How to Adjust EQ, Mic, and Sidetone on the Razer BlackShark V3 X HyperSpeed

Connect the Razer BlackShark V3 X HyperSpeed, open its device controls in Razer Synapse or the Razer Audio App, and choose the setting you want to change. EQ presets are customized in Synapse or the mobile Audio App; microphone controls are in Synapse’s device MIC tab; and sidetone (your own voice in the earcups) can be changed with the headset’s configuration roller or through Synapse’s MIC MONITORING (SIDETONE) control.

The instructions below apply to the standard RZ04-054201 model, not a separately laid-out console variant.

What each control changes

EQ changes the sound played to you, such as game audio, music, and calls. Microphone controls change the signal sent to other people. Sidetone is a monitor feed of your own microphone back into the headset; it does not change the volume heard by the person on the other end of a call.

EQ, mic, and sidetone: a quick comparison

Control Changes Primary route Platform considerations
EQ preset Playback balance for you Synapse or Razer Audio App Advanced tuning is documented for Synapse on Windows; mobile customization may expose fewer controls.
Microphone settings The signal transmitted to callers and teammates Synapse device MIC tab Microphone enhancements require Synapse on a Windows PC according to Razer.
Sidetone How much of your own voice returns to your ears Right-ear-cup configuration roller or Synapse monitoring control The roller is immediate; the software route requires Synapse.

This distinction prevents a common mistake: raising sidetone will not make teammates hear you more loudly, and changing EQ will not repair a muted microphone. Pick the control according to whether the problem is playback, transmitted voice, or your own monitor feed.

Check the model, connection, and software first

Confirm the exact headset

Use the standard BlackShark V3 X HyperSpeed identified by Razer as RZ04-054201. Razer publishes separate variants with different console support and layouts, so a button or control shown for another model may not match yours. The exact-model documentation is on Razer’s RZ04-054201 Support & FAQs page, updated 20 August 2026.

Choose the app for the job

Razer says advanced EQ tuning and microphone enhancements require Synapse on a Windows PC. If you are using macOS, a console, or a phone, you may not see every control exposed in Synapse. For mobile EQ preset customization, Razer lists this headset as supported in the Razer Audio App for iOS and Android; its Audio App support page contains the supported-product list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Audio App is useful when your goal is selecting or customizing a documented EQ preset from a phone. It is not a substitute for every Windows Synapse function. Conversely, Synapse is the appropriate starting point when you need advanced EQ tuning, microphone enhancements, or the software sidetone control.

Connect before opening the controls

Connect the headset using the connection mode you intend to use, then launch the app and select the BlackShark V3 X HyperSpeed. Razer’s SmartSwitch documentation says EQ presets can be customized in either Synapse or the Audio App. If the device is not listed, check that it is powered on, connected in the expected mode, and selected as the active device before looking for setting panels.

Connection mode matters because the application can only expose controls for a device it recognizes. If you switch modes after changing a setting, test again in the new mode. A missing panel can be a selection or platform issue rather than a fault in the headset.

Adjust EQ presets

EQ affects what you hear, not the microphone signal sent to a meeting or game. Start with a preset, listen to the result in the content you actually use, and then make small changes rather than judging the sound from a single short clip.

In Razer Synapse on Windows

  1. Connect and power on the BlackShark V3 X HyperSpeed.
  2. Open Razer Synapse and select the headset from the device list.
  3. Open the headset’s EQ or EQ-presets area.
  4. Choose a preset and use the available customization controls to change it.
  5. Apply or save the change if Synapse presents a save option, then listen to a familiar game, recording, or music track.

Razer’s product FAQ specifically distinguishes advanced EQ tuning as a Windows-Synapse function. Therefore, an EQ screen that appears in the mobile app may not expose every advanced control available in Synapse.

Test with the same volume and the same playback device while comparing presets. If you change several things at once, it becomes difficult to tell whether the audible difference came from the preset, the output device, or a volume change. Return to the active device page whenever you want to verify which headset profile you edited.

In the Razer Audio App on iOS or Android

  1. Install or open the Razer Audio App on your iOS or Android device.
  2. Connect the headset and select it when the app displays supported devices.
  3. Open the EQ presets section.
  4. Select the preset you want to alter and customize it using the controls shown by the current app version.
  5. Confirm the change in the app, then test playback at your normal listening level.

Razer documents mobile EQ-preset customization but does not promise that the mobile interface has the same controls as Synapse. Do not infer a missing control is a hardware fault until you have checked the platform and app version.

How to choose between Synapse and the Audio App

  • Choose Synapse when you have a Windows PC and need advanced EQ tuning or microphone enhancements.
  • Choose the Razer Audio App when you want the documented mobile EQ-preset workflow on iOS or Android.
  • Use the headset’s physical controls when you need an immediate adjustment and do not want to open software; the configuration roller is specifically the sidetone control.

If EQ controls are missing

  • Verify that the headset is the selected device, not your computer’s built-in speakers or another headset.
  • Check the connection mode and reconnect the headset before reopening the app.
  • On Windows, use Synapse for advanced EQ tuning rather than expecting the mobile interface to expose every option.
  • Update the relevant app when an update is offered, then check the device page again.
  • Keep the model distinction clear: instructions for another BlackShark or PlayStation variant may show different controls.
  • Play audio through the BlackShark while testing; a profile change cannot be heard through a different active output.

Configure the microphone

Microphone adjustments are made from the headset’s device page in Synapse. The exact enhancement names or numeric ranges can vary by operating system, Synapse release, and the calling application, so use the controls that your installation actually presents.

Open the microphone controls

  1. Connect the headset to the Windows PC on which Synapse is installed.
  2. Open Razer Synapse and select the BlackShark V3 X HyperSpeed.
  3. Open the device’s MIC tab.
  4. Change the microphone controls shown there, testing after each meaningful change in the app you use for calls or games.

Razer’s product FAQ says microphone enhancements require Synapse on Windows PC. If you are using another platform, basic input selection and the headset’s physical controls may be available even when Synapse enhancements are not.

Check the physical mute control

If other people cannot hear you, first check that the headset’s microphone mute toggle is off. A software slider cannot restore a signal that is muted at the headset. After changing the toggle, speak while watching the input meter in your operating system or calling app.

Select the headset as the input device

A computer or calling app can continue using a laptop microphone even while you are wearing the BlackShark. In the operating system’s sound settings and in the individual calling or game app, select the BlackShark V3 X HyperSpeed as the input device. Close and reopen the calling app if it does not refresh its device list immediately.

Separate microphone level from sidetone

Microphone level determines how strongly your voice is transmitted to others. Sidetone determines how strongly your own voice is played back to you. Adjust the microphone in the MIC tab; use the sidetone procedures in the next section when the problem is unwanted or insufficient self-audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make one microphone change at a time and speak at your normal distance from the boom. Check the receiving application’s input meter or a test call after each change. This confirms the signal path that your teammates actually use instead of relying only on what Synapse displays.

Adjust sidetone (microphone monitoring)

Sidetone is useful when you want to hear your own speech naturally while wearing closed earcups. Razer describes the headset’s configuration roller as the control that increases or decreases how much of your own voice you hear through the headset.

Use the configuration roller

  1. Put on the headset and speak at your normal volume.
  2. Locate the configuration roller under the right ear cup.
  3. Turn the roller to increase or decrease the amount of your microphone feed you hear.
  4. Stop when your voice sounds natural alongside the program audio.

This hardware route is the quickest way to change sidetone while you are already wearing the headset and does not require opening a software panel. It changes your monitoring level, not the level delivered to other people.

Use Synapse’s sidetone control

  1. Open Razer Synapse and select the BlackShark V3 X HyperSpeed.
  2. Choose the device’s MIC tab.
  3. Find MIC MONITORING (SIDETONE).
  4. Toggle monitoring on or off, or adjust its level using the control shown in your Synapse version.
  5. Speak and listen for the result, then leave monitoring disabled or lower it if the self-audio is distracting.

Razer’s instructions for turning off self-audio use this device-tab, MIC, and MIC MONITORING (SIDETONE) path. The label may be presented slightly differently after a software update, but the function is microphone monitoring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to use the roller versus Synapse

Use the roller for a fast change during a call or game, especially when you are already wearing the headset. Use Synapse when you want to see the monitoring control, turn it off deliberately, or combine the sidetone change with microphone adjustments. If you hear yourself unexpectedly, lowering the roller or disabling MIC MONITORING (SIDETONE) are the relevant fixes; changing EQ is not.

Choose the quickest route for your situation

Situation Best first action Why
You want different game or music balance Open EQ presets in Synapse or the Audio App EQ changes playback for you.
People cannot hear you Check the mute toggle, then select the headset as the input These checks rule out the two basic signal-path failures before software tuning.
Your voice sounds too quiet to you, but others hear you normally Raise sidetone with the right-ear-cup configuration roller or Synapse monitoring The symptom concerns your monitor feed, not transmitted microphone level.
Others hear your voice too quietly Open Synapse’s MIC tab and check the operating-system and app input selection Transmitted level and device selection are separate from sidetone.
You cannot find advanced EQ or mic enhancements Use Synapse on a Windows PC and confirm the selected model Razer limits those advanced controls to the Windows-Synapse workflow.
You hear yourself when you do not want to Lower the configuration roller or disable Synapse sidetone Those controls govern microphone monitoring.
You need a phone-based EQ change Use the Razer Audio App on iOS or Android Razer lists this headset as supported for mobile EQ-preset customization.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The headset is connected but absent from Synapse

  • Confirm the headset is powered on and connected in the mode you intended to use.
  • Close and reopen Synapse after reconnecting.
  • Check that Synapse is showing the standard RZ04-054201 device rather than another audio output.
  • Use the exact-model support page for current Synapse 4 support and device documentation.
  • Verify that another app has not selected a different headset as its active device.

You hear your own voice unexpectedly

  1. Open Synapse and select the headset.
  2. Go to MIC.
  3. Turn off MIC MONITORING (SIDETONE), or lower its level.
  4. If you need a temporary hardware adjustment, turn down the configuration roller under the right ear cup.

You do not hear yourself at all

Raise the sidetone level with the configuration roller or enable and raise MIC MONITORING (SIDETONE) in Synapse. Remember that sidetone is optional monitoring; its absence does not by itself indicate that the microphone is muted or broken.

People still cannot hear you

  • Check the headset’s physical mute toggle.
  • Select the BlackShark as the input in both the operating system and the calling or game app.
  • Confirm that the app is not using a different microphone after a device change.
  • Open Synapse’s MIC tab and test the controls available to your Windows installation.
  • If the app still shows no input, close and reopen it after selecting the headset.

EQ changes do not seem to apply

  • Make sure you edited the active headset profile, not another device.
  • Play audio through the BlackShark while testing; changing a profile while another output is active can make the result appear unchanged.
  • Reconnect the headset and reopen the app.
  • If you are on a phone, compare the controls with the Windows Synapse workflow; advanced EQ tuning is documented for Synapse on Windows.
  • Check the app version and connection mode before assuming the preset failed to save.

The controls look different from a guide

Razer can revise Synapse and Audio App screens. Follow the function name and the selected device rather than expecting an identical screenshot. Confirm that the guide is for RZ04-054201, since a PlayStation or other BlackShark variant can have a different layout.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

A practical setup sequence

For a clean configuration, change one signal path at a time. First select the headset as both playback and microphone device where required. Next set a comfortable sidetone level, because monitoring your own voice can make microphone level seem misleading. Then adjust microphone controls while watching the input meter in the app you actually use. Finish with EQ, listening to familiar content at a safe volume. This order makes it easier to tell whether a change affects what you hear, what others hear, or only the monitoring feed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save or apply each change when the current app offers that option, and test again after switching connection modes. A setting visible in one app or platform is not proof that the same control is available everywhere. If you are troubleshooting with someone else, ask them to confirm what they hear while you separately judge your own sidetone; those are two different signal paths.

Relevant hardware and support details

Razer lists the headset at 270 g on the product page; that is Razer’s specification, with no publication year stated (page accessed 2026). Weight does not alter the EQ, microphone, or sidetone procedure, but it identifies the product specification associated with this model.

For model-specific diagrams, Synapse 4 compatibility, and the device layout, use Razer’s BlackShark V3 X HyperSpeed RZ04-054201 support page. For supported mobile devices and app behavior, consult the Razer Audio App support page. These pages can change as Razer updates its software, so the labels in your installation take precedence over an older screenshot.

You do not need a replacement microphone or another accessory to adjust these settings on the headset you already own. The documented controls are provided through the headset, Synapse, and the Razer Audio App; accessory purchases are not part of the setup.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I adjust EQ without a Windows PC?

Yes. Razer lists the BlackShark V3 X HyperSpeed as supported by the Razer Audio App for iOS and Android, where EQ presets can be customized. Razer says advanced EQ tuning requires Synapse on a Windows PC, so the mobile app may not expose every control.

Where are the microphone settings in Synapse?

Select the headset in Synapse, open its device page, and choose the MIC tab. The enhancement names and available ranges can vary by Synapse version and operating system.

How do I turn off hearing my own voice?

In Synapse, select the headset, open MIC, and disable or lower MIC MONITORING (SIDETONE). You can also turn down the configuration roller under the right ear cup.

Does sidetone make my teammates hear me more loudly?

No. Sidetone is your own microphone feed played back into your headset. The microphone level and input-device selection determine what other people receive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t people hear me even though sidetone works?

Check that the physical microphone mute toggle is off, then select the BlackShark as the input in both the operating system and the calling or game application. Sidetone can be audible locally even when the app is using another input.

Why are advanced controls missing?

Confirm the exact RZ04-054201 model, connection mode, selected device, and app version. Razer documents advanced EQ tuning and microphone enhancements through Synapse on a Windows PC; mobile and other platforms may show fewer controls.

Is the PlayStation variant covered by these steps?

No. These instructions target the standard RZ04-054201 BlackShark V3 X HyperSpeed. Razer publishes separate variants, whose layouts and controls may differ.

The Bottom Line

Use Synapse on Windows for the fullest EQ and microphone controls, and the Razer Audio App for the documented mobile EQ-preset workflow. Adjust sidetone with the right-ear-cup configuration roller or Synapse’s MIC MONITORING (SIDETONE) control. If anything is missing, verify the RZ04-054201 model, active connection, selected device, platform, and app version first.
