In OBS, add a local audio file as a Media Source in the scene where you want the cue, choose whether it should restart or loop, then test the mix before going live. The cue’s license matters too: YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches, so a track described as “free” or “royalty-free” is not automatically cleared.
Choose a cue and confirm you can use it
A stinger is a short sound or musical cue used for an intro, transition, scene change, or brand signature. A jingle is usually a short musical identity. Either can be played from a file in OBS, but the file must be permitted for the live broadcast and any replay you keep.

If a third-party rights holder licensed the track to you, ask them to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a stream may still be interrupted when a channel is not allowlisted, even if the creator has a license. An archived live video can also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. Add a one-shot sting in OBS
- Get the audio file ready. Download the chosen cue or export your original audio locally. OBS’s documented Media Source formats include MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. OBS Media Sources documentation
- Choose the scene. In OBS, select the scene in which the sting should be available—for example, your opening or transition scene.
- Add the source. In the Sources panel, use the add control and choose Media Source. Select the local audio file in the source settings. OBS describes Media Source as a way to add media files to scenes.
- Set its playback behavior. For a one-shot cue, leave looping off. Enable Restart playback when source becomes active if you want it to start from the beginning whenever that source becomes active. Enable looping only for audio intended to continue repeating; OBS documents both controls.
- Check the mix. Watch the OBS audio mixer while previewing or recording. Adjust the cue so it is audible without obscuring speech or other program audio. There is no single suitable level for every microphone, track, or show, so judge it in your actual mix.
- Test before the broadcast. Make a short recording or test the scene in a private or unlisted stream. Listen for clipping, abrupt starts or endings, and whether the cue overlaps speech. Confirm that the right scene and source behavior are in place before relying on it live.
Play a cue when you switch scenes
Put the Media Source in the scene where the cue should be available and enable Restart playback when source becomes active. When that scene becomes active, the source can restart from the beginning. Test the transition in a recording: if the source remains active across your particular scene changes, its behavior may not match the cue timing you want. Adjust the scene or source arrangement and test again rather than assuming every transition triggers a restart.

For a sequence of multiple audio files, OBS also documents a VLC Video source that supports playlists; VLC must be installed. That is a different setup from a single Media Source and is useful when you want to manage several files together. Consult the OBS Media Sources documentation for the source controls and current details.
Prevent avoidable audio and copyright problems
- Do not treat a label as permission. YouTube cautions that even music labeled “free” online may be flagged. Check the license terms for the precise uses you need, including live transmission and a retained replay. YouTube’s safe-music guidance
- Credit when required. If you use a Creative Commons track from YouTube’s Audio Library, put its required attribution in the video description. The Audio Library page explains the download and attribution details. YouTube Audio Library guidance
- Arrange allowlisting for licensed third-party tracks. A license does not necessarily prevent an automated live interruption; ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel through Content ID. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance
- Plan for the replay. If you archive the live broadcast, the recording can receive a Content ID claim after the stream ends. Make sure the license covers that use as well.
- Listen to the transition, not just the file. A cue that sounds fine alone can mask a host or cut off awkwardly in the program mix. Check the actual scene change and surrounding speech in a test recording.

Can I use an MP3 for an OBS stinger?
Yes. OBS Media Source documentation lists MP3 among its supported formats, along with AAC, OGG, and WAV.

No. Attribution depends on the track’s license; Creative Commons Audio Library tracks require the specified artist credit in the description.
