How to Add Subtitles to Gaming Replays in an Always-On YouTube Live Stream

To add subtitles to a gaming replay, caption the saved stream archive separately in YouTube Studio: open the video’s Subtitles section, then create captions in the editor or upload a timed-text file such as SRT. If viewers need captions while the broadcast is still live, use YouTube’s live-caption workflow instead; live captions do not automatically persist on the replay.

Replay subtitles and live captions are separate

A subtitle track on the saved replay helps viewers who watch after the broadcast. Live captions serve viewers during the broadcast. YouTube treats these as distinct workflows: after a live stream ends, live automatic captions do not remain on the video. YouTube generates captions for the video-on-demand (VOD) separately, and those may differ from the live captions. Add or review captions on the archive if you need a dependable subtitle track for later viewing.

Captions during the broadcast YouTube live automatic captions or a supported professional caption feed Automatic live captions have language, latency, and availability limits. A live caption track does not become the replay’s caption track.

Add subtitles to the saved gaming replay

  1. Find the archive. In YouTube Studio, locate the stream recording you want to caption. If the broadcast was longer than 12 hours, YouTube says it may not have captured the stream at all; check that an archive exists before preparing subtitles.
  2. Open its subtitle controls. Select the video and open Subtitles. Use the available controls to create, upload, edit, or review captions for that video.
  3. Choose an editing method. You can add captions in YouTube’s editor or upload a supported timed-text file. YouTube identifies basic UTF-8 SRT as a supported basic format. A caption file includes both text and timing codes, so check the current Studio uploader for supported formats and requirements before exporting.
  4. Check the transcript carefully. Correct player names, game terminology, item names, abbreviations, and any speech the automatic captions misheard. Pay special attention to overlapping team chat, quiet speech, long silences, and noisy game audio.
  5. Preview the result. Watch sections near the beginning, middle, and end of the replay. Confirm that lines appear at the right time, remain readable, and are available on the watch page and on common screen sizes.

Show captions while the stream is live

YouTube automatic live captions

YouTube documents automatic live captions as English-only and available to some English channels as a rollout. They are enabled for an individual live stream, not once for the whole channel, and require normal latency. Low or ultra-low latency can prevent them from appearing. YouTube also identifies poor audio quality, unsupported language, and overlapping speakers as reasons captions may fail or be delayed. Check the stream’s live setup for the caption option and verify availability for your channel before relying on it.

Even when live automatic captions work, they do not remain on the archive. YouTube Help states: “After the live stream ends, live automatic captions won’t remain on the video.” The VOD receives separately generated captions, so review or add the replay subtitles through Studio after the stream.

Professional live-caption feed

For a live caption track beyond the automatic-caption workflow, YouTube documents embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions in the encoder and supported caption software sending captions through YouTube’s caption ingestion connection. In the event workflow, enable Closed captions, copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL, and give it to the captioning service. YouTube says one stream entry point accepts one caption feed.

YouTube lists Total Eclipse (Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or later), Case CATalyst (BCS 14.52 or later), CaptionMaker (5.22 or later), and StreamText.Net as supported options. These are specialist live-caption routes, not requirements for adding subtitles to an archived replay. Confirm current compatibility and service details with the vendor before choosing one.

Plan archives for an always-on channel

A 24/7 stream creates a practical problem: YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. If you need a captionable replay, preserve the source recording and plan broadcasts so the segment you want to caption is available as an archive.

DVR is different from a replay caption track. It lets viewers pause or rewind during a live broadcast, but YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable when a stream exceeds 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to a point before that stream began. DVR is not a durable substitute for captions on a saved video.

Gameplay is a common use for YouTube’s encoder workflow, and YouTube recommends previewing the stream and monitoring the integrity of local recordings. You do not need a special capture card or hardware encoder just to add subtitles to a replay; the caption work happens in Studio or in a timed-text file.

Troubleshoot missing, inaccurate, or out-of-sync captions

  • No replay to caption: Check whether the archive exists in Studio. A stream over 12 hours may not be captured; retain a local recording and organize broadcasts into captionable segments.
  • No live automatic captions: Confirm the feature is available to your channel, the stream is in English, and latency is set to normal. Check for noisy or low-quality audio and overlapping speakers.
  • Live captions disappear after ending: This is expected. Add or review captions on the VOD separately in Studio.
  • Uploaded file is rejected: Confirm that the file format is currently supported by Studio. YouTube identifies basic UTF-8 SRT as a basic supported format; verify encoding and timing codes in the file.
  • Captions are inaccurate: Edit the transcript, particularly game-specific vocabulary, player names, and overlapping dialogue. Automatic recognition can misrepresent speech.
  • Captions are out of sync: Review the file’s timing codes and check several points across the video after upload. Correct the timing in the caption editor or revise and re-upload the timed-text file.
  • Professional captions do not arrive: Check that the caption service has the correct signed ingestion URL and that the stream entry point is not already receiving another caption feed.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep pre-recorded gaming videos looping on YouTube Live, StreamNeo can run the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not caption them, so use YouTube Studio to add subtitles to the archive. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
