That changes the default tone for notifications. To use a different tone for one app, select a notification category in that app’s settings and change its sound there.
Put the audio file in the Notifications folder
Samsung’s instructions use a file stored on the phone in internal storage. You can use My Files to copy an existing audio file or a saved voice recording into the Notifications folder. Copying keeps the original in its current location; moving it relocates the file.

- Open My Files and find the audio file. Check Audio or browse to the folder where you saved it.
- Touch and hold the file, then tap Copy. Choose Move instead only if you want to relocate the original.
- Return to My Files home and open Internal storage.
- Open the
Notificationsfolder. If it is not visible, change the folder filter from Essentials to All. - If the folder does not exist, create a folder named
Notificationsin internal storage. - Tap Copy here or, if you chose Move, Move here.
Samsung’s Australian guide demonstrates this process with an MP3 file; its instructions are for Australian-variant Galaxy devices. Folder and button labels can vary by model and software version. Samsung Australia’s audio-file guide was updated August 10, 2026.

Set the default notification sound
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds and vibration > Notification sounds.
- Select your copied audio file from the available sounds.
- Go back to apply the selection.
The custom file should appear in the sound list after it is placed in the internal-storage Notifications folder. This setting changes the default notification tone, not necessarily the sound for every individual app. Samsung warns that menu names and locations vary across Galaxy models and software versions. Samsung India’s instructions cover the system-wide tone and the missing-folder remedy.

Give one app its own notification sound
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the app, then tap Notifications.
- Choose the relevant notification category. Depending on the app and phone, this may be labeled General notifications or Notification categories.
- Tap Sound and select the custom file.
This changes the selected category only, where the app and software version expose a sound control. A category or sound option may be unavailable or grayed out for some apps. Samsung’s Caribbean support guide shows an app-specific workflow and notes that screens can differ by model and software.
If notification categories are missing
For Android 14 / One UI 6.1 and later, Samsung Japan advises checking Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Manage notification categories for each app and turning it on if needed. This version-scoped guidance does not establish that the setting is required on every Galaxy phone; labels and availability may vary. Samsung Japan’s guide, updated June 9, 2026, also describes choosing a sound for an app category.

Which audio files work?
Samsung Japan lists saved voice recordings and MP3, WAV, and AAC files as possible custom notification sounds, but cautions that compatibility is not guaranteed. A WAV or other file may fail on some devices or Android versions. Samsung does not state a universal maximum clip length, so prepare a suitably short sound without assuming a specific duration limit.

Troubleshoot a sound that does not appear or play
- The file is missing from the sound picker: Confirm it is in internal storage’s
Notificationsfolder. In My Files, switch the folder view from Essentials to All if needed. - The file is in the folder but cannot be selected or used: Try a different supported audio file, such as an MP3. Samsung notes that file compatibility can vary by device and Android version.
- You cannot change a particular app’s tone: Check whether the app has a notification category with a Sound control. Some apps do not expose that option.
- You have selected a tone but cannot hear notifications: Check Settings > Sounds and vibration > Sound mode and select Sound. Samsung India identifies Sound mode as a setting to check when notification sounds cannot be heard.
- The menu path does not match: Samsung’s guides caution that labels and locations differ by model and software version. Look for the equivalent notification-sound or app-notification controls in your phone’s Settings.
