To make meditation videos change gently in OBS, put the clips in separate scenes, choose Fade in the Scene Transitions dock, and adjust its duration. A VLC playlist can sequence clips, but OBS documents playlist playback and scene transitions as separate controls; do not assume playlist items will crossfade.
Choose the transition that matches your setup

For a straightforward soft switch, use Fade. A stinger is not necessary to create a gentle dissolve.

Set up a Fade between meditation videos
- Create a scene for each clip or segment you want to switch between. In OBS, scenes and their sources make up the stream layout. Name scenes clearly, such as “Breathing” or “Closing,” so you can identify the next one while operating the stream.
- Add each video to its scene. In the Sources dock, use + and choose Media Source. Select the local file in its properties. OBS documents support for formats including
.mp4,.ts,.mov,.flv,.mkv,.avi,.gif, and.webm. Available formats and interface labels can vary with your operating system and OBS release; consult the OBS Media Sources documentation if a file does not appear or play. - Choose the scene transition. Find the Scene Transitions dock, select Fade, and set its duration. OBS provides Fade and Cut at first launch and lets you change a transition’s duration. Pick a duration by previewing how it feels with your footage; OBS does not publish a meditation-specific setting.
- Decide how each clip should behave. In the Media Source properties, set Loop if that clip should repeat, and Restart playback when source becomes active if it should start from the beginning when you return to its scene. Enable Show nothing when playback ends if you want the source to disappear after it ends rather than hold on its last frame. These are source playback choices, not transition settings.
- Preview the change before going live. Switch between the relevant scenes and check the Fade with your actual clips and scene layout. If you use Studio Mode, you can add Fade as a Quick Transition and give that quick transition its own duration, letting you preview the next scene and trigger the change deliberately. Use a playlist when you need ordered playback
If you want one source to play a sequence of files, OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists, unlike the ordinary Media Source. Install VLC first, then add a VLC Video source and configure the playlist in its properties. OBS describes this as playlist functionality; it does not document playlist-item changes as invoking a scene transition. Set up Fade separately in the Scene Transitions controls if you also need to switch between scenes. See OBS Media Sources.

When to use a stinger instead
Choose a stinger only if you want a designed animation to cover or reveal the new scene, rather than a simple fade. OBS track matte mode uses a mask: black indicates the outgoing scene, white the incoming scene, and gray blends the two. For more reliable synchronization, OBS recommends putting the overlay and matte together in one file; separate files are not guaranteed to decode in lock-step. Follow the setup guidance in OBS Stinger Transitions and preview the result before using it on a live stream.

Common problems and fixes
- A clip changes abruptly. Confirm that Fade is selected in the Scene Transitions dock; a Cut produces an immediate switch. If you are using Studio Mode, check that you trigger the intended Quick Transition.
- The playlist changes clips without a soft transition. A VLC playlist sequences media; it is not the scene-transition control. The documented way to configure a soft scene change is to set Fade in Scene Transitions. The OBS documentation does not establish that playlist items crossfade.
- A clip holds on its last image. Check the Media Source’s Show nothing when playback ends option if you want the source to disappear at the end instead.
- A clip resumes partway through or repeats unexpectedly. Review Restart playback when source becomes active and Loop in that source’s properties; set them according to whether you want a fresh start or repeated playback.
- VLC Video is unavailable or the playlist will not work. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source. If a media file still fails, check the file format and your OBS and operating-system version against OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
