How to adjust display, audio, and comfort settings on Android XR glasses

Android XR settings depend on which kind of device you are wearing. A standalone Android XR headset can expose system controls for brightness, visual accessibility, hearing, straps, and lenses. AI glasses are different: Google describes them as “lightweight, companion devices that connect to a primary device, like a smartphone.” They do not run the full Android XR operating system, so many adjustments may live in a paired-phone app or in the glasses maker’s own instructions.

Use the procedures below as a guide to supported Android XR devices and headsets. If you are wearing companion glasses, first identify the exact model and open its companion-device controls. Do not assume that a glasses frame has headset lenses, straps, an on-device Settings app, or every accessibility option listed here.

First identify whether you have a headset or companion glasses

The phrase “Android XR glasses” can describe two very different products. The distinction determines where settings are found and which instructions apply.

Standalone Android XR headsets

A standalone headset runs the XR operating system on the device. It normally has a Home screen, Quick Settings, and a Settings app. The documented Android XR accessibility controls in this guide are intended for this class of device where the manufacturer and market enable them.

AI or companion glasses

Companion glasses connect to a primary device such as a phone. They may handle audio, cameras, notifications, and an assistant while the phone supplies the operating system and settings interface. Brightness, captions, balance, or fit controls may therefore be in a phone app, in the phone’s accessibility settings, on the glasses’ hardware buttons, or nowhere as a user-adjustable option. Read the model’s setup and accessibility instructions before trying to follow a headset menu path.

Question Standalone headset Companion glasses
Where are system settings? Usually on the headset in Settings and Quick Settings. Often on the paired phone or in the manufacturer’s companion app; the exact location is model-specific.
Does it run the full Android XR operating system? Yes, when identified as a standalone Android XR device. No. Google describes AI glasses as lightweight companion devices connected to a primary device.
Are adjustable lenses and head straps expected? Some headsets provide them; follow that model’s setup instructions. Do not assume either feature exists on a glasses frame.
Can every option in this guide be used? Only options exposed by that device, software version, and market. Only controls documented for the exact glasses model and its paired-device software.

Google’s Android XR accessibility overview warns that “Specific navigation and feature names may vary across markets and devices.” Treat the labels below as the documented route and feature set, not a guarantee that every headset displays every item.

Adjust screen brightness from Quick Settings

Brightness is the quickest display change on a supported Android XR headset. The Android XR navigation guidance identifies Screen brightness as a Quick Settings function.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Return to the headset’s Home screen.
  2. Open Quick Settings using the device’s documented gesture or controller shortcut. The gesture can differ by headset, so use the on-screen hint if one appears.
  3. Find Screen brightness.
  4. Move the brightness control until the image is readable without glare or eye strain.
  5. Close Quick Settings and check text, icons, and any high-contrast edges in the app you are using.

Brightness and audio volume are separate controls. Raising brightness will not make an alert or spoken prompt louder, and increasing volume will not improve a dim display. If Screen brightness is missing, check that you are on a standalone Android XR device and that the headset software exposes the control. Companion glasses may instead use a phone or app setting, and some glasses have no user-adjustable display brightness because their optical system is designed differently.

Choosing a comfortable brightness

  • In a dark room, lower brightness gradually rather than switching from maximum to minimum. A very bright virtual panel against a dark environment can feel harsh.
  • In a bright room, increase brightness only enough to preserve contrast. More brightness cannot correct a lens reflection, poor fit, or an application with weak contrast.
  • After changing brightness, view both text and moving content. A setting that works for a static menu may feel uncomfortable during a bright, animated scene.

Open the visual accessibility controls

For display size, text, magnification, contrast, color, motion, and related assistance, open Settings > Accessibility on a supported headset. The exact menu names and order can vary by device and market.

These controls affect how the operating system presents content. An individual XR application can still use its own rendering, text scale, color treatment, or motion settings. If a change appears in menus but not inside one app, look for that app’s accessibility or comfort options as well.

Display size and text controls

Display-size and text controls enlarge interface elements or lettering so that menus, notifications, and controls are easier to read. Increase one setting at a time and revisit the Home screen after each change.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accessibility.
  3. Open the entry for Display size and text, or the equivalent display/text control shown on your device.
  4. Adjust text size, display size, or both to the smallest level that makes the content reliably readable.
  5. Return to the application you use most and verify that buttons, labels, and dialog boxes still fit on screen.

Large text can improve legibility but may cause wrapping, clipping, or fewer controls to fit in a virtual panel. If an app’s layout becomes difficult to use, reduce the scale one step and use magnification for occasional small details.

Magnification

Magnification enlarges a portion of the display rather than permanently increasing every interface element. It is useful for reading a small label, inspecting a control, or compensating temporarily for reduced visual acuity.

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Choose Magnification if it is listed.
  3. Read the on-screen instructions for the activation gesture or shortcut used by your headset.
  4. Activate magnification only when needed, then use the same shortcut to return to the normal view.

Because magnification changes the visible area, it can make navigation harder while active. Turn it off before selecting a control near the edge of a virtual panel, and avoid using it while walking or performing a task that requires a wide field of view.

Contrast and color controls

Accessibility may include controls for contrast and color. These can help distinguish text, icons, and edges when standard colors blend together or when bright and dark areas are difficult to separate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Look for contrast, color, or color-correction controls. The wording can differ by device.
  3. Apply one change at a time and test it in a menu, a photo or video, and an XR app.
  4. Keep the setting that improves recognition without making skin tones, warning colors, or status indicators misleading.

Color changes are not a substitute for good contrast in an application. If an app remains difficult to read, use its own theme or contrast option when available.

Reduce animations

Reduce animations is intended for motion sensitivity and can reduce movement in supported apps. It does not guarantee that every XR experience becomes static: an application may render its own transitions, camera movement, or immersive effects.

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Select Reduce animations if your device lists it.
  3. Enable the control.
  4. Reopen the app or scene that caused discomfort and check whether supported transitions are calmer.

If you still feel nausea, dizziness, headache, eye strain, or disorientation, stop using the headset, remove it, and rest. Reduce animations cannot correct every source of motion discomfort, including latency, scene design, or an incorrect fit.

TalkBack and audio descriptions

Google’s Android XR accessibility materials also list TalkBack and audio descriptions. TalkBack can provide spoken assistance for navigating interface elements, while audio descriptions add verbal descriptions when supported content supplies them. Availability and exact activation steps are device- and market-dependent, so use the labels and instructions shown under Settings > Accessibility.

Adjust captions and hearing-related audio options

Android XR documents several hearing and caption controls under Settings > Accessibility. These are accessibility features, not a complete guide to ordinary media-volume controls.

Live Caption

Live Caption can display text for supported speech or media. If it is listed on your headset:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Accessibility.
  3. Select Live Caption and enable it.
  4. Open its caption preferences to adjust the available language, text size, and style options.

Caption availability can depend on language, device, software, audio source, and market. If no caption appears, verify that the feature supports the language and source you are using, then check the app’s own caption setting.

Caption preferences: language, size, and style

Caption preferences let you make text easier to follow without changing the underlying audio. Where the controls are provided, choose the language you understand, increase text size only as far as necessary, and select a style with enough contrast against the scene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large captions can cover more of an immersive view. If that happens, try a higher-contrast style at a smaller size before disabling captions entirely.

Mono audio

Mono audio combines left and right channels so that important sound is not lost when you hear one side better than the other or when an audio source is effectively available in only one channel.

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Find Mono audio.
  3. Turn it on and test speech, alerts, and music.

Mono audio changes stereo separation. Leave it off when preserving directional or left/right effects is more important and your hearing setup does not require combining channels.

Left or right sound balance

The balance control shifts audio toward the left or right channel. It is useful when one ear receives sound more clearly than the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Choose the Left or right sound balance control, or a similarly named balance option.
  3. Move the slider a small amount toward the side that needs more sound.
  4. Play speech or a familiar test track and make a final fine adjustment.

A balance change does not increase total system volume; it redistributes the two channels. If one side is silent because of a connection, hardware, or app problem, troubleshoot that fault rather than compensating with an extreme balance setting.

Hearing aid support

Where available, Hearing aid support appears in the same accessibility area. Open it and follow the pairing or connection instructions shown by the headset. The exact hearing-aid protocol, compatible models, and controls are not established by the general Android XR overview, so do not assume that every hearing aid or glasses model will connect directly.

Do not confuse accessibility audio with ordinary volume

The documented overview covers captions, mono audio, hearing-aid support, and channel balance. It does not provide a complete, universal procedure for changing general media volume on every Android XR device.

For ordinary volume, use the headset’s physical volume controls, controller controls, Quick Settings tile, or the paired phone or app instructions supplied for your model. If a button changes volume but an accessibility slider does not, that is expected: volume is a device or media control, while balance and mono audio alter how channels are presented.

Improve physical comfort and visual clarity on a headset

Google’s headset setup guidance treats fit as a physical setup task, separate from accessibility settings. A correct fit can make text clearer and reduce pressure, blur, and motion discomfort.

Adjust the straps

  1. Put on the headset without tightening it fully.
  2. Position the display so it sits evenly in front of both eyes.
  3. Tighten the straps enough to hold the headset securely without painful pressure.
  4. Move your head gently and confirm that the headset does not slide or wobble.
  5. Recheck the view after a few minutes; padding can settle and require a small adjustment.

A strap adjustment should hold the headset in place, not force it against your face. Persistent pressure, slipping, or an uneven image can indicate that the fit system is unsuitable or that the headset needs service.

Follow the on-screen lens instructions

During setup, follow the headset’s on-screen lens instructions for visual clarity. Use the adjustment provided by that model and make changes slowly while looking at text or a high-contrast object. Not every headset has adjustable lenses, and the available range differs by device.

If the image stays blurry, double vision continues, or you cannot obtain a comfortable view after following setup guidance, contact the manufacturer. Do not force lens mechanisms or improvise padding that could obstruct sensors, vents, or tracking cameras.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Glasses-specific fit limits

Do not transfer headset strap or lens instructions to companion glasses. A glasses frame may use nose pads, temple arms, removable inserts, or a prescription-lens process instead. Use the model’s own fit and cleaning instructions, and consult the manufacturer if the frame presses, slips, or produces an unclear image.

A practical setup sequence

When configuring a new supported headset, use this order so that physical problems do not get mistaken for software problems.

  1. Identify the device type. Confirm whether it is a standalone Android XR headset or companion glasses connected to a phone.
  2. Complete physical setup. For a headset, adjust straps and follow on-screen lens guidance. For glasses, use the model-specific frame and companion-device instructions.
  3. Set brightness. From the Home screen, open Quick Settings and adjust Screen brightness.
  4. Set visual accessibility. Open Settings > Accessibility and test display/text size, magnification, contrast or color controls, and Reduce animations as needed.
  5. Set hearing accessibility. In the same Accessibility area, configure Live Caption, caption preferences, hearing-aid support, mono audio, or left/right balance when available.
  6. Test in the real conditions. Check a menu, spoken content, captions, and an XR app in the room where you normally use the device.
  7. Record what changed. If a future update resets a control, you will know which settings restored comfortable use.

Troubleshoot common problems

The brightness control is missing

  • Confirm that you opened Quick Settings from the headset Home screen, not a phone’s notification panel.
  • Check whether the device is companion glasses whose brightness is controlled by a paired app or is fixed by design.
  • Install the device’s available system update and restart it, then check Quick Settings again.
  • If the display remains too bright or dim, look for model-specific display controls or contact the manufacturer.

An Accessibility option is not listed

  • Feature names and navigation can vary across markets and devices.
  • Use the Accessibility search or browse related Display, Hearing, or Interaction categories.
  • Check whether the option belongs to the phone or companion app rather than the headset.
  • Do not install an unverified utility to imitate a missing system feature; it may not integrate correctly with XR rendering or audio routing.

Captions are inaccurate or absent

  • Verify that Live Caption is enabled and that the spoken language is supported.
  • Check the source app’s own caption setting.
  • Increase caption contrast or size if text is present but difficult to read.
  • Remember that Live Caption may not process every audio source or every language.

Audio is louder on one side

  • Check whether the left/right balance slider was moved accidentally.
  • Test with mono audio to determine whether channel separation is causing missing speech.
  • Check the physical speaker, earbud, hearing aid, or connection on the quiet side.
  • Restore the balance to center after testing unless a hearing difference requires another position.

The image is still uncomfortable after changing settings

  • Lower brightness and reduce motion in supported apps.
  • Recheck headset strap tension and lens position.
  • Take a break and stop immediately if you feel pain, dizziness, nausea, or persistent eye strain.
  • If fit or clarity remains poor, contact the manufacturer instead of forcing a software workaround.

Settings checklist

Goal Documented place to start What to verify
Screen brightness Home screen > Quick Settings > Screen brightness Readable text without glare or excessive brightness.
Larger text or interface Settings > Accessibility > Display size and text (name may vary) Labels remain readable without clipping.
Temporary enlargement Settings > Accessibility > Magnification You can activate and exit the model’s magnification shortcut.
Contrast or color assistance Settings > Accessibility > relevant contrast/color control Important indicators remain distinguishable.
Less motion Settings > Accessibility > Reduce animations Supported app transitions are calmer.
Captions Settings > Accessibility > Live Caption and caption preferences Language, size, and style suit the content and scene.
Channel correction Settings > Accessibility > Mono audio or Left/right sound balance Speech is audible without unnecessary stereo loss.
Headset clarity and stability Physical setup instructions for the headset Straps hold securely and on-screen lens guidance produces a clear view.

What these controls cannot guarantee

Android XR settings are not identical across all devices. A feature can be documented by Google yet absent from a particular model, software release, or market. An application can override system presentation, and companion glasses can expose only a subset of phone or app controls. No general Android XR page establishes a universal list of compatible hearing aids, a universal glasses fit procedure, or a universal method for ordinary media volume.

Use the system controls first on a standalone headset, then consult the exact model’s documentation when a menu or physical adjustment is missing. For companion glasses, begin with the paired phone and manufacturer app rather than expecting headset menus.
