Adding a Steam Workshop item to a Killing Floor 2 dedicated server takes three separate jobs: install or update the server with SteamCMD, enable the Workshop download manager and subscribe to the item’s numeric ID, then configure any map or mutator-specific settings. A subscription downloads files; it does not automatically place a custom map in rotation or activate a mutator.
For a hosted Killing Floor 2 server instead of a self-managed installation, Godlike.Host Killing Floor 2 servers use a Pterodactyl-based game panel for server management. What you need before configuring Workshop content
Prepare the dedicated server installation, an account that can run and edit its files, and the Workshop item you intend to use. The server can run on Windows or Linux. The file names below use the Windows layout; on Linux, edit the corresponding server engine and game INI files in that installation.
- A current dedicated-server install: SteamCMD is the command-line utility used to download and update dedicated servers. Killing Floor 2 uses application ID
232130for its dedicated server. - Administrative file access: you must be able to stop the server and edit files under
KFGameConfig. - The Workshop item ID: this is the numeric value in the item’s Workshop URL, not the item title and not the entire URL.
- A maintenance window: the server must be started long enough to download each subscribed item before you stop it or launch a live rotation.
Keep a backup of the INI files before changing them. Make edits while the server is stopped, and use one line per Workshop item so you can identify and remove subscriptions later.

Install or update the dedicated server with SteamCMD
If the server is not installed yet, or you need to bring it up to date, use SteamCMD. The following Windows command is the procedure documented for a standalone Killing Floor 2 server:
steamcmd.exe force_install_dir C:KF2Server login anonymous app_update 232130 validate quitforce_install_dir selects the server directory. login anonymous logs in with the anonymous account supported by the dedicated-server depot. app_update 232130 downloads or updates the Killing Floor 2 server, while validate checks the downloaded files before SteamCMD exits with quit.
- Place SteamCMD where you want to manage the installation and open a command prompt with permission to write to the target directory.
- Run the command, changing
C:KF2Serveronly if you deliberately chose another install path. - Wait for SteamCMD to finish downloading and validating. Do not copy Workshop files into the server directory manually as a substitute for the subscription configuration.
- Launch the dedicated server once with no Workshop changes. This first run creates the normal configuration files, including the engine and game INIs that you will edit next.
- Stop the server cleanly before opening those files in a text editor.
Updating the base server and downloading Workshop items are related but separate operations: SteamCMD maintains application 232130, while the game’s Workshop subsystem retrieves subscribed content when the server starts.

Open KFGameConfigPCServer-KFEngine.ini on Windows. Find the [IpDrv.TcpNetDriver] section. Add this line there:
DownloadManagers=OnlineSubsystemSteamworks.SteamWorkshopDownloadIf the section already contains several DownloadManagers entries, place the Steam Workshop entry first. This setting is the server-side mechanism that obtains Workshop files and makes them available for clients who join. A correct subscription without this download-manager line can leave the item absent from the server.

On Linux, edit the equivalent server engine INI in the Linux installation and make the same section and ordering change. Preserve the existing INI syntax: the section header uses square brackets, and each setting occupies its own line.
Add Workshop subscriptions by numeric ID
Workshop subscriptions belong in the Workshop subsystem section of the game configuration. In KFGameConfigPCServer-KFEngine.ini, find or create:

ServerSubscribedWorkshopItems=<numeric Workshop ID>For example, if an item URL ends with a numeric ID, copy only that number after the equals sign. Do not paste the URL, add quotation marks, or use the item’s display name. Multiple subscriptions are separate lines:
[OnlineSubsystemSteamworks.KFWorkshopSteamworks]
ServerSubscribedWorkshopItems=123456789
ServerSubscribedWorkshopItems=987654321The numbers above are formatting examples, not real item recommendations; replace them with the IDs of the items you have selected.
- Open the Workshop page for the mod, map, or mutator.
- Copy the numeric portion of the item URL.
- Add a
ServerSubscribedWorkshopItems=line under the exact Workshop subsystem header. - Save the file without changing the section name or the capitalization of the key.
- Start the server and leave it running until the item has finished downloading.
- Stop and restart only after the initial download is complete, then test the content from a client.
Do not stop immediately after seeing the server process start. The first launch is when the server retrieves the subscription, so an interrupted launch can produce an apparently valid configuration with incomplete files.

Make a downloaded custom map playable
A custom map needs more than a subscription. Killing Floor 2 also needs a map summary and a map-cycle entry that point to the downloaded map. The map’s .kfm file extension is not used in the MapName value.

Create the map summary
Edit KFGameConfigPCServer-KFGame.ini. Add a map-summary section named for the map, following the game’s existing summary format. A typical section header looks like this:
[KF-CustomMap KFMapSummary]Use the base map name in the section and in the MapName value, without appending .kfm. Copy the surrounding formatting and any required summary fields from an existing map entry rather than inventing a different section layout.
Add the map to the cycle
In the same game configuration, add the base map name to the server’s map-cycle setting. Keep the exact delimiter and ordering already used by your installation, and write the name without the .kfm extension. A map that downloads successfully but is absent from the cycle will not appear as a normal rotation choice.
Test the complete path
- Confirm the Workshop ID is present under
[OnlineSubsystemSteamworks.KFWorkshopSteamworks]. - Start the server and wait for the Workshop download to finish.
- Verify that the map summary and map-cycle entries use the same base name as the downloaded map.
- Restart the server, select the map through the normal map-change mechanism, and join from a client.
These are distinct failure points: the subscription controls acquisition, the summary supplies map metadata, and the cycle controls whether the server offers the map.

Enable a Workshop mutator at server startup
Mutators generally require instructions specific to that item. A subscription alone does not activate one. The documented Server Extension example illustrates the pattern: add a startup parameter, allow the mod to generate its configuration files, then edit those files before the production restart.
Add the startup parameter
Append the mutator parameter to the server launch command or shortcut used by your installation:
?Mutator=ServerExtMut.ServerExtMutUse the exact class string supplied by the mutator author. Do not substitute a Workshop title or ID for the class name; the startup parameter tells the game which mutator class to load.
Generate and configure the extension files
For the Server Extension example, the first launch creates or exposes these files:
KFServerExtMut.iniKFxMapVote.iniKFServerExt.ini
- Subscribe to the mutator’s Workshop ID and confirm the download manager is enabled.
- Start the server once with
?Mutator=ServerExtMut.ServerExtMut. - Wait for the server to finish loading and generating its settings, then stop it.
- Open the generated INI files and configure the options documented for that mutator.
- Start the server again and test the mutator with an administrator account and a regular client.
The Server Extension listing describes its purpose as replacing the standard perk system with server-side perk progression and RPG-style stats and traits. That description does not make it a universal template: other mutators can use different class names, files, or required parameters.
Account for first-run initialization issues
The Server Extension instructions warn about an UnrealScript default-value initialization bug. It can result in random settings or missing configuration files on first run. If the item’s documentation calls for explicit initialization of version or configuration values, apply that workaround before relying on the generated settings. Otherwise, a successful process launch may still leave the mutator incorrectly configured.

Conflicting copies are a common reason a mutator appears to load but behaves like an older release. Stop the server before removing anything and retain a backup of custom settings.

KFGameCacheClear the old Workshop and cache content as recommended by the mutator’s instructions, then start the server and allow it to download a single current copy. Do not delete unrelated server data indiscriminately: identify the item’s directory and preserve any configuration files you need to restore. After cleanup, check that only one version of the mutator is subscribed and that no manually copied duplicate remains elsewhere in the installation.
Troubleshoot a missing Workshop mod

Work through the table in order: acquisition problems come before map-cycle or mutator problems. There is no point editing a map summary until the server has actually downloaded the item.
Manual INI editing or a server-management tool?
Manual configuration is the native, transparent approach. KF2ServerTool is an optional convenience application that can browse or accept a Workshop URL, download an item, add the server subscription, create map and map-cycle entries, configure redirects, and manage Windows or Linux installations. It does not replace the need to understand the underlying files when diagnosing a failed deployment.

Choose manual editing when auditability and predictable changes matter, or when you are troubleshooting. Choose a management tool when repeated installations and map administration justify automation, but still validate the native subscription, download-manager, and map-cycle settings it produces.

- Put the Steam Workshop download manager first under
[IpDrv.TcpNetDriver]. - Add the item’s numeric ID under
[OnlineSubsystemSteamworks.KFWorkshopSteamworks]. - Start the server and wait for the download to complete before stopping it.
- For a map, create the matching
KFMapSummarysection and map-cycle entry, using the name without.kfm. - For a mutator, follow its exact startup parameter and first-run configuration instructions.
- After updates, check for duplicate Workshop or cache copies and test from a client before opening the server to players.
This sequence keeps the responsibilities separate: SteamCMD installs the server, the Workshop subsystem downloads content, map configuration exposes maps in rotation, and mutator parameters activate gameplay extensions.
