Then confirm whether the lineup slot is still editable, compare legal alternatives under your scoring rules, and make the move only if the replacement is the better fit. A “ruled in” update does not guarantee a full workload, and an “Out” tag does not necessarily mean you can still swap the player.
1. Confirm the update and the player’s status
Availability news can change near tipoff. Check a current report and the designation shown in your fantasy platform before acting. Treat “ruled in” as confirmation that the player is available—not a promise of a normal workload. This guide covers the decision process, not predictions about any individual player’s availability or minutes.

2. Find out whether your lineup is daily or weekly
Lineup cadence determines how long a decision can affect your roster. NBA.com’s 2026–27 beginner guide distinguishes daily leagues, where managers can set a roster each night, from weekly leagues, where a lineup can be locked for the scoring period. In a weekly format, an injury on Tuesday may affect the rest of the week because you cannot freely adjust that slot each night. Read NBA.com’s beginner guide.
3. Check the exact lock deadline before choosing a replacement
Do not assume there is one universal deadline for your whole roster. Lock rules depend on the platform, contest, and league settings; some lock a player at their game’s start, while a weekly league may set a deadline based on each rostered player’s first scheduled game in the scoring period.

DraftKings contests
DraftKings says players can edit lineups before the first game starts. In a contest without late swap, edits stop once a game locks. In a late-swap contest, only players whose games have not started remain editable. DraftKings says each athlete locks at the scheduled start of their team’s game. An athlete tagged Out after the competition locks cannot be swapped, so an Out designation alone does not reopen a locked slot. Check the contest’s rules and the player’s status in the app; DraftKings says it may send status alerts when possible but leaves monitoring active status to the participant. CBS Sports weekly lineups
CBS Sports’ 2026–27 Free Fantasy Basketball rules say weekly lineups cannot be changed for that week once it begins. The deadline is five minutes before the first game in which each individual rostered NBA player is scheduled to play during that weekly period. A delayed or postponed game locks at its originally scheduled time. Because the deadline is tied to each player’s first scheduled game, check the rule for the affected player rather than relying on the start time of another game. CBS Sports’ 2026–27 official rules.

4. If the slot is open, compare the player with eligible alternatives
Once you know a move is allowed, compare the available options in context. Before replacing a player, check:
- Role and availability: Is the player expected to play, and is there reason to expect a limited role? Being active does not establish a full workload.
- Roster eligibility: Can the alternative legally fill the slot you are changing?
- Schedule: Does the alternative have a game during the relevant day or scoring period?
- Scoring rules: Which option fits your league’s scoring format? The choice may differ between formats.
- Lock status: Is the alternative’s own game still eligible for a lineup change?
Make a late swap only if the specific contest allows it and both the player and replacement remain eligible. If the slot has locked, do not assume that an injury designation or a cancelled game will create an exception; check that contest’s rules.

5. Account for scoring rules that change the cost of benching
NBA High Score
NBA.com’s 2026–27 guide describes High Score as a daily-edit format with a specific consequence: benching a player erases that player’s points already earned that week. In this format, compare the replacement not only with the player’s expected contribution, but also with the points already banked. NBA.com’s guide to daily, weekly, and High Score formats.
NBA Fantasy Salary Cap Edition
NBA Fantasy Salary Cap Edition describes automatic substitutions when a starter plays less than one minute. A substitute must still satisfy the lineup’s formation rules, and managers can set priority among bench choices. This is a format-specific mechanism, not a general guarantee that an inactive or injured starter will be replaced automatically. NBA Fantasy Salary Cap Edition: how to play.
6. Recheck your league’s settings and the final lineup
Platform examples do not establish the rules for every private league or contest. Before the relevant deadline, verify the active league’s cadence, player lock, late-swap eligibility, scoring format, and any automatic-substitution rules. After making a permitted change, confirm that the platform shows the intended player in the intended slot.
