On a Galaxy Z Fold, start with Settings → Sounds and vibration for volume, use Sound quality and effects to change playback processing, and use Separate app sound when one app should play through a different device. Mono audio and left/right balance are separate headphone accessibility controls under Settings → Accessibility → Hearing enhancements.
The exact menu names and available switches depend on the Fold model, One UI release and connected audio equipment. The paths below follow Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 documentation for model SM-F956B and Samsung’s current Galaxy support guidance; another Fold generation may show fewer, additional or differently named options.

Choose the control that matches the problem
“The speaker is too quiet,” “voices are hard to hear,” and “music should play through Bluetooth” are different problems in One UI. Changing the wrong control can leave the original issue untouched. Use this map before opening a setting:

Adjust media, ringtone, notification and system volumes
Open the sound controls from the volume buttons
- Press either physical volume button. One UI opens a pop-up showing the current sound type and level.
- Expand the pop-up to reveal the other sound-type sliders.
- Drag the slider for the sound you actually want to change.
On the documented Fold6 interface, the categories are separate. Media playback has its own level; ringtone, notifications and system sounds do not automatically follow it. If a video or song is quiet, adjust the media slider rather than the ringtone slider. If an incoming call is quiet, adjust ringtone volume instead.
Why the expanded pop-up matters
The compact pop-up can show only the currently active sound type. Expanding it prevents a common mistake: raising a visible slider that belongs to notifications while leaving media unchanged. Make the adjustment while the relevant activity is in progress when possible—for example, start the video before changing media volume—so the displayed sound type is easy to identify.
Use the full Settings page when you need a deliberate check
Open Settings → Sounds and vibration. This page is the central place to review the available sound-level controls and related audio options. Labels and grouping can vary by One UI build, so use the wording shown on your Fold rather than assuming another generation has an identical layout.

Change playback character with Sound quality and effects
For processing rather than loudness, open Settings → Sounds and vibration → Sound quality and effects. The Fold6 manual lists several independent options. They can alter the way compatible music, video or game audio is presented, but they are not substitutes for raising the media slider.
Dolby Atmos and Dolby Atmos for gaming
Dolby Atmos provides selectable surround-sound modes on supported models. Samsung’s broader Galaxy instructions also describe a Dolby Atmos for gaming option in this area when the device and software provide it. Select the mode that matches what you are listening to, then test the same passage rather than judging from different recordings.
Do not assume that every Fold has both switches. Their presence is model- and software-dependent, and a gaming-specific mode may appear only on supported devices.
Equaliser
Equaliser offers genre-oriented presets. Choose a preset when you want a quick tonal change without manually adjusting frequency bands. An equaliser changes the balance of frequencies; it does not independently set the media, ringtone or notification level.

Boost dialogue raises voices in supported content, which can help when speech is masked by music or effects. Samsung notes that this feature is unavailable for multichannel audio content. If the switch is missing or cannot be selected for a particular program, the content format—not necessarily a fault with the phone—may be the reason.

Loudness normalisation
Loudness normalisation reduces volume differences between content and automatically raises low-volume content. It is intended for inconsistent recordings or programs, not for creating a permanently louder physical speaker. Because it changes relative levels between material, compare several clips before deciding whether it suits your listening.
Adapt sound
Adapt sound optimizes sound settings according to the choices available on the device. Follow the on-screen prompts if your Fold offers the feature. Its availability and exact behavior can differ by model, so do not treat it as a universal loudspeaker calibration tool.
UHQ upscaler
UHQ upscaler is intended for music and video when using supported wired or Bluetooth headphones. It is not a general switch for making the Fold’s built-in speakers louder. If you are listening through the phone speaker, the option may be unavailable or have no applicable effect.

Headphone requirements and testing
Samsung states that some sound-quality features require headphones and that availability depends on the model. Connect the supported headphones before judging whether a switch is missing. After changing one effect, replay the same section at a safe level; changing several effects at once makes it difficult to tell which one helped.
Send one app to another output with Separate app sound
Separate app sound is for routing an app’s media, not for boosting the built-in speaker. It can keep one app on the phone while another app plays through a separate device. Samsung’s Fold6 example is navigation audio on the phone while music plays through a vehicle’s Bluetooth speaker.
Set up app-specific routing
- Open Settings → Sounds and vibration → Separate app sound.
- Turn the feature on.
- Choose the multimedia app whose audio you want to route.
- Choose that app’s output device.
The selected device must be different from the phone’s main output for Separate app sound to work. For a Bluetooth destination, connect the device first; Samsung’s support instructions indicate that Bluetooth devices may appear in the picker only while connected.
Understand what Separate app sound does—and does not do
- It selects an app’s media destination; it does not raise the phone speaker’s maximum level.
- It does not replace the app’s own volume controls or the global media slider.
- It does not make two outputs identical. The app you selected follows its assigned device, while other audio follows the main output.
- If the app or device is not listed, check that the app is a supported multimedia source and that the destination is connected and different from the main output.
Example: navigation on the Fold, music in a car
Connect the vehicle’s Bluetooth speaker, leave the phone as the main output, then assign the music app to the vehicle under Separate app sound. Navigation can remain on the Fold while music is sent to the car. If both apps still come from one device, verify that the vehicle is not also selected as the phone’s main output and revisit the Separate app sound assignment.
Correct mono playback or an uneven headphone balance
For headphone listening, open Settings → Accessibility → Hearing enhancements. These controls affect channel behavior and balance; they are not equaliser controls for the Fold’s external loudspeakers.

Mono audio
Turn on Mono audio when you need the left and right channels combined. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 user manual states: “Mono output combines stereo sound into one signal that is played through all headphone speakers.” This can make content with separate left/right information audible in both headphone sides.
Left/right sound balance
Use Left/right sound balance to move the headphone image toward the left or right channel. A centered slider sends equal channel levels. This is useful when one headphone side is perceived as louder, but it does not increase the overall media level and does not tune the phone’s built-in speaker.
Do not use Hearing enhancements as a loudspeaker fix
If the Fold’s external speaker is quiet, return to the media slider or Sound quality and effects. Mono and balance are channel controls designed for headphone output, so changing them will not repair a blocked speaker grille, alter ringtone volume or route an app to Bluetooth.

Troubleshoot when a setting is missing or ineffective
The volume changed, but the video is still quiet
- Open the expanded volume pop-up and confirm that you moved the Media slider, not ringtone, notification or system sound.
- Check the video or music app’s own playback level if it provides one.
- Confirm where audio is going. If headphones, a car system or another Bluetooth device is active, the phone speaker is not the output being judged.
- Replay the same content after changing one control at a time so processing and level changes are not confused.
A sound-quality option is absent
Samsung’s documentation makes clear that availability varies by model, One UI release and connected equipment. Check the Fold model and software build, then connect supported headphones if the option is headphone-dependent. A missing Dolby Atmos, UHQ upscaler, Adapt sound or other switch does not mean that all audio controls are missing.
Boost dialogue will not turn on
Samsung notes that Boost dialogue is unavailable for multichannel audio content. Try a compatible stereo program to determine whether the limitation is content-related. Do not substitute Loudness normalisation if the specific goal is clearer voices; it addresses level differences rather than dialogue processing.
Bluetooth is not offered in Separate app sound
- Connect the Bluetooth device before opening the output selector.
- Return to Settings → Sounds and vibration → Separate app sound and select the app again.
- Make sure the chosen Bluetooth device differs from the Fold’s main output.
- If the menu itself is absent, verify the model and One UI version because Samsung says the feature is not universal.
Separate app sound is enabled but routing does not change
Confirm that the app is selected as a multimedia app and that the destination is still connected. Then check the main output: assigning an app to the same device already used by the phone defeats the separate-routing requirement. Remember that the setting routes media from the selected app; it does not reroute every sound generated by the phone.
Mono or balance altered normal stereo listening
Return to Settings → Accessibility → Hearing enhancements and switch Mono audio off or recenter Left/right sound balance when you no longer need the accessibility adjustment. These settings can intentionally change stereo presentation, so a changed headphone image is expected rather than evidence of a speaker failure.

- Identify the output you are listening to: the Fold’s speakers, headphones or another connected device.
- Set the appropriate sound-type level with the volume buttons and the expanded pop-up.
- If loudness is adequate but the character is wrong, open Sound quality and effects and change one processing option.
- If only one app needs another destination, configure Separate app sound and use a connected device different from the main output.
- Use Hearing enhancements only for headphone channel needs such as mono playback or left/right correction.
- Recheck the same content at a comfortable level after each change.
How the controls interact
These menus operate at different layers. The sound-type slider establishes the level for media, ringtone, notifications or system sounds. Sound quality and effects then processes compatible playback at the active output. Separate app sound changes the destination for the selected app’s media, while Hearing enhancements changes how two headphone channels are combined or balanced. Because the layers are distinct, turning on an effect cannot compensate for a muted media slider, and routing an app cannot repair a tonal problem.
For example, if music is audible but thin through headphones, first confirm the media level, then try an equaliser preset or another supported effect. If music is loud enough but must move to a car while navigation remains on the Fold, use Separate app sound instead of an equaliser. If only the right headphone side is audible, check balance and Mono audio rather than the phone-speaker volume.
Testing without losing track of a change
- Use one familiar song, video scene or game segment as your test material.
- Note the output shown by the phone: built-in speaker, headphones or a connected Bluetooth device.
- Change one slider or switch, then replay the same segment.
- Leave the setting in place only if it addresses the specific problem; otherwise return it and test the next control.
- When testing app routing, keep the main output and the assigned app output visibly different so the result is easy to verify.
This method separates a level change from a processing change and from a routing change. It also helps reveal when an option is unavailable because of the content format or connected equipment rather than because the phone is malfunctioning.
Model and One UI qualifications
The detailed menu list above comes from Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 user manual for model SM-F956B, with a document revision dated 2024-08-14. Samsung’s general Galaxy audio support guidance was updated 2026-04-28. Those references establish the paths and options for the documented software, not a guarantee that every Fold generation has the same switches.
One UI can rename, move or conditionally display controls. Connected headphones can also determine whether headphone-only processing appears. When helping another Fold user, ask for the exact model and One UI build before treating a missing menu as a defect. The reliable principle is to classify the need first—level, processing, routing or headphone channel behavior—and then look for the corresponding section in that device’s Sounds and vibration or Accessibility menus.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change media volume separately from ringtone volume on a Galaxy Z Fold?
Press a volume button, expand the volume pop-up, and drag the Media slider. Ringtone, notification and system sounds have separate sliders, so changing ringtone volume does not necessarily change a video or song.
Why can’t I find Dolby Atmos or UHQ upscaler?
Sound-quality options vary by Fold model, One UI release and connected equipment. UHQ upscaler is intended for supported wired or Bluetooth headphones, and some other effects may also require headphones. Check the model and software build before treating a missing switch as a fault.
Does Separate app sound make the Fold speaker louder?
No. Separate app sound routes a selected app’s media to a different output. It does not raise the built-in speaker’s maximum level or replace the media slider. The assigned output must differ from the phone’s main output.
Best Value
Why is my Bluetooth speaker missing from Separate app sound?
Connect the Bluetooth device first, then reopen Separate app sound. Samsung indicates that Bluetooth devices may appear only while connected. Also confirm that the Bluetooth device is not already the phone’s main output.
Can I keep navigation on the Fold while music plays in my car?
Yes, on models that provide Separate app sound. Connect the car’s Bluetooth system, leave the Fold as the main output, and assign the music app to the car. Navigation can then remain on the phone while music uses the vehicle output.
What does Boost dialogue do, and why is it unavailable?
Boost dialogue raises voices in supported content. Samsung notes that it is unavailable for multichannel audio, so a particular program’s format can prevent the switch from working. Loudness normalisation is different: it addresses level differences between content.

Open Settings → Accessibility → Hearing enhancements. Mono audio combines stereo into one signal for headphone speakers, while Left/right sound balance shifts the headphone channel levels. These controls do not equalize or increase the Fold’s external loudspeaker.
Why did my headphones stop sounding like normal stereo?
Mono audio may be enabled or the Left/right sound balance slider may be off-center. Return to Settings → Accessibility → Hearing enhancements, turn Mono audio off when it is no longer needed, and recenter the balance.
Should I buy a speaker or headphones to change these settings?
No purchase is required for the core controls. Volume, playback effects, app routing and accessibility settings are built into One UI. Headphones or a Bluetooth device are relevant only when you want to test or use headphone-dependent effects or an external route.
The Bottom Line
Match the menu to the job: use the expanded volume pop-up for sound levels, Sound quality and effects for playback character, Separate app sound for app-specific destinations, and Hearing enhancements for headphone channel behavior. If a control is missing, check the Fold model, One UI version and connected audio device before assuming the feature or phone is defective.
