To add a widget, touch and hold an empty area of the Android Home screen, tap Widgets, choose the app, then touch and hold a widget preview and drag it onto a Home-screen panel. To resize it, touch and hold the placed widget and drag the dots that appear on its outline; no dots means that widget or launcher cannot be resized.
Widgets are supplied by individual apps, so their designs, controls, refresh behavior, and compatibility vary by app, Android version, phone manufacturer, and launcher. The Google Search bar has a separate customization screen in the Google app.

What an Android widget is—and why controls differ
A widget is an app-provided component that sits on a Home-screen panel and presents information or controls without requiring you to open the full app. Android Developers describes widgets as movable Home-screen components that can be resized when the implementation supports resizing.

Installing an app does not guarantee a particular widget style. The app decides which widget designs it supplies, how much information each size shows, whether it scrolls, and which controls are available. Your Android release, phone maker, and Home-screen launcher also affect the menus and appearance. A tutorial that matches one phone may therefore use slightly different labels or show different widget choices on another.

Google Android Help currently warns: “Important: Some of these steps only work on Android 14 and up.” On older Android releases or manufacturer launchers, the same capability may use another label, appear in a different menu, or be unavailable.
Before you begin
- Use an Android phone with a Home screen and at least one installed app that provides a widget.
- Know which Home-screen panel should hold the widget. You can move it later, but selecting the panel first reduces rearranging.
- If you need a specific design, open the app’s entry in the widget picker; the available previews are app-specific.
- Expect the exact menu wording and visual style to vary with Android version, manufacturer, and launcher.
How to add a widget from the Home screen
- Open the Home-screen editing menu. Go to a Home-screen panel and touch and hold an empty area until the customization controls appear.
- Open the widget picker. Tap Widgets. Android displays apps that provide one or more widgets.
- Choose the app. Find and tap the app whose widget you want. Its available designs and default sizes appear as previews.
- Pick a design. Touch and hold the desired widget preview. Android shows the available Home-screen panels so you can place it.
- Place it. Drag the preview to the desired location and lift your finger. If the area has enough space, the widget is added there.
Some apps provide a shortcut to the same list: touch and hold the app icon, then tap Widgets. If that option is absent, use the Home-screen method instead.
If the widget will not drop into place
A panel needs an open area large enough for the widget’s current footprint. Move icons or another widget first, choose another panel, or try a smaller design from the same app. The widget’s initial size is determined by the app and launcher; you can attempt resizing after placement if handles are available.

Touch and hold the widget, then drag it to a different open location on the current panel or toward the edge of the screen to move it to another Home-screen panel. Lift your finger when the target location is highlighted. Moving changes only the Home-screen position; it does not alter the app or its data.
If the widget repeatedly returns to its old position, the destination may not have enough room for its current width or height. Make space, select a different panel, or resize it before moving it.

Resize a widget
- Touch and hold the widget already on the Home screen.
- Lift your finger when the editing outline appears.
- Look for dots or handles on the outline’s sides.
- Drag a handle inward or outward to change the width or height.
- Tap outside the widget to save the new dimensions.
The handles are the definitive indication that resizing is supported. If the outline has no dots, that widget or your launcher does not offer user resizing. There is no Android setting that can force handles to appear when the app did not implement resizing.
What changing size does
Resizing changes the space the widget occupies, but the app controls what appears in that space. A larger layout may expose more information or controls, while a smaller layout may show only a glanceable summary. Android 12 introduced redesigned Material You widgets; Google noted that larger sizes can expose more functionality.

The launcher may snap the outline to a grid or stop at the app’s minimum and maximum sizes. If the final size is not exactly where you released the handle, that snapping is normal.
Customize the Google Search bar widget
The Google Search bar has controls separate from the general widget picker. First add the Search widget to the Home screen. Then:
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Settings > Search widget > Customize widget.
- Use the controls shown there to change the Search bar’s available appearance options, then leave the screen when finished.
Android.com notes that the Search bar’s look can differ between Android versions and devices. If the listed options do not match your phone, check that you are editing the Google Search widget rather than a search field supplied by another app or launcher.

Customize widgets from other apps
Open the widget picker and tap an app’s name to see every design it supplies. One app may offer several layouts—for example, a compact glance view and a larger panel with more information—while another may provide only one fixed design.
Customization can happen in three places:
- Widget dimensions: use the Home-screen resize handles when the widget exposes them.
- Widget controls: tap or swipe the widget if its design includes buttons, scrolling, or other interactions. The available interactions are defined by the app.
- App settings: open the full app when the widget needs account, content, display, or refresh choices that are not exposed on the Home screen.
Do not assume that two widgets from the same app behave alike. Each design can have its own minimum size, interaction depth, and visual options.
Android 12 appearance and dynamic color
Android 12 brought Material You widget redesigns. Google wrote on October 28, 2021, that widgets can be resized and that larger sizes can reveal more functionality. On select Android 12 devices, including Pixel 3 or later, widgets can dynamically change color as they move over the chosen wallpaper.
Dynamic color is not a universal promise for every Android 12 phone or every widget. Whether it appears depends on the device, launcher, Android build, and the widget’s implementation. A widget that keeps a fixed color is not necessarily malfunctioning.
Remove a widget without deleting its app
Touch and hold the widget, then drag it to Remove. This removes only the Home-screen item. The app remains installed, along with its data and any other shortcuts.

Uninstall is a different action: it removes the app from the device. Choose Remove when you only want to clear Home-screen space; choose Uninstall only when you intend to delete the app itself.
Choosing a useful widget size
Use the following decision guide rather than assuming the largest layout is best. Exact dimensions and features are app-specific.
| Widget choice | Information density | Interaction depth | Resize and visual customization | Good fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact glance layout | Small summary visible at a glance | Usually tap-oriented; app-dependent | May be fixed or offer limited handles | A busy panel where quick status matters more than detail |
| Medium layout | More fields or entries without dominating the panel | May support scrolling or multiple controls, depending on the app | Often offers more useful size choices when supported | Regularly checking a small set of information |
| Large dashboard layout | Highest information density supplied by that design | Can expose additional controls or content; implementation varies | May reveal more functionality, especially on Android 12-style widgets | A primary panel where the widget replaces frequent app launches |
| Search bar layout | A single entry point rather than a data dashboard | Tap to search and use the controls provided by Google | Uses the Google app’s Search widget customization screen; appearance varies by device | Keeping web and device search immediately accessible |
Also consider refresh behavior. The app determines how often its widget updates and whether it needs network or other data access. A larger or more interactive design may be more useful but can update differently from a compact one. Check the app’s own settings and documentation when battery or data usage is a deciding factor; Android does not impose one refresh policy on every widget.

The Widgets option is missing
Touch and hold a genuinely empty area of the Home screen rather than an icon or existing widget. If the menu still lacks Widgets, your launcher may use a different editing path or restrict widget management. Touch and hold an app icon to see whether it offers a Widgets shortcut. Menu labels can also differ on Android versions older than 14.

Only apps that provide widgets appear there. Installing an app does not guarantee that it includes one. Confirm that you are looking at the app’s entry, and check whether the developer supplies a widget in that version. If no entry exists, Android has no widget from that app to place.

No resize dots appear
After touching and holding the placed widget, an outline without dots means resizing is unsupported by that widget or launcher. Try another design from the same app, because one layout may be resizable while another is fixed. If every design lacks handles, the app has not exposed user resizing on your setup.
The widget looks different from instructions or screenshots
Appearance depends on Android version, phone manufacturer, launcher, app version, and—in Android 12—whether the device and widget support Material You behavior. The Google Search bar is specifically documented as varying between devices and Android releases.
The widget disappeared after changing its size
Check the other Home-screen panels and make sure the widget was not moved during editing. If it is gone, add it again from Home screen > touch and hold empty space > Widgets. Removing a widget does not uninstall its app, so the app should remain available unless it was separately uninstalled.
The widget cannot be moved to the desired panel
Clear enough space on the destination panel for the widget’s current footprint. Resize it first if handles are available, or choose a smaller design. A launcher may also restrict placement on a particular panel, in which case another panel is the practical workaround.
How Android version and launcher affect the experience
There is no single widget interface shared identically by every Android phone. Android’s core behavior—adding from a widget picker, moving items, and showing resize handles when supported—can be presented through different menus. Manufacturer launchers may rename actions, change the grid, or offer additional editing controls.
Use the labels visible on your own device as the authority. When a guide says a step works only on Android 14 and up, treat that as a version boundary rather than evidence that your phone is defective. On older releases, look for an equivalent Home-screen edit menu or consult the phone maker’s current support instructions.
Quick Recap
A practical workflow for a tidy Home screen
- Decide whether you need a glance, a dashboard, or a search entry point.
- Open the widget picker and inspect every design offered by the relevant app.
- Place the smallest design that contains the information you actually need.
- Resize only when handles appear, increasing the footprint if the larger layout exposes useful content or controls.
- Move the widget to the panel where you naturally look for that information.
- Remove unused widgets with Remove rather than uninstalling the app.
- For the Google Search bar, use the Google app’s dedicated customization path instead of expecting all appearance controls in the launcher.
