The AI assistant can gather preferences and suggest a cart, but your server must rebuild that cart from trusted product IDs, check current prices and availability, and create the payment session. Confirm payment through verified Stripe webhooks—not from the shopper’s browser redirect.
That setup is different from checkout that stays inside an AI platform such as ChatGPT. The platform flow has its own protocol, access requirements, and handoffs.

Choose where checkout should appear
“Without leaving your site” can mean two different things. Decide which experience you want before designing the integration:

Stripe’s hosted Checkout page is a redirect-based experience. Embedded Checkout is the documented choice when the payment UI should appear on your merchant-owned page. Stripe also describes Delegated Checkout for purchases inside AI products, using a scoped, time-limited payment credential; the seller remains responsible for fulfillment policy, tax, and refunds. For ChatGPT specifically, OpenAI’s specification describes a flow in which merchant endpoints create, update, and complete checkout sessions, while the merchant keeps its existing payment processor. OpenAI says Instant Checkout is limited to approved partners, so confirm eligibility before building around it. OpenAI Agentic Checkout Spec
Keep the assistant out of the pricing authority
Treat the assistant’s output as a request, not an order or trusted total. It can send product identifiers, selected options, and quantities to a merchant endpoint. Your server should look up the current catalog records, confirm that items are available, and calculate prices and any applicable shipping or tax. Before creating a Checkout Session, show the shopper the server-calculated items and final order details. This gives the shopper a chance to catch an incorrect product, option, quantity, or delivery choice before payment begins.
Build the embedded Checkout flow
- Collect the proposed cart. Have the assistant submit product IDs, quantities, and any supported options to your backend. Do not accept an assistant-generated total as authoritative.
- Validate and persist the order. Reconstruct the cart from your catalog, check availability, calculate the current order, and save an internal order or cart reference. Stripe supports
client_reference_idfor a customer or cart reference and Session metadata for associating the Stripe transaction with your own records. Stripe Checkout Sessions API - Create a Checkout Session on your server. Use the Session mode that matches the transaction:

Stripe describes a Checkout Session as the customer’s session while paying for one-time purchases or subscriptions through Checkout or Payment Links. Confirm payment and fulfill from webhooks
A browser returning to a success page is not proof that an order has been paid. Use Stripe’s webhook events to update the order and trigger fulfillment, including the relevant Checkout Session completion and asynchronous payment success or failure events. Stripe: Fulfill orders

- Return a 2xx response promptly, and make your order handling safe to retry so duplicate event delivery does not duplicate fulfillment.
- Account for asynchronous payment outcomes; a completed checkout flow in the browser does not necessarily mean the payment has settled.
Test the full state flow in Stripe’s sandbox or with CLI test events before going live. Exercise successful payment, authentication, declines, delayed payment outcomes, retries, and duplicate event handling in your own order logic. Stripe: Fulfill orders

If the shopper must remain in ChatGPT or another AI product rather than on your own website, embedded Checkout on your site does not solve that handoff. Evaluate Stripe Delegated Checkout or the platform’s commerce protocol instead. Stripe’s guide describes seller responsibilities that include order handling, tax, fulfillment, and refunds. OpenAI’s checkout specification calls for authenticated requests, signature verification, idempotency, input validation, safe retries, and conformance checks; it also describes order lifecycle notifications by webhook.
