Use FFmpeg’s silencedetect filter to identify quiet audio, but use a separate playlist controller or scheduler to decide when to open the next episode. The filter reports silence; it does not switch files or manage a YouTube broadcast. The reliable workflow is to test the detection threshold on your recordings, define the episode-transition rule, then send a continuous, correctly configured stream to YouTube Live.

What silence detection does—and does not do

FFmpeg’s silencedetect filter reports when audio stays at or below a chosen volume threshold for at least a chosen duration. It logs silence start, silence end, and duration metadata. Its documented defaults are a noise threshold of -60 dB and a minimum duration of 2 seconds; those defaults are not universal recommendations. Quiet speech, room tone, music beds, and recording noise can all change what the filter classifies as silence. FFmpeg Filters Documentation

The filter is a detector, not an episode scheduler. It does not choose or open the next file, create a video track, or guarantee a gapless transition. Treat detection, episode sequencing, and encoding to YouTube as separate jobs.

Choose how episodes should advance

Use file boundaries when episodes have known lengths

If you know where each episode ends, make those boundaries the primary schedule. A playlist or controller can advance at the planned endpoint. This is usually more predictable than relying on a quiet moment inside a recording, where a pause in speech could be mistaken for the end of an episode.

Use silence events when gaps should trigger transitions

If the transition should depend on an actual quiet gap, have a controller interpret FFmpeg’s reported events and advance the playlist only when your chosen threshold and minimum duration are met. This requires orchestration outside silencedetect; the filter itself does not issue a “play next file” action.

Decide what listeners hear between episodes

Choose whether the transition should be abrupt, include a fixed amount of silence, or use a short station ID or music bed. Silence detection cannot make that editorial choice. Also decide what should happen after the last episode, if a playlist entry is missing, or if the broadcast reconnects.

Test the detection settings before automating

  1. Pick representative audio. Include quiet speech, pauses, room tone, any music bed, and the between-episode gap. A setting that works for one recording may trigger early or late on another.
  2. Analyze a file without broadcasting. Run FFmpeg with -af silencedetect and direct the output to the null muxer. For example, ffmpeg -i episode.mp3 -af silencedetect=noise=-50dB:d=3 -f null - asks FFmpeg to report audio at or below -50 dB lasting at least 3 seconds; it does not create an output stream or schedule another episode. Choose values for your material rather than copying this example unchanged. See the filter documentation for options and reported metadata.
  3. Inspect the timestamps. Check whether the reported silence starts and ends match the gaps you intend to detect. If speech pauses trigger events, adjust the threshold or duration, or rely on known file boundaries instead.
  4. Connect the detector to sequencing. Have a playlist/controller interpret the event and open the next episode according to your transition rule. Validate missing-file, end-of-playlist, and reconnect behavior before relying on it for a public stream.
  5. Test privately. Send a test with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast, then check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before going public. YouTube recommends testing representative content and monitoring stream health.

The sample command is an analysis pattern, not a complete multi-file scheduler or live-stream command. The right implementation depends on whether episodes are files or separate inputs and on how you provide the video track.

Configure the YouTube Live output

  1. Create or configure the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Get the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings, then enter them in your encoder. YouTube also provides settings that allow the encoder to start or stop the stream. Keep the stream key private because it functions as a credential. See Manage live stream settings.
  2. Choose supported encoding settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed a 4-second interval.
  3. Match bitrate to the actual video mode. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the corresponding row in YouTube’s current encoder settings table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
  4. Set stereo audio appropriately. YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as recommended advanced settings for stereo audio.
  5. Watch the incoming stream. Confirm audio, video, and stream health in Live Control Room. A successful silence event in FFmpeg does not by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Common problems and fixes

  • A transition fires during a speaking pause: The threshold or minimum duration is too permissive for that recording, or the pause is longer than expected. Review logged timestamps on representative material, then adjust the settings or use known file boundaries.
  • The intended gap is not detected: The gap may be above the selected noise threshold or shorter than the minimum duration. Inspect the audio and event log, then tune both values against the actual gap.
  • The detector reports silence but the next episode does not start: Detection and sequencing are separate. Check that a controller is receiving and interpreting the filter event and that the next playlist entry exists.
  • The audio changes but the YouTube stream does not: silencedetect does not supply video or configure the live output. Check the video source, encoder settings, stream URL, and stream key, then verify reception in Live Control Room.
  • The broadcast stops or fails to connect: Check the encoder’s connection and YouTube stream settings, including the URL and key, and review Live Control Room stream health. Test reconnect behavior before depending on unattended operation.

If you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded recordings without keeping a computer or home connection on, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option; it plays uploaded videos rather than detecting silence in a live FFmpeg audio source. Nothing has to stay on at home; any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
