To show subtitles during a 24/7 YouTube live stream, send live captions to YouTube either embedded in the video as EIA-608/CEA-708 or through supported captioning software using YouTube’s caption ingestion URL. Turning on a caption option alone—or uploading an SRT file to a replay—does not create a live caption feed.
Choose a live caption method
YouTube documents two routes. Pick the one your production setup can maintain continuously:
| Route | What sends captions | Best fit | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 | Your encoder or production chain embeds captions in the video signal. | A setup that can generate compatible embedded captions. | Configure the caption source in both YouTube Live Control Room and the encoder. YouTube currently supports one caption track for this setup, although the 608/708 standard supports up to four language tracks. |
| HTTP POST caption delivery | Supported caption software or a captioner sends a separate feed to YouTube’s caption ingestion URL. | A production using compatible captioning software or a professional captioner. | YouTube’s documented event workflow requires a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay and allows one caption feed per stream entry point. |
For either method, check that captions arrive in the live player and plan how the feed will resume after a stream restart. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring audio and video quality during encoder streams; caption continuity also needs operational monitoring.
Set up embedded 608/708 captions
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and open its setup or settings area.
- Turn on closed captions and select Embedded 608/708 as the caption source.
- Configure your encoder or production chain to generate compatible EIA-608/CEA-708 captions. Depending on the setup, captions may be read from a supported file format or generated in real time; confirm the exact encoder’s capabilities.
- Save the settings, start the stream, and check that captions appear in the live player. Do not treat a saved setting as proof that caption data is reaching YouTube.
Set up captions sent through software
- In the stream setup in YouTube Live Control Room, turn on closed captions and select the option for captions delivered through supported software, if available for that stream.
- Get the caption ingestion URL provided for the stream and give it to the captioning software or captioner responsible for sending the live feed.
- Configure the documented event workflow with a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. Confirm that the delay and caption timing work for your stream.
- Start the stream and verify captions in the live player. Only one caption feed is allowed per stream entry point, so coordinate who or what is sending it.
YouTube’s live caption requirements page names Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as supported software. It also lists version requirements for some products. Check the current YouTube help page and the vendor’s support information for applicable versions and installation steps before relying on a particular setup.

What automatic live captions do—and do not do
YouTube’s documented automatic live caption rollout is English-only and applies to qualifying streams with normal latency when professional captions are unavailable. Eligibility and controls can change, so check the current Live Control Room settings. Automatic captions are not a dependable substitute for a continuously managed caption feed when language, accuracy, or uninterrupted availability matters.
Live automatic captions do not remain on the archived video. YouTube generates new captions through its video-on-demand (VOD) process after the stream, and those captions may differ from what viewers saw live. For a replay, inspect the VOD subtitle track and edit it in YouTube Studio if needed.

Keep captions and replays continuous across a 24/7 broadcast
A 24/7 stream is an operating workflow, not just a caption setting. Decide who monitors the caption feed, how it is restored after a disconnect or restart, and how captions will be checked on each replay. YouTube’s instructions allow one caption feed per stream entry point, so a failover plan should not result in multiple competing feeds.
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an entire 24-hour broadcast will become one automatic archive; plan separately for stream sessions and replay captions. YouTube describes encoder streaming as an option for advanced productions and uses a stream URL and stream key. Its current encoder help page identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming prerecorded videos, but that alone does not establish that Gyre provides or supports captions.

Why an uploaded subtitle file is not a live caption feed
YouTube handles live captions and subtitles for an already-recorded video as separate workflows. Uploading an SRT file to a prerecorded video does not send captions to an ongoing live stream. If you need captions during the broadcast, configure one of the live routes above; if you need subtitles on the replay, review and edit the VOD subtitle track separately in YouTube Studio.
Troubleshoot missing or unreliable captions
- The caption option is on, but viewers see no captions: Check that the encoder is actually embedding 608/708 data or that captioning software is sending data to the stream’s ingestion URL. Verify in the live player.
- The stream uses the wrong caption source: Match the source selected in Live Control Room to the production method. Embedded captions need compatible encoder output; software delivery needs a live feed to the caption ingestion URL.
- Captions disappear after a restart: Check that the caption generator or software reconnects and resumes sending data. Monitor the feed as part of stream recovery, not only at initial setup.
- Captions are mistimed: For the documented software workflow, confirm the required 30- or 60-second broadcast delay and check timing in the live player.
- A second caption system cannot connect: YouTube allows one caption feed per stream entry point. Identify the active sender and avoid running competing feeds.
- Captions appear live but not on the replay: Live automatic captions do not carry over. Inspect the separately generated VOD captions in YouTube Studio and edit them if needed.
- The full day is missing from the archive: YouTube’s encoder guide states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Plan session length and replay handling rather than expecting one 24-hour automatic archive.
