.
Reflowable and fixed-layout books compared
| Book type | How text is stored | Expected response to Aa settings | Common examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reflowable | Text and structure adapt to the screen and selected typography. | Font size, spacing, and supported margins generally recompose the page. | Many standard novels and text-heavy nonfiction books. |
| Fixed layout | Page elements retain a designed position or image-like page. | Reader typography controls may be absent or may not change the designed page. | Print replica, manga, comics, and some children’s books or textbooks. |
This distinction explains why the same Kindle can show a full set of controls in one title and a reduced set in another. It is a property of the book as delivered, not evidence that your e-reader has stopped working.
Device, app, and scope comparison
| Reading environment | Primary route | Typical controls | Scope and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle e-reader | Book > tap top > Aa | Font size; Layout controls for spacing and margins; other options on supported models | Menu varies by model and book format. |
| Newer Kindle e-reader, Kindle Scribe, Kindle Colorsoft | Settings > Screen and brightness > Display & text size | Device-level font-size baseline, plus in-book controls | Available on Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and higher and the named devices; exact software behavior can vary. |
| Android or iOS Kindle app | Book > tap top center > Aa | Font and spacing; margins in supported versions | Platform-specific capabilities; not identical to an e-reader. |
| Kindle for Web, PC, or macOS | Open reading controls and the available text-display menu | Capabilities listed separately by Amazon | Do not assume every mobile or e-reader control is present. |
| Fire tablet | Device: Settings > Display > Font Size; book: Aa | System font size plus book-level controls | Fire tablet instructions are separate from Kindle e-reader instructions. |
How to diagnose a stubborn title
- Confirm the environment. Write down whether you are on a Kindle e-reader, Android, iOS, Web, PC, macOS, or Fire tablet.
- Open a different, text-heavy book. If controls work there, the original title may be fixed-layout or contain embedded design restrictions.
- Check the book details. Look for accessibility or appearance information indicating whether visual adjustments are supported.
- Reopen the Aa menu. Make sure you are changing the Font or Layout tab rather than a separate reading feature.
- Check the model route. On supported newer e-readers, compare the in-book setting with Settings > Screen and brightness > Display & text size.
- Test one setting at a time. A page reflow or changed page count indicates that the setting applied, even if the resulting composition looks different from what you expected.
If a control remains unavailable after these checks, the documented explanation is usually model, platform, or book-format support rather than a hidden universal setting.
Quick Recap
What Kindle typography changes can and cannot do
- They can enlarge or reduce selectable text, alter supported margins, change line and paragraph spacing, and sometimes change alignment or orientation.
- They can change pagination. Page numbers, locations, and the number of screens in a chapter may shift after any layout change.
- They cannot redesign a fixed page. A print replica, comic panel, scanned page, or similarly fixed composition may remain unchanged.
- They are not a medical treatment. If reading causes persistent pain, headaches, or visual difficulty, adjust lighting and viewing distance as appropriate and seek professional advice; Kindle settings alone do not diagnose an eye problem.
