Use your own merchant UPI QR, confirm the payee details, add it as a clear overlay in the promo video, and preview the exported loop inside the actual YouTube Live layout before publishing. A QR overlay is a payment route—not a YouTube checkout feature—and scanability depends on how it appears to viewers on their devices.
1. Get and verify the right merchant QR

Download the QR from the seller’s payment app or merchant provider. Use the merchant QR for the business receiving payment; do not rebuild payment details from memory or use a code copied from an unverified source.

Check the displayed payee or merchant details against the intended seller before putting the code in a public video. If the payment app or provider offers a safe way to verify the code, follow its instructions.

Keep the original QR image intact. Avoid cropping its edges, distorting its proportions, or covering any part of the code with text or graphics. NPCI’s BHIM-UPI Guidelines concern merchant payments and QR scanning, but do not prescribe YouTube overlay dimensions or display durations.

2. Add the QR to the promo video

Open the promo segment in your video editor and place the QR where it does not hide the product, price, key offer terms, or demonstrations. Keep the product identity and payment instruction visually distinct from the code.

Add a short, direct call to action, such as “Scan to pay” or “Scan to order,” only if it accurately describes the payment flow. Include any essential offer or fulfilment terms viewers need before paying.

Choose a presentation that suits the segment. A full-screen QR card is easier to notice but interrupts the product presentation; a smaller corner overlay interferes less but may be harder to scan. These are layout trade-offs, not measured performance findings.

Decide how often the QR appears. A brief card can be repeated between product demonstrations; a persistent corner placement gives late-arriving viewers another chance to see it. There is no established universal size, contrast ratio, display duration, or scan-success threshold for a YouTube QR overlay.
3. Export and test it in the live layout

Export the segment in the aspect ratio and resolution intended for the stream. Check that the QR is sharp in the encoded file rather than relying only on the editor preview.

Put the exported segment into the streaming layout with the other planned graphics, then inspect it in the streaming software preview or YouTube Live preview. Check the code at the size viewers will actually see it, including on a phone.

Test the displayed code with a payment app, verifying that it resolves to the intended merchant before publication. Avoid covering it with a ticker, chat panel, product graphic, or other overlay.

Consider how viewers will scan. Someone watching on the same phone they would use to scan may need another route; mention saving the QR image or using a second device only if the payment provider’s flow supports that option.
4. Choose QR, YouTube product tags, or both
YouTube Shopping lets eligible creators tag their own or third-party products in live streams. Availability depends on eligibility and other conditions, including territory, shipping, rights, and content status; check current eligibility and whether tags appear for the specific stream and audience. Product tags and a QR solve different problems, and YouTube does not publish a conversion comparison between them.

5. Keep the promotion useful and policy-aware

Use a trustworthy destination. YouTube’s external links policy applies to ways of directing viewers off-platform, including destinations shown in video or live content. Do not direct viewers to prohibited, misleading, or phishing destinations. The policy says affiliate content itself does not violate the Terms of Use, while excessive affiliate posting can violate spam policy.

Make a live promo more than a generic loop. YouTube says monetized videos, including live streams, should be original and authentic. Repetitive or mass-produced content may not qualify for monetization. A repeated offer is not automatically a violation, but add distinct value through product details, demonstrations, narration, or useful updates rather than relying on interchangeable template segments.

Plan the live selling session. YouTube recommends planning the purpose, structure, pace, product selection, and product order. Its guidance says shopping live streams work best for at least 30 to 60 minutes; that is a recommendation, not a guaranteed result. The same page reports that 89% of viewers agreed YouTube creators give recommendations they can trust, from Google/Talk Shoppe’s U.S. 2021 study of 2,000 adults ages 18–64. 6. Troubleshoot before going live
