You can’t install or run RPCS3 on a PS4: RPCS3 is a PlayStation 3 emulator, and its current guides list computer platforms—not PS4—as supported hosts. To use RPCS3, run it on a supported computer, install official PS3 system software in the emulator, and add legally owned PS3 game dumps. A PS4’s system software and PS4 game discs are not substitutes.
Can RPCS3 run on PS4?
No. RPCS3’s current guides list Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, and Android, but not PlayStation 4. The project describes RPCS3 as a PlayStation 3 emulator. The steps below therefore apply to RPCS3 on a supported computer, not to an app installed on a PS4. See the RPCS3 project and its Quickstart Guide for current platform and setup guidance.

PS4 physical games are Blu-ray discs for PS4, while RPCS3 is designed for PS3 software. A PS4 disc or PS4 system update is not the PS3 game dump or PS3 firmware that RPCS3 uses. Sony’s PS4 physical-games information describes the console’s game discs.

- A computer running an operating system currently listed by RPCS3 as supported.
- The official PS3 system software update file, which RPCS3’s guide says to install through the emulator.
- A legally owned PS3 game dump to add to RPCS3. Firmware and games are separate inputs.
- A check of the specific game’s entry in the RPCS3 compatibility list; compatibility varies by game and does not guarantee the same result on every computer or game copy.
How to add PS3 firmware and games
1. Get the official PS3 system software
Sony’s PS3 support page identified version 4.93 as current on October 7, 2026. Use Sony’s PS3 system software update page to obtain the official update file. Sony warns: “Do not perform updates using any data other than the official update data provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment over a network or on disc media, and do not perform updates by methods other than those described in the product documentation or in this site.”

2. Install the firmware in RPCS3
Open RPCS3 and use its firmware installation option to select the official PS3 update file. The project’s guides describe installing official PS3 firmware in RPCS3. Sony’s USB directions below are for updating a physical PS3; the available RPCS3 instructions do not establish that a USB drive is required to install firmware in the emulator.
3. Add your legally owned PS3 game dump
In RPCS3, choose File → Add Games and select the location of your game dump. The exact process for creating and preparing a dump depends on the game and is not covered here; follow the current instructions in the RPCS3 Quickstart Guide. Do not substitute a PS4 disc for a PS3 game dump.

4. Check the game’s compatibility entry
Look up the title in the RPCS3 compatibility list before troubleshooting. In September 2026, the database recorded 2,809 Playable, 721 Ingame, 31 Intro, and 2 Loadable entries. These are changing database status counts, not a promise that every copy or computer configuration will work; check the individual game entry for its classification and notes.

If you are updating a PS3 console rather than installing firmware in RPCS3, Sony’s computer-transfer procedure is to format a USB drive as FAT32, create a PS3/UPDATE folder, and save the update file there as PS3UPDAT.PUP. On the console, select Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media. These are Sony’s physical-console update directions, not a requirement established for RPCS3.
