MOBI is not on Amazon’s current list of supported Send to Kindle formats, as checked on Amazon’s help pages in October 2026, so a legacy MOBI file is not a dependable starting point.
Why EPUB or PDF works and MOBI does not
Amazon’s Send to Kindle help page lists EPUB and PDF, among other formats, as supported for personal documents. MOBI does not appear on that list. If you have a MOBI file, the reliable step is to obtain an EPUB or PDF version of the same book first and send that instead.

Amazon’s publishing rules are a separate matter. Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) stopped supporting MOBI for reflowable ebooks on August 1, 2021, and for fixed-layout ebooks effective March 18, 2025. KDP now recommends EPUB, DOCX, or KPF for publishing. Those dates govern manuscripts submitted to KDP. They do not decide whether a personal file can be sent to your Kindle, which is governed by the Send to Kindle format list.

Send to Kindle offers several routes: a web upload, an email address, the Kindle app for iOS or Android, and a desktop Send to Kindle application where it is available. Amazon states that the service is provided at no additional cost. In its Customer Service help, Amazon describes it this way: “The Send to Kindle service allows you to send documents to your Kindle library on your Kindle devices and Kindle app at no additional cost.”

Option 1: Send to Kindle for Web (recommended)
The web upload is the route Amazon documents most completely, so it is the one to use if you want a reproducible result.
- Sign in to Amazon’s Send to Kindle web upload page with the same Amazon account you use in the Kindle app on your iPad.
- Choose your EPUB or PDF file. Web uploads are limited to 200 MB or smaller.
- Turn on Add to your library if you want the book to be available on devices linked to the account. Leave it off and the file is sent without being added to your library.
- Open the Kindle app on your iPad and allow it time to sync. The file should appear in your library once the device has an internet connection.
Amazon’s help material does not describe the exact iPad screens for the upload, so the steps above follow the web workflow rather than any iPad-specific interface.

Option 2: The Kindle app for iOS
Amazon’s help pages list sending from the iOS Kindle app as one of the routes. They do not give a screen-by-screen iPad procedure for Files or the Share sheet, and the menu labels in the app may differ from what is described elsewhere. If you use this route, check the current menus in your version of the app. Amazon also says that Kindle for iOS supports highlights and text notes on documents imported with Send to Kindle. Its help table labels handwritten sticky notes as read-only on iOS.

Option 3: Email
Attach the file to the unique Send to Kindle email address for your Kindle app or device. Three conditions apply:
- The sending address must be on your account’s Approved Personal Document Email List.
- The attachment must be a supported file type.
- The receiving device must be connected to the internet to receive the delivery.
Email allows up to 25 attachments and 50 MB in total. For a larger set of documents, Amazon advises compressing them into a ZIP file. Its conversion service opens the ZIP automatically and converts the documents inside.

Route limits compared
| Route | Size limit | Requirements | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Send to Kindle for Web | 200 MB or smaller per upload (Amazon Customer Service help page) | Amazon account; turn on “Add to your library” to make the file available on linked devices | The file is on a computer, or you can reach it from a browser |
| Email to your Send to Kindle address | Up to 25 attachments and 50 MB total (Amazon Customer Service help page); larger sets go in a ZIP | Sender on the Approved Personal Document Email List; supported file; receiving device online | The file is small and you have an approved email address |
| Kindle app for iOS | Not stated in Amazon’s help material | Kindle app on the iPad; exact iPad steps not documented by Amazon | The file is already on the iPad and you accept checking the current menus yourself |
| Desktop Send to Kindle application | Not stated in Amazon’s help material | Available only where Amazon offers it | You send files from a computer regularly and the application is available to you |
When a conversion fails
If Amazon cannot convert a document, its troubleshooting advice points to four checks:
- Remove password protection or security settings from the file.
- For DOC or DOCX files, remove Word ink drawings.
- Confirm that the document language is one Amazon supports.
- Remove large or complex tables.
These are Amazon’s recommended fixes for conversion problems, not guarantees that a given file will convert.

What to do with an existing MOBI file
Because MOBI is absent from Send to Kindle’s supported format list, sending a MOBI file directly is not a documented route. Check whether the bookseller or source you bought the title from offers an EPUB or PDF download, and send that version through one of the routes above. The KDP publishing dates explain why Amazon’s publishing side moved away from MOBI, but they do not change what the personal-document service accepts.
Amazon’s help pages were checked in October 2026. Format lists and limits can change, so confirm them on the Send to Kindle help page before you rely on a specific limit.
