First identify which “Astra” you mean. Astra for Fire TV is a Jellyfin playback app: it can show supported subtitle tracks while you watch, but that is different from adding captions to a prerecorded video that is being broadcast as live. Cesbo Astra manages broadcast streams, but its stream overview does not document authoring or adding new timed subtitle cues. The steps below cover Astra Fire TV playback and the separate, documented YouTube Studio workflow; they do not assume captions pass through to a separate live broadcast.
Choose the workflow that matches your video
- Watching a video in Astra for Fire TV: select an existing subtitle track in the player or set a preferred language in playback settings. This is playback, not caption creation.
- Adding captions to an uploaded YouTube video: use YouTube Studio to upload, auto-sync, or manually enter a caption track.
- Broadcasting a prerecorded video as live: do not assume either workflow sends captions along with the separately routed live video. Confirm that your encoder or service accepts the caption format and that the viewing platform preserves the track.
- Using Cesbo Astra: its documented overview covers stream configuration and processing, including filtering subtitles out; it does not provide a new-subtitle authoring procedure.
Show an existing subtitle track in Astra for Fire TV
Astra’s help is for version 1.4.0 on Vega OS 1.2 or later. These instructions apply when the video is in a Jellyfin library and already has a subtitle track.

- Check the media: confirm the source file or Jellyfin item has the subtitle track you want. If there is no track, Astra cannot create one during playback.
- Allow subtitles in Astra: open Settings > Playback and make sure Subtitle mode is not set to All subtitles off.
- Select the track: start playback and choose the desired subtitle track in the player. Alternatively, set your preferred subtitle language in Playback settings.
- Check the track’s playback behavior: Astra’s player indicates whether selecting a track is instant or causes a reload. Switching between supported text tracks is instant; some unsupported formats require server-side processing.
Formats Astra says it can render
Astra 1.4.0 renders ordinary text subtitles itself, including SRT, WebVTT, and text subtitles stored in MP4 files. Its help says PGS, VOBSUB, and heavily styled ASS/SSA are not rendered by the device. For those formats, the server must burn subtitles into the video image, rebuilding the stream. Refer to Astra’s help for the app’s format and playback details.

YouTube’s documented caption workflow applies to an uploaded video. It does not establish that a caption track will automatically accompany the same media when it is separately routed through a live broadcast.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Open YouTube Studio’s subtitle instructions, select the video, and choose Subtitles.
- Add the caption language.
- Choose Add, then upload a caption file, auto-sync a transcript, or type captions manually.
- Check the resulting captions against the video for wording and timing before relying on them.
A timed caption file pairs text with display timestamps. A caption track attached to an uploaded video and a subtitle track embedded in media are not interchangeable assumptions: verify what your live encoder accepts and what the destination player delivers.
For a prerecorded video broadcast as live, verify the caption path first
Before preparing cues or changing an Astra stream, identify the exact Astra product, source container, output protocol, and destination player. Then confirm whether captions must remain selectable or can be part of the picture, and whether the ingest workflow accepts the format you have. The Cesbo overview does not establish how to author new cues; the Astra Fire TV help concerns local Jellyfin playback. Neither is evidence that a separate live output will carry YouTube Studio captions.

Selectable track or text burned into the picture?
- Selectable captions: viewers can turn them on or off and may choose another language, but only if the encoder, stream path, and player preserve the caption track.
- Burned-in captions: text is visible as part of the video image, but viewers cannot switch it off or choose another language. The burn-in requires processing the picture.
Check synchronization, language, styling and position, and whether processing rebuilds or transcodes the video. Do not follow an unverified product-specific command or setting: the exact ingest procedure depends on the Astra product and output path.

Allow production lead time
In a submission to Australia’s communications regulator, the Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association (ASTRA) said caption creation generally takes approximately three times the program duration; transfer and internal preparation can add time. This is ASTRA’s stated general estimate, not a guaranteed turnaround for every provider or production. The document’s publication year is not established here. Read the ASTRA submission.
