Add Schema.org Recipe JSON-LD to every public recipe page, keep it identical to the visible ingredients and directions, and validate it with Google’s Rich Results Test. Put the ingredient lines in recipeIngredient and the ordered method in recipeInstructions, preferably as HowToStep objects. Apple lists Recipe as a supported web schema, but neither Google nor Apple promises a particular card, field order, or placement for every search.
What recipe structured data does
Recipe structured data is machine-readable information that describes a dish on its web page. It uses the Schema.org Recipe type, normally embedded as JSON-LD in a script element. Search systems can use that description to understand the recipe name, finished-dish image, author, dates, timings, yield, ingredients and method without guessing from page layout.

On Google, valid recipe markup can make a page eligible for recipe enhancements in Search and Images. Eligibility is not a ranking promise: a page can pass validation and still show a plain result, or show a different subset of fields, depending on query, device, country, indexing and Google’s presentation decisions. Apple’s App Search Programming Guide also lists Recipe among supported web schemas and says that structured data helps Apple parse content and provide richer search results. Apple’s documentation does not guarantee that every property will appear on every Apple product, device, country or query.

Visitors must be able to read the same ingredients and instructions in the normal HTML. If the JSON-LD says “2 eggs” while the visible recipe says “3 eggs,” the page sends conflicting signals and may lose eligibility or display inaccurate information.

The fields a useful Recipe object needs
The following properties form a practical baseline. Google’s required and recommended fields can vary by feature, so check the current Rich Results Test output for the specific page type you are implementing.
| Property | What to put in it | Implementation detail |
|---|---|---|
@context |
https://schema.org |
Identifies the vocabulary used by the object. |
@type |
Recipe |
Use this type for a recipe page, not a generic article type alone. |
name |
The dish’s page title | Keep spelling and wording consistent with the visible heading. |
image |
One or more URLs for the finished dish | Images must be crawlable, indexable and representative of the completed recipe. |
author |
A Person or Organization object |
Use the name shown on the page. |
datePublished |
Publication date, such as 2026-01-15 |
Use an unambiguous ISO date that matches the page’s published date. |
description |
A short, factual description of the dish | Do not turn it into sales copy or add information absent from the page. |
prepTime, cookTime, totalTime |
Durations in ISO 8601 format | PT15M means 15 minutes; PT1H20M means 1 hour 20 minutes. |
recipeYield |
The stated output, such as 4 servings |
Keep it aligned with serving controls and any per-serving nutrition. |
recipeIngredient |
An array of exact ingredient lines | Include only text necessary to make the dish. |
recipeInstructions |
An ordered array of directions | Prefer HowToStep objects; use HowToSection only for genuine sections. |
Schema.org defines recipeIngredient as an ingredient or ordered list of ingredients and quantities used in the recipe. It defines recipeInstructions as a step or an ordered list containing HowToStep and/or HowToSection items. Google’s examples follow that structure and allow optional step URLs or images when they are useful and accurate.
How to write ingredients that Google can use
Use the actual ingredient text
Each array item should be the same concise line a cook sees in the ingredient list: quantity, unit and ingredient, plus a necessary preparation note. For example, 1 cup flour, 2 eggs and 1 tablespoon olive oil are appropriate. Google’s guidance is explicit: “Include only the ingredient text that is necessary for making the recipe.”
Do not append definitions, product pitches, affiliate language, internal labels or unrelated notes. Text such as “1 cup flour (our premium stone-ground favorite)” does not belong in the ingredient value unless that wording is genuinely necessary to make the dish and is visible as part of the recipe.
Preserve order and variants carefully
Keep the same order as the visible list. If the page has separate components, such as sauce and dough, either present them as visible grouped lists and mirror the groups with a clearly structured implementation, or combine the lines in the exact order a reader encounters them. For a recipe with selectable variants, mark up the currently displayed variant only when the visible ingredients and directions change together. Do not expose every possible substitution in one ingredient array if those alternatives are not shown as part of the recipe a visitor is reading.

Keep quantities synchronized
If a serving-size control changes “2 eggs” to “4 eggs,” the JSON-LD must represent the same state that the page exposes to crawlers and users. A server-rendered page with a fixed yield is easier to keep consistent than a client-only calculator that changes text after load. Whichever architecture you use, verify the rendered HTML and structured data for the canonical serving state.
How to represent directions with HowToStep
Make each step an executable instruction
Use one HowToStep object for each meaningful action or ordered group of actions. The text should tell a cook what to do, including relevant temperatures, times and visual cues. The optional name can be a short label such as “Mix” or “Cook.” Google’s example uses both fields.
Do not insert navigation or promotional labels into instructional text. Avoid values such as “Step 1,” “Directions,” “Click here,” or “Watch the video.” The order of the array already communicates sequence, and the text should contain the cooking action itself. If a video is available, link or describe it in the page’s normal content rather than replacing an instruction with “Watch the video.”
Use HowToSection only when sections are real
A long recipe may have genuinely separate sections, such as “For the filling” and “For the topping.” In that case, a HowToSection can group related HowToStep objects. Do not create sections merely to wrap a short list or to repeat headings that are already visible. Every section and step still needs to correspond to readable page content.
Do not hide material steps
Include all actions needed to produce the dish, not only the steps that fit a short snippet. If resting, chilling, proofing or garnishing is required, it belongs in the visible directions and in the ordered instruction objects. Omitting a material action can make a generated result misleading even when the JSON syntax is valid.

Copy-and-adapt JSON-LD implementation
Place a JSON-LD script in the HTML head or body of the recipe page. The following pattern uses the fields in Google’s official Recipe example and Schema.org definitions; replace every example value with the page’s real content.

JSON requires double quotes around property names and string values, commas between items, and no trailing comma after the last item. Escape quotation marks inside a value and ensure the final document is valid JSON before testing it. If you add optional step images or URLs, use only URLs that resolve to the corresponding step and are also available to crawlers.
Step-by-step setup on a recipe page
- Inventory the visible recipe. Record the page title, finished-dish image URL, author, publication date, description, preparation and cooking times, yield, every ingredient line and every direction in order. Decide where genuine instruction sections begin and end.
- Choose the source of truth. In a hand-authored page, store the recipe data beside the template that prints the visible content. In a CMS, map each structured-data field to the same content fields used by the recipe card. Avoid maintaining a second, independently editable ingredient list.
- Create the
Recipeobject. Add the context, type and identity fields first, then timings, yield, ingredients and instructions. Use ISO 8601 durations and the exact visible wording for ingredients and actions. - Render the JSON-LD. Output it as
<script type="application/ld+json">on the canonical recipe URL. Keep the recipe itself accessible without a login, blocked script, or interaction that prevents normal crawling. - Compare machine and human versions. Check every ingredient, quantity, unit, step, temperature, timing and yield against the rendered page. Remove any field that is no longer shown or accurate rather than leaving stale values in the object.
- Run Google’s Rich Results Test. Test the public URL after deployment, or paste the code during development. Confirm that the JSON parses, the Recipe item is detected and any reported warnings or errors are understood.
- Check crawlability and indexing. Make sure the canonical page is reachable, the image URL can be fetched, robots directives do not block the page or image, and the page is eligible for indexing. A syntactically perfect object cannot help a URL that search engines cannot crawl.
- Request or wait for recrawling. After fixing issues, allow the page to be crawled again. Use Search Console enhancement reporting to watch detected Recipe items and newly reported errors.
- Re-test after edits. Treat a change to ingredients, directions, yield, timing or the primary image as a structured-data change. Update the visible recipe and JSON-LD in the same release, then validate again.
Hand-authored JSON-LD versus a CMS plugin
Neither approach is inherently preferred by the official documentation. Choose the one that gives your team reliable field-level control and a repeatable synchronization workflow.
| Decision factor | Hand-authored JSON-LD | CMS plugin or recipe module |
|---|---|---|
| Control of ingredient and instruction text | Direct control over every emitted value and array order. | Depends on the module’s field model and formatting rules. |
| Synchronization with visible content | Strong when both outputs share template data; risky if edited separately. | Convenient when one recipe editor powers both views; verify generated output. |
HowToStep and multiple sections |
Can model any structure you implement correctly. | Confirm that the module emits ordered steps and supports genuine sections. |
| Validation workflow | Requires your own deployment checks and Rich Results Test routine. | May provide warnings, but independent testing is still necessary. |
| Recipe variants | Flexible, but your code must select the same variant shown to visitors. | Depends on whether the module handles serving controls and substitutions consistently. |
| Maintenance burden | Low for a small site, higher when templates and fields multiply. | Lower initial effort, with dependence on module updates and its output decisions. |
Inspect the final page source or rendered DOM rather than trusting a plugin’s settings screen. A module can be configured correctly yet emit a stale description, duplicate object or incomplete instruction list after a template change.
Google-specific eligibility and display limits
Google says Recipe structured data can help users find recipes and can make pages eligible for enhancements in Search and Images. Required properties differ by feature and can change, so treat the Rich Results Test documentation and its live results as the operational check for your implementation. Commonly important properties include image, name, recipeInstructions, and timing or yield fields where applicable.

Use a finished-dish image that is crawlable and indexable. A decorative logo, an image blocked by access controls, or a photograph unrelated to the completed food does not accurately represent the recipe. Supply an array when you have several legitimate representations, and keep each URL live.
A passing test means that the syntax and detected feature signals are acceptable at test time. It does not guarantee a rich result, a particular snippet, inclusion in every image surface, or retention after a later content change. Search systems can choose not to display an enhancement even when no error is reported.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Apple support means in practice
Apple’s App Search Programming Guide lists Recipe among the web schemas it supports and explains that marking up structured data helps Apple better parse and understand website content for richer search results. Implement standard Schema.org JSON-LD and keep it complete; do not create an Apple-only ingredient syntax.
Apple does not promise that every Recipe property will be shown on every Apple product, device, country or query. Therefore, describe your implementation as making the content understandable to Apple’s parsers, not as guaranteeing an ingredient card, a fixed step order or a particular visual treatment.

Apple News is a different publishing format
Apple News Format is not a substitute for Recipe JSON-LD. Apple’s article guidance for Apple News requires a headline, author, publication date and complete article text in an article.json document. That file is used to publish an Apple News article. A public recipe page should still carry Schema.org Recipe JSON-LD for web search, whether or not the same story is distributed to Apple News.
Best Value
Validation, monitoring and update discipline
Use the Rich Results Test after every structural change
Run the public URL through Google’s Rich Results Test after adding or changing markup. During development, paste the JSON-LD to catch malformed JSON before deployment; after deployment, test the URL so crawlability, rendering and image access are included. Resolve errors first, then investigate warnings that represent missing or ambiguous information.
Use Search Console for trends, not a one-time pass
Once Google has recrawled the page, monitor the Recipe enhancement reports in Search Console. Look for new errors after template releases, disappearing items after URL migrations and spikes limited to a particular recipe set. A report reflects what Google detected during crawling; it is not a guarantee that a card will appear for every query.
Update both representations atomically
When a recipe changes, edit the visible ingredient list and directions and the JSON-LD in the same release. Recalculate totalTime when preparation or cooking time changes. Change recipeYield with any serving-size update, and keep per-serving nutrition consistent with that yield if nutrition data is displayed. Remove fields that are no longer shown or accurate; stale optional properties are worse than leaving them out.
Troubleshooting inaccurate or missing steps
The rich result shows the wrong instruction
- Compare the array order with the visible method. A reordered JavaScript list or alphabetized CMS field can change the sequence.
- Check that each
HowToStepcontains the action intext, not a heading, “Step 1” label or video prompt. - Inspect the rendered page source for duplicate Recipe objects. Two competing objects can leave a crawler with conflicting instructions.
- Confirm that a serving calculator, language switcher or recipe variant is not emitting a different instruction set from the one visitors see.
- Re-test the URL after correcting the source and wait for recrawling; an already indexed result can remain unchanged until Google processes the update.
Ingredients are missing or include unwanted copy
- Remove definitions, sales language, substitution commentary and section labels from
recipeIngredientunless they are necessary ingredient text shown to cooks. - Check that quantities and units are strings in the array, not nested objects or HTML fragments.
- Make sure ingredients loaded only after a blocked script are also available in crawlable HTML or server-rendered output.
The test reports no Recipe item
- Verify that the script is valid JSON and that the outer type is exactly
Recipe. - Check for a page-level noindex directive, robots blocking, authentication, or a canonical URL that points elsewhere.
- Confirm that the test is using the deployed URL and that the script is present in the response or rendered output.
- Ensure the page is actually a single recipe, rather than a category listing containing several partial recipes. Give each complete recipe its own canonical URL and object.
The image or timing fields fail
- Use a live, crawlable image of the finished dish and a URL that does not require a session or expiring token.
- Write durations as ISO 8601 values such as
PT15MorPT1H20M, not as free-form text. - Check that
totalTimereflects the stated preparation and cooking workflow and thatrecipeYieldmatches the visible serving information.
Implementation checklist
- The page has one accurate Schema.org
Recipeobject in JSON-LD. - The name, author, date, description and finished-dish image match visible page content.
- Ingredients contain only the necessary ingredient text, in the displayed order.
- Instructions contain every material action, in order, preferably as
HowToStepobjects. - No instruction text contains “Step 1,” “Directions,” “Watch the video” or promotional copy.
- Any
HowToSectionrepresents a real recipe section and contains its corresponding steps. - Durations use ISO 8601 notation, and yield agrees with serving controls and nutrition.
- Images and the canonical URL are crawlable and indexable.
- The visible recipe and JSON-LD are updated together whenever content changes.
- The URL passes the Rich Results Test, and Search Console is monitored after recrawling.
- Apple support is described as schema parsing support, not a guarantee of a specific display.
- Apple News publishing, if used, is handled separately with its required
article.jsondocument.
Key takeaways for an accurate result
Start with the page a cook reads, then model that page faithfully: recipeIngredient holds the necessary ingredient lines, and recipeInstructions holds the ordered method as HowToStep objects. Validate the deployed URL, keep images and timings accurate, and treat every recipe edit as a synchronization task. This gives Google the signals needed for recipe eligibility and gives Apple a standards-based description it can parse, while leaving the final decision about rich-result presentation to each platform.
