Windows 11 lets you manage widgets from three different places: the main Widgets board, the Widgets button on the taskbar, and the lock screen. Open the board with Windows key + W, use + to add an available widget, use More options > Remove widget to remove a card, and drag a widget’s header to change its position. Hiding the taskbar button does not disable the board, and lock-screen widgets use a separate Settings page.
Understand which Windows 11 widget surface you are changing
“Widgets” in Windows 11 can mean more than one interface. Choosing the wrong control is the most common reason a change appears not to work.

- Widgets board: The dashboard that opens from the taskbar or with Windows key + W. Add, remove, and reorder dashboard cards here.
- Taskbar entry: The button or weather area that opens the board. Its visibility is controlled in Taskbar settings; hiding it does not remove the board.
- Lock-screen widgets: A separate, compact surface managed under Personalization settings. Its list order and available controls are independent of the main board.
Microsoft describes widgets as a quick way to see information or perform simple actions without launching the associated app or website. They are not intended to replace the full applications. The current Microsoft instructions are in Stay up to date with Widgets in Windows. The exact catalog can vary with supported apps and device configuration, so a widget shown in documentation may not be available on every PC.
Before you start
Decide which result you want. If you want to change the information shown in the dashboard, work on a card in the board. If you only want to remove the shortcut from the taskbar, change the Widgets switch in Taskbar settings. If you want information visible before you sign in, use the Lock screen page. These are three separate changes, and none of them requires moving a normal application icon on the taskbar.

Open the Widgets board
You can open the board even when its taskbar entry is hidden.
- Press Windows key + W.
- Alternatively, select the Widgets area on the taskbar.
- On configurations that support it, swipe from the side of the screen to open the board.
If you turned off the taskbar entry and later want it back, you do not need to reset the board. Use the keyboard shortcut first, then change the taskbar setting described below.

If Windows key + W opens the dashboard, a missing taskbar button is a visibility setting rather than proof that Widgets has been removed. If neither route opens a board, check that you are using the Windows key, not a similar application shortcut, and then review the Taskbar settings path.
Add a widget to the Windows 11 board
The plus button adds a card to the board’s available widget layout. It does not install every possible widget automatically; the picker displays widgets supported by apps installed or available for your device.
- Open the board with Windows key + W or from the taskbar.
- Select the + button to open the widget picker.
- Choose an available widget. Windows places the selected card in the board’s widget area.
- Close the picker and confirm that the card appears in the dashboard.
For additional choices, check the Widgets page in Microsoft Store for supported apps. A compatible app may provide its own widget, but availability depends on the app, Windows configuration, and device. Microsoft does not publish one universal catalog that applies to every Windows 11 installation, so an absent item is not necessarily a fault with your board.
What the picker can and cannot do
- The picker lists widgets that Windows currently recognizes as available on that device.
- Adding a widget places its card on the board; it does not promise that every feature of the associated app is available inside the card.
- If a widget requires a supported app, installing or updating that app may be necessary before the widget appears in the picker.
- The Microsoft Store route is for software that supplies widgets, not a separate hardware accessory.
Why two PCs can show different choices
Widget availability is not a fixed, universal list. A supported app, its Windows integration, and the device configuration all influence what appears in the picker. Consequently, following the same steps on two Windows 11 PCs can produce different catalogs without either installation being defective. The reliable test is whether the desired item appears in the picker or is offered through the supported-app listings in Microsoft Store.
Do not confuse finding an app in Microsoft Store with adding its card. Store discovery concerns software that can supply widgets; the actual card is still added from the board’s + picker after Windows recognizes it.
Remove a widget card without uninstalling its app
Removing a card changes the board layout. Microsoft’s instructions do not describe this action as uninstalling, deleting, or disabling the associated application.
- Open the Widgets board.
- Find the card you want to remove.
- Select More options in the card’s upper corner.
- Choose Remove widget.
The card disappears from the dashboard. If you later want it back, open the + picker and select it again when it is available. Removing a card is therefore the appropriate action when you want a less crowded board but still use the underlying app elsewhere.

This distinction matters when troubleshooting. Removing a news, weather, calendar, or other card does not constitute an app-uninstall command. If your goal is to remove software, use the operating system’s separate app-management controls; if your goal is only to stop seeing one card, Remove widget is the narrower and safer change.
Rearrange widgets on the board
Reordering is a drag-and-drop operation within the board’s pinned section. It is separate from moving application icons on the Windows taskbar.
- Open the Widgets board.
- Move the pointer to the widget’s header area rather than its buttons or links.
- Press and hold the header, then drag the card to the desired position.
- Release the pointer when the insertion position is shown.
Use the card header as the grab area. Dragging inside a news link, control, or other interactive content can activate that item instead of moving the card. The documented action changes the order of cards in the pinned section; it does not rearrange taskbar icons or change the order of lock-screen items.
Choosing a useful order
Put the card you check most often near the beginning of the pinned section, then place less frequently used information behind it. If a card contains links or controls near its top edge, begin the drag from the header rather than from the content. A successful move changes the board order; it does not alter the card’s settings, its associated app, or its lock-screen availability.
Hide or show the Widgets button on the taskbar
Use this setting when you want to remove the taskbar entry but keep the board available through the keyboard shortcut.
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar.
- Select Taskbar settings.
- Under Taskbar items, find Widgets.
- Switch Widgets off to hide the taskbar entry, or on to show it again.
Turning this switch off hides only the taskbar access point. Windows key + W remains an access route to the board. This is different from removing every card: the board and its layout still exist, even when its taskbar button is not visible.
If you later turn the switch on, Windows restores the taskbar entry; you do not have to add each card again. Conversely, turning the entry off is not a privacy or data-removal operation. It changes visibility of the shortcut, while the board’s cards remain configured separately.
| Goal | Control to use | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Open the board | Taskbar Widgets entry or Windows key + W | Displays the dashboard |
| Add a board card | + in the board | Adds an available widget |
| Remove one board card | Card More options > Remove widget | Removes that card from the dashboard |
| Change board order | Drag the widget header | Moves the card within the pinned section |
| Hide the taskbar entry | Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, then Taskbar items > Widgets | Hides the button but leaves Windows+W available |
Manage widgets on the Windows 11 lock screen
Lock-screen widgets do not use the board’s plus button or drag-and-drop card layout. Manage them from Windows Settings instead.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Go to Personalization.
- Select Lock screen.
- Use the Widgets list to review the items assigned to the lock screen.
Microsoft documents this workflow separately in Customize the Lock screen in Windows. The list is the source of truth for this surface; changing the main board does not automatically change it.

Remove or customize a lock-screen item
Open an item’s More options menu and choose the removal or customization command offered for that widget. The available commands can differ by widget, so Windows may expose customization for one item and only removal for another.
Add a lock-screen widget
Select Add widget to view the lock-screen catalog. Microsoft currently says that only widgets supporting a small size can be added to this surface. A widget that works on the main board may therefore be unavailable for the lock screen because it does not provide the required small layout.
Changes made here affect the lock screen only. They do not add, remove, or reorder the cards on the main board. If you want the same information in both places, configure the board and the lock screen independently and confirm that the widget supports the lock screen’s small-size requirement.

Fix common widget-management problems
The Widgets button is missing from the taskbar
First press Windows key + W. If the board opens, the feature is available and only the taskbar entry is hidden. To restore it, right-click the taskbar, open Taskbar settings, and turn on Widgets under Taskbar items. Microsoft’s taskbar guidance is also available in Customize the Taskbar in Windows.
The plus button does not show the widget you want
The picker reflects what is available for that device, not a guaranteed global list. Check whether the widget depends on a supported app and whether that app is installed. Microsoft also directs users to discover supported app widgets through the Widgets page in Microsoft Store. Availability can vary by device configuration, and Microsoft’s support page does not provide a single build-by-build catalog.
Do not assume that an item pictured in a guide must be present on your installation. The documented steps are the same, but the available choices can differ. If the associated app is available through Microsoft Store, installing or updating that supported app may change what Windows can offer; the picker remains the place where you add the card.
Dragging a card does not move it
Start the drag from the widget header, not from a link, button, or other interactive area. The documented rearrangement applies to cards in the pinned section of the main board. If you are in Settings > Personalization > Lock screen, use the list there instead: drag an item higher to change its reading order.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Removing a card did not remove the related app
That is expected. Remove widget removes the card from the dashboard. It is not documented as an app-uninstall command. Manage the application separately if your goal is to remove the software itself.
The lock-screen catalog is smaller than the board catalog
Lock-screen support has a size requirement: Microsoft says only widgets that support a small size can currently be added. The two surfaces therefore can legitimately offer different choices.
The interface labels look different
Windows 11 updates and device configuration can change which supported widgets appear and how the taskbar entry is presented. Follow the function rather than assuming every PC has the same catalog. The core controls documented by Microsoft remain the board’s + picker, a card’s More options menu, header dragging for board order, and the separate Lock screen settings page.

I hid Widgets and now cannot find my old cards
Hiding the taskbar entry does not remove the board or its cards. Press Windows key + W to reopen the dashboard. If the board is visible but a card is absent, use the + picker; that is a card-availability issue, not a consequence of hiding the taskbar entry.
A practical workflow for organizing widgets
If you are setting up the board from scratch, work in this order so that each change has a clear purpose:
- Open the board with Windows key + W.
- Remove cards you do not need using each card’s More options > Remove widget command.
- Select + and add only the available cards that provide information or actions you actually check.
- Drag the remaining cards by their headers so the most useful information appears first in the pinned section.
- Decide whether you want a taskbar shortcut. If not, hide Widgets under Taskbar items; the Windows+W shortcut will still work.
- If you also use the lock screen, configure it separately under Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
This sequence keeps three decisions separate: what appears on the board, whether the taskbar exposes the board, and what appears before other items on the lock screen.
For a clean reset of your layout, remove unwanted board cards first, add replacements second, and reorder only after the final set is present. That avoids repeatedly dragging cards that you later remove. Treat the lock-screen list as a separate short list: its small-size requirement means it may not mirror the board even when both surfaces use the same app.
Quick reference: board, taskbar, and lock screen
| Surface | Add | Remove | Reorder or visibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main Widgets board | Select + and choose an available widget | Card More options > Remove widget | Drag the card header within the pinned section |

| Lock screen | Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Add widget | Use the item’s More options menu where supported | Drag an item higher in the Widgets list; only small-size widgets are currently eligible |
Frequently asked questions
How do I add a widget in Windows 11?
Open the Widgets board with Windows key + W, select +, and choose an available widget. The picker shows what that PC supports. Additional supported-app widgets may be discovered through the Widgets page in Microsoft Store.

How do I remove a widget without deleting the app?
On the board card, select More options and then Remove widget. This removes the card from the dashboard; Microsoft does not document it as uninstalling the associated app.
Can I move widgets anywhere I want?
You can change their order within the board’s pinned section by dragging each card’s header. Do not drag from a link or button. Taskbar icons and lock-screen items use different controls.
How do I remove Widgets from my taskbar?
Right-click the taskbar, choose Taskbar settings, and switch Widgets off under Taskbar items. The dashboard remains available with Windows key + W.
Why is a widget missing from the plus menu?
The catalog depends on supported apps, Windows configuration, and the device. Check the supported-app listings in Microsoft Store and remember that Microsoft does not provide one universal catalog for every Windows 11 installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAre board widgets and lock-screen widgets the same list?
No. The board uses its own picker and pinned-card order. Lock-screen widgets are managed at Settings > Personalization > Lock screen, and only widgets that support a small size can currently be added there.
Best Value
How do I change the order of lock-screen widgets?
In the Lock screen settings page, drag an item higher in the Widgets list. That changes the order in which lock-screen information appears; it does not move a card on the main board.
Do I need to buy hardware to manage Windows 11 widgets?
No separate hardware is part of Microsoft’s procedure. The controls are built into Windows. Microsoft Store may list supported software apps that provide widgets, but the board, taskbar, and lock-screen controls themselves are Windows features.
What to remember
- Windows key + W opens the board even when the taskbar entry is hidden.
- The board’s + button adds widgets that are available on that PC; supported-app widgets may be discovered through Microsoft Store.
- More options > Remove widget removes a card from the board, not necessarily the associated app.
- Drag a widget’s header to change its position in the board’s pinned section.
- Taskbar visibility is controlled separately under Taskbar settings > Taskbar items > Widgets.
- Lock-screen widgets use Settings > Personalization > Lock screen, with a separate list and a current small-size requirement.

Why does my friend have a widget that I cannot find?
The picker depends on supported apps, Windows configuration, and device availability. Check the Widgets page in Microsoft Store, but do not expect one universal catalog on every PC.
Can I reorder a lock-screen widget by dragging it on the main board?
No. Open Settings > Personalization > Lock screen and drag the item higher in the Widgets list.
Why is a board widget unavailable on the lock screen?
Microsoft currently limits lock-screen additions to widgets that support a small size. A board card can therefore be ineligible for that surface.

The Bottom Line
Use Windows key + W to open the board, + to add available cards, More options > Remove widget to remove one, and the card header to reorder it. Manage the taskbar shortcut and lock-screen list separately; hiding the shortcut does not disable the board, and lock-screen additions require small-size support.
