How to Adjust Audio Quality in Apple Music on iPhone, Mac, Windows, and Android

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To adjust Apple Music quality, open Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality on iPhone, or the app’s Playback settings on Mac and Windows. On Android, go to More > Settings > Audio Quality. From there, choose streaming and download quality separately; enabling Lossless does not mean every track or connection will play at the highest resolution.

Change Apple Music audio quality on your device

The quality controls let you choose different settings for streaming and downloads. The available options and labels can vary by app version; Apple’s device guides describe these paths:

iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps > Music > Audio Quality.
  3. Turn Lossless Audio on or off.
  4. Set the quality you want for cellular streaming, Wi-Fi streaming, and downloads.

Apple lists Lossless at up to 24-bit/48 kHz and Hi-Res Lossless at up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Actual playback depends on the track, network conditions, and connected audio equipment. Apple’s iPhone audio-quality guide

Mac

  1. Open the Music app.
  2. Choose Music > Settings > Playback.
  3. Enable or disable Lossless audio.
  4. Choose the quality options for streaming and downloads.

The Playback panel also has separate controls for Dolby Atmos, Sound Check, and Sound Enhancer. Apple’s Mac Playback settings guide

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Windows

  1. Open the Apple Music app.
  2. Select Sidebar Actions > Settings > Playback.
  3. Turn Lossless audio on or off.
  4. Choose streaming and download quality.

Dolby Atmos, Sound Check, and Sound Enhancer are also listed in Playback settings, but they are not the lossless quality selector. Apple’s Windows Playback settings guide

Android

  1. Open Apple Music and tap More > Settings > Audio Quality.
  2. Enable or disable Lossless.
  3. Choose the quality for streaming and downloads.

Apple’s Android guidance recommends a wired connection for lossless playback. Whether a DAC is needed above 48 kHz depends on the device. Apple’s lossless audio guidance

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

What Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless mean

Apple Music uses Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), which preserves the original data in the encoded audio. Apple says most of its catalog is available in ALAC across a range from 16-bit/44.1 kHz (CD quality) through 24-bit/192 kHz. Its Lossless setting supports up to 24-bit/48 kHz; Hi-Res Lossless supports up to 24-bit/192 kHz. These are maximums, not a guarantee that every song or device will deliver those rates. Apple’s lossless audio guidance Apple’s iPhone audio-quality guide

Apple characterizes the difference between AAC and lossless as “virtually indistinguishable.” That is Apple’s description, not a promise that every listener will hear the same result. Consider your equipment and practical constraints along with the maximum resolution.

Choose quality for streaming and downloads

Choice What to consider
Cellular streaming Higher quality, including Lossless, uses significantly more mobile data. Choose a setting that fits your data plan.
Wi-Fi streaming Higher quality uses more data over Wi-Fi as well; the practical impact depends on your connection or data limits.
Downloads Lossless files use significantly more device storage. Choose a setting that fits the space you have available.

Apple notes that higher resolutions use more data than lower ones. Streaming and download settings are separate, so you can, for example, keep cellular quality lower while choosing a higher setting for Wi-Fi or downloads. Apple’s lossless audio guidance

Replace an existing download

Changing the quality setting does not upgrade a song that is already downloaded in a non-lossless version. Delete that download, then download the song again from the Apple Music catalog with Lossless enabled. Apple’s lossless audio guidance

Check your headphones, speakers, and DAC

Lossless settings alone do not make a Bluetooth connection lossless. Apple says AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and Beats wireless headphones use Apple’s AAC Bluetooth codec, and Bluetooth playback is not lossless. Apple supports lossless listening through wired headphones, receivers, or powered speakers; some devices’ built-in speakers are also supported. Apple’s lossless audio guidance Apple’s lossless audio guidance

A DAC is not required just to enable Lossless or listen at up to 48 kHz. For higher sample rates, requirements depend on the device:

Apple’s device and connection guidance

Keep Dolby Atmos and other Playback controls separate

On Mac and Windows, Dolby Atmos, Sound Check, and Sound Enhancer appear alongside playback settings, but each serves a different purpose: the lossless selector controls streaming and download quality, Sound Check levels volume, and Sound Enhancer processes the sound. Dolby Atmos and lossless availability can vary by country or region, and lossless availability also depends on the track. Apple Music itself is not available in every country or region.
