To add rain to an online Assetto Corsa session, run AssettoServer (or the stock dedicated server), use a CSP WeatherFX-compatible setup, install a paid Custom Shaders Patch preview on every client that must render rain, and select a rain weather type in server_cfg.ini or Content Manager. AssettoServer documents CSP 0.1.76 or newer for dynamic weather and RainFX. Rain graphics and rain physics are separate switches, so you can allow wet visuals without changing grip.

What you need before configuring rain
Rain is not a server-only feature. The server announces weather, but each driver’s game renders the result through Custom Shaders Patch (CSP) WeatherFX and RainFX. A player with an older or non-preview CSP build may join the session and still see dry conditions or incomplete effects.

- A running server: AssettoServer supports CSP WeatherFX v1, including dynamic weather, smooth transitions and RainFX. The documented minimum for those features is CSP 0.1.76.
- A compatible client build: Every player who should see rain needs a paid CSP preview build that contains RainFX. The rain implementation is in CSP preview releases, not in Sol or Pure.
- A weather controller: Your selected WeatherFX script must expose the rain type you intend to use. Sol and Pure can control weather and graphics, but neither supplies RainFX itself.
- Access to the server files: You need to edit
cfg/server_cfg.iniand restart the server after saving changes, unless you make the same change through a Content Manager preset.
Because CSP configurations are per client, two drivers can receive identical server settings and still see different skies, rain intensity or effects. Publish the required CSP version and preview status with your server password or connection details.
How rain is delivered in Assetto Corsa
Assetto Corsa’s stock weather list does not by itself provide the modern RainFX system. AssettoServer’s WeatherFX integration sends a weather state; CSP on each client interprets that state, draws precipitation and manages compatible transitions. This division explains the most common symptoms:

- Everyone sees dry weather: the server may still be set to a dry
GRAPHICSvalue, or the selected weather script has no rain entry. - Some drivers see rain and others do not: client CSP versions or preview access differ.
- Rain appears visually but grip does not change: rain physics is disabled, or the preview/server combination does not support the required physics options.
- Sol or Pure is selected but no rain appears: those extensions do not include RainFX; CSP preview support is still required.
Method 1: edit server_cfg.ini
Manual editing is the most reliable method when a weather does not appear in Content Manager’s dropdown or when you are maintaining a scripted server preset.
- Verify the client requirement. Tell drivers to run CSP 0.1.76 or newer for WeatherFX/RainFX support and a paid CSP preview build for rain rendering. Test with one client before announcing an event.
- Stop or close the server cleanly. Editing a file while the server is writing its configuration can overwrite your change when it exits.
- Open the active configuration. In the server installation, open
cfg/server_cfg.ini. Confirm that this is the file used by the launch command or service; editing an unused copy has no effect. - Find the weather block. Locate
[WEATHER_0]and itsGRAPHICSentry. This value is a WeatherFX weather-type ID, not a universal rain number. - Choose a rain type exposed by your installed script. The beginner documentation demonstrates changing the type to Heavy Rain. IDs can differ between weather scripts and versions, so use the ID shown by the installed WeatherFX script rather than copying an old number from a forum post.
- Save and restart. Weather settings are read when the server starts. A restart is required after the edit.
- Join with a preview-enabled client. Check that WeatherFX is active and that the CSP preview is the build intended for your server. Ask another driver to verify the result so you catch client-specific configuration problems.

GRAPHICS=your-installed-rain-weather-idThe placeholder above is deliberately not a universal value: replace it with the rain ID supplied by your current weather script. If the ID is invalid, the server can fall back to another weather or clients can display an unexpected state.
Method 2: choose rain in Content Manager
Content Manager provides a graphical route for servers managed through a preset.

- Open the server preset in Content Manager.
- Open the Conditions tab.
- Select WeatherFX as the weather system.
- Choose the desired rain weather from the available list.
- Save the preset and restart the server.
The list is generated from the weather script installed on the machine. If the rain weather you need is missing, edit server_cfg.ini manually and verify that the expected WeatherFX script is installed and selected. Do not assume that installing Pure or Sol will add a RainFX entry; CSP preview support remains the requirement for rain effects.
Visual rain versus rain physics
You can decide whether rain is merely an on-screen effect or also changes the driving surface. These are separate configurations and should be communicated separately to drivers.

DISABLE_RAIN_PHYSICS=1Place this in the relevant CSP extra-options file (csp_extra_options.ini) used by your installation. Confirm that you have edited the active file, not a backup or a client-only copy. Restart the server and test with a preview-enabled client.
Physics-capable setup
Preview CSP builds expose rain controls commonly grouped as RAIN_PREVIEW, including INTENSITY, REQUIRED and WITH_PHYSICS. The exact keys and accepted values can change between preview builds. Match the server options to the documentation that accompanies the installed build instead of pasting a configuration from a different revision. If a client lacks the required preview, it may not render the rain or reproduce the same physics state.
Choosing Sol, Pure or another WeatherFX controller
Sol and Pure are weather and graphics extensions that can be selected through CSP WeatherFX. Pure’s installation documentation requires manually extracting its files into the game root and then selecting Pure Gamma or Pure LCS under CSP WeatherFX. That controller choice affects the weather list and graphics pipeline, but it does not replace RainFX.

- Use the WeatherFX controller already installed and tested by your league.
- After changing controllers, reopen the Conditions tab and confirm that the intended rain weather is still available.
- If a weather entry disappears, check the controller selection and installed script before changing server IDs.
- Keep the controller choice consistent in your instructions; different client weather configurations can produce different results even when the server is unchanged.
Compatibility checklist for hosts and drivers
- AssettoServer or the dedicated server is running the intended preset.
- The server’s clients support CSP WeatherFX; AssettoServer documents CSP 0.1.76 or newer for dynamic weather and RainFX.
- Every driver who must see rain has a paid CSP preview build with RainFX.
- The selected
GRAPHICSvalue exists in the installed WeatherFX script. server_cfg.iniwas saved in the activecfgdirectory and the server was restarted.- The chosen Sol, Pure or other WeatherFX controller matches the weather setup.
- If using visual-only rain,
DISABLE_RAIN_PHYSICS=1is under[EXTRA_RULES]in the active extra-options file. - If using physics, the preview build’s
RAIN_PREVIEWsettings are present and supported by both server and clients. - Drivers have enabled WeatherFX in CSP and are not overriding the server weather with a conflicting local setup.
Troubleshooting: why rain is missing
The server starts, but the weather stays dry
Reopen [WEATHER_0] and confirm the GRAPHICS value is a rain weather ID from the installed script. Restart after saving. If you used Content Manager, verify that the preset you edited is the one actually launched.
Only some players see rain
Compare CSP versions and preview status first. RainFX is supplied by paid preview builds, so a standard CSP installation or an older build can join without rendering the effect. Have affected drivers verify that WeatherFX is enabled and that they are using the same controller and content.
The rain option is absent from Content Manager
The dropdown reflects the active WeatherFX script. Select the intended controller, check that its files are installed correctly, and then reopen the Conditions tab. If the entry remains absent, set the value manually in server_cfg.ini using an ID documented by that script.
Rain is visible but the car behaves as if the track is dry
Check whether visual-only mode is enabled through DISABLE_RAIN_PHYSICS=1. If it is not, inspect the preview build’s RAIN_PREVIEW requirements and the server’s physics-related options. Physics support is preview-dependent; do not infer wet grip from the presence of a rain texture alone.

Stop the server, edit the configuration used by the launch process, save it, and restart. Multiple server instances and copied presets are common causes of editing the wrong file. Confirm the active preset and watch the startup output for the weather configuration being loaded.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over server_cfg.ini, CSP extra options and restart timing. It is the better fit when you need custom WeatherFX IDs, scripted sessions or frequent testing. The trade-off is that you must maintain the server files, communicate CSP requirements and diagnose differences between clients.
Managed Assetto Corsa hosting can remove operating-system and uptime work. Before choosing it, confirm that the host lets you edit the active weather configuration, restart the instance, and use the AssettoServer/CSP features your event requires. A control panel that exposes only stock weather presets may not provide the WeatherFX rain ID or extra-options access needed for this setup.
A practical rollout plan for a league
- Create a copy of the working server preset.
- Choose the WeatherFX controller and install the matching weather content.
- Install a paid CSP preview on a test client and confirm WeatherFX is enabled.
- Set a rain weather in Content Manager or
server_cfg.ini. - Decide explicitly between visual-only mode and physics, documenting the choice for drivers.
- Restart the test server and have at least two clients join, including one machine that previously had trouble with rain.
- Record the CSP preview version, controller, weather ID and any
RAIN_PREVIEWoptions in the league’s connection instructions. - Only then copy the tested settings to the public preset.
This process separates server errors from client compatibility issues and prevents an event from unexpectedly changing tire behavior.
