How to Add Product Videos to Shopify and Sync Them with Google Merchant Center

Add a video in Shopify from Products → select a product → Media, either by uploading a file or embedding a publicly accessible YouTube or Vimeo video. To send the product to Google Merchant Center, install and configure Shopify’s Google & YouTube sales channel, make the product available to that channel, and resolve any product-data errors.

Do not assume that a Shopify media video automatically becomes Google’s video_link attribute. Shopify documents product-information synchronization, while Google documents video_link as a separate optional product-data field. After synchronization, inspect Merchant Center’s product data and Video assets; provide video_link through an appropriate Google data source if the expected video association is missing.

What the complete workflow does

There are two connected but distinct jobs:

  1. Put the video on the Shopify product. Shopify stores uploaded files and YouTube or Vimeo embeds as product media.
  2. Send eligible product information to Google Merchant Center. The Google & YouTube sales channel handles catalog synchronization, but Google’s explicit video_link field follows its own specification.

A product can complete the first job and still need attention in the second. Use this order: add and test the video in Shopify, connect the sales channel, select the products that may sync, fix catalog requirements, wait for processing, and then verify the video inside Merchant Center.

Shopify’s official product-media instructions are at Adding product media. Its synchronization behavior and timing are described in the Google product-sync guide.

Add a video to a Shopify product

Upload a video file

  1. In Shopify admin, open Products.
  2. Select the product that should contain the video.
  3. In the product’s Media area, choose the option to add media.
  4. Upload a new video file, select media that already exists in your Shopify files, or add media from a URL.
  5. Save the product and open its storefront page to check the result.

The same Media area can contain product photographs, videos and 3D media. Add the video to the specific product and variant context where shoppers need to see it; adding a file to Shopify’s general file storage does not by itself attach it to a product.

Shopify’s current upload limits are documented in Product media types:

Requirement Shopify uploaded-video limit
Maximum duration 10 minutes
Maximum file size 1 GB
Maximum resolution Up to 4K, 4096 × 2160 pixels
Accepted upload formats MP4, MOV or WEBM
Shopify processing MOV and WEBM uploads are converted; Shopify serves video as MP4 or HLS

These limits apply to uploaded files. They do not apply in the same way to YouTube or Vimeo embeds, because those videos remain hosted by the external service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Embed a YouTube or Vimeo video

In the product’s Media section, use the URL option and paste a supported video address. The video must be publicly accessible or configured to allow embedding. Shopify documents the standard YouTube watch?v= URL and direct Vimeo video URLs as supported forms.

A YouTube Shorts address may not work when pasted in its Shorts form. Convert it to the corresponding standard YouTube watch URL before adding it. For example, use the video’s normal watch?v=... address rather than relying on a Shorts path.

Cloud-drive sharing links are another common failure point. Many open a preview webpage instead of exposing a playable media file, so Shopify may reject the URL or fail to render it. Use an actual supported embed URL or upload the file instead. The accepted URL behavior is covered in Shopify’s media-add instructions.

Because an embed is hosted on YouTube or Vimeo, it does not need to satisfy Shopify’s 1 GB, 10-minute or 4K upload limits. It still needs to remain available, playable and embeddable for customers.

Confirm that the theme can display video

Adding media in admin does not guarantee that shoppers will see a player. The online-store theme must support product video. Shopify says Online Store 2.0 themes built by Shopify and all Horizon-family themes support video and 3D media. A third-party theme may use a different product-template implementation, especially if it is older or heavily customized.

Check the product page in an incognito browser and on a mobile device. If the video appears in the product editor but not on the storefront:

  • Confirm that the media is attached to the intended product, not merely uploaded to the file library.
  • Check whether the product template includes a media gallery or video block.
  • Review the theme developer’s documentation for the installed theme version.
  • Ask a Shopify Partner or theme developer to update the product-media component if the theme does not support video.

Shopify’s general product-media guidance explains the theme-support limitation. A successful upload is therefore a storage result, not proof of storefront presentation.

Prepare Shopify and Google Merchant Center

Check account and channel prerequisites

The Shopify Google & YouTube channel requires a Google account, a Merchant Center account, an eligible domain and completion of the channel’s setup checks. Google may also require business, shipping, tax, contact and policy information depending on the country and destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open Shopify’s Sales channels area, add or open Google & YouTube, and follow its connection prompts. Shopify’s current requirements are listed at Google & YouTube channel requirements, while the connection sequence is described in Connect Google & YouTube.

Be cautious when an existing Merchant Center account already receives products from another feed. Shopify notes that connecting the account and syncing through its channel can overwrite an existing feed. Before accepting the connection, identify which feed currently controls titles, prices, availability, identifiers and other attributes, and decide which system should remain authoritative.

Choose which products Shopify may send

  1. Open the Google & YouTube sales channel in Shopify.
  2. Review the products that are available to the online store and to the channel.
  3. Make the product containing the video available to Google & YouTube. You can select products individually or use the channel’s availability controls, depending on the current interface.
  4. Complete or correct Google-specific product information requested by the channel.
  5. Save the changes and review the product’s status in the channel.

On initial setup, Shopify generally syncs products that are available to the online store, but merchants can choose which products are available to Google & YouTube. “Available” means Shopify has included the item for synchronization; it does not mean Google has approved the item for display.

Understand product approval and synchronization timing

Google requires product data that meets its policies and attribute rules. Shopify identifies common causes of sync errors such as missing descriptions, missing images, unavailable landing pages, and missing or incorrect product categories or identifiers. Open the product’s Google status in the sales channel rather than relying only on its availability setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Event Timing documented by Shopify What to do
First catalog synchronization May take up to 24 hours Wait for processing, then inspect product status and errors.
Later product changes Typically sync within a few hours Allow processing time after changing media, price, inventory or attributes.
Google data freshness Google applies a 30-day expiry policy; the channel refreshes synced data within that period Keep the Shopify product active and resolve data issues so the offer remains current.

These are operational windows, not guarantees; interface labels and processing behavior can change. Shopify’s syncing guide is the reference for the current channel behavior.

Why a Shopify video may not become Google’s video_link

Shopify calls an uploaded or embedded file product media. Google calls its explicit product-video attribute video_link. The Shopify synchronization documentation explains that product information is sent to Merchant Center; it does not state that every Shopify product-media item is automatically written to Google’s video_link attribute.

Therefore, treat the two operations separately:

Route What it controls Advantages Limitations or checks
Shopify product media plus Google & YouTube channel The video shown with the Shopify product and the product information synchronized from Shopify One catalog workflow; the simplest starting point for a Shopify store The official Shopify instructions do not confirm automatic population of Google’s video_link; Merchant Center verification is required
Direct Google video_link product data The explicit video attribute on a Merchant Center product offer Direct control over the URL Google receives for that attribute Requires a compliant URL and a Google product-data source such as a feed, supplemental feed or API workflow

The routes are not mutually exclusive. Keep the video on the Shopify product for the storefront, then add direct Google product data only when Merchant Center does not associate the video as expected.

Google’s requirements for video_link

Google documents video_link as an optional product attribute in the Merchant Center video-link specification. The important rules are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You may provide up to 10 video links for one product.
  • Every URL must begin with http:// or https://.
  • Accepted video formats include MPG, MP4, WMV, AVI, MOV, FLV, MPEG-1 and MPEGPS.
  • YouTube URLs are permitted.
  • For other hosts, the URL must point directly to a raw video file, not to a webpage, login screen or cloud-drive preview.
  • The video should match the specific product offer.
  • The merchant must own the rights needed to use the marketing content, and the video must comply with Shopping policies.

These requirements differ from Shopify’s upload rules. A file that Shopify accepts is not automatically a valid Google URL, and a YouTube embed that works on Shopify still needs to be supplied in a form Google accepts if you are populating video_link directly.

Check Merchant Center after Shopify sync

Inspect product data and status

  1. Allow the initial Shopify-to-Google synchronization window to pass.
  2. Open Merchant Center and locate the product that contains the Shopify video.
  3. Review the offer’s product data, diagnostics and destination status.
  4. Look for a video field, a video asset association or a related warning.
  5. Open the product landing page from Merchant Center and confirm that the Shopify page still displays the video.

Do not interpret a clean Shopify channel status as proof that Google has linked the video. Shopify can report that product information synchronized while Merchant Center separately evaluates attributes, URLs, policy compliance and product matching.

Review the Video assets page

Google describes a Merchant Center Video assets page that can aggregate videos from websites and YouTube. Website videos may be surfaced and automatically mapped to product offers; YouTube videos may receive AI-suggested product mappings for merchant review. This feature is described separately from Shopify’s catalog-sync instructions.

Open Merchant Center Video assets and check whether the expected video appears and whether Google has associated it with the correct offer. Approve or correct suggested mappings when the interface presents them. The official documentation reviewed does not establish that every video uploaded to Shopify product media will be discovered or mapped automatically, so absence from Video assets is a signal to use a direct product-data route rather than to keep waiting indefinitely.

Add video_link through a Google data source when needed

If the Shopify video is not present or is associated with the wrong offer, add the attribute through the Merchant Center data source that controls your products. Depending on your account, that may be a primary feed, a supplemental feed, an API-based submission or another supported product-data method.

  1. Identify the data source currently controlling the affected offer.
  2. Add the product’s existing identifier and a video_link value to that source.
  3. Use a YouTube URL or a direct raw-video URL that meets Google’s format and protocol rules.
  4. Match the video to the exact product identifier, not merely to a product family or collection.
  5. Submit or refresh the data source.
  6. Recheck diagnostics, product data and Video assets after Google processes the update.

Do not create a second competing source without understanding precedence. If Shopify’s channel owns the primary feed, a supplemental source may be safer than replacing the feed; the correct choice depends on how your Merchant Center account is configured.

When a direct URL is hosted outside YouTube, test it in a private browser window. It should return the video file itself without requiring a session, accepting a preview page, or redirecting to a sign-in screen.

Troubleshoot common failures

The video uploads but is missing from the storefront

  • Confirm that the media is attached to the product and saved.
  • Check the active product template and theme version.
  • Verify that the theme supports product video and that no custom gallery setting hides videos.
  • Test with a Shopify-built Online Store 2.0 or Horizon-family theme preview if available; this isolates a theme limitation from a bad file.
  • For a third-party theme, follow its developer instructions or obtain Shopify Partner help.

Shopify rejects the uploaded file

  • Check that the file is MP4, MOV or WEBM.
  • Check the 1 GB size, 10-minute duration and 4096 × 2160 maximum resolution.
  • Re-encode an oversized or unusually encoded file as a conventional MP4, then upload again.
  • If you are using a hosted video, replace a cloud-drive preview URL with a supported YouTube or Vimeo URL, or upload the file directly.

The product is not syncing to Merchant Center

  • Confirm that the product is available to the online store and the Google & YouTube channel.
  • Open the channel’s product status and read the exact diagnostic instead of assuming the video is the cause.
  • Add missing descriptions, images, landing-page access, categories or identifiers as requested.
  • Check that the domain and Merchant Center account remain eligible and connected.
  • Allow up to 24 hours for an initial sync and several hours for ordinary changes before escalating.

The product syncs, but Google has no video

  • Inspect the offer in Merchant Center rather than only Shopify.
  • Check the Video assets page for website discovery or a YouTube suggestion.
  • Verify that the video URL is publicly reachable and matches the exact product.
  • If no association appears, submit video_link through the relevant Google product-data source.
  • Check diagnostics again after Google processes the new data.

Google maps the video to the wrong product

  • Review the product identifier and landing-page relationship used by the mapping.
  • Remove or correct a broad video description that could apply to several products.
  • Use direct video_link data for explicit product-level control.
  • Review suggested mappings in Video assets before accepting them.

Operational checklist before publishing the product

  • The file or embed URL is playable and rights-cleared.
  • An uploaded file meets Shopify’s 10-minute, 1 GB, 4K and format limits.
  • The video is attached in Products → product → Media.
  • The active theme displays product video on desktop and mobile.
  • The product is available to the Google & YouTube channel.
  • Required Google attributes and landing-page information are complete.
  • The product’s Google status is approved or has no unresolved blocking error.
  • Merchant Center’s product data and Video assets pages have been checked.
  • If the video is absent, a compliant video_link has been added through the controlling Google data source.
  • The video is matched to the exact offer and uses content for which the merchant has marketing rights.

Which approach should you use?

Use Shopify media first when

Your priority is a video on the Shopify product page and you want the least complicated catalog workflow. Upload the file or add a YouTube/Vimeo embed, confirm theme support, connect Google & YouTube, and then inspect Merchant Center.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add direct Google data when

You need explicit control of Google’s video_link attribute, Merchant Center did not discover the Shopify video, or Google mapped a video to the wrong offer. Keep the Shopify media for the storefront and supplement the Google product data rather than deleting the storefront video.

Use both when

The Shopify page needs a rich product gallery while Google Shopping requires a precisely controlled video association. This combined setup is valid, but maintain one clear source for each Google product attribute to avoid conflicting feeds.

Bottom line

Add and test the video in Shopify’s product Media section, then use the Google & YouTube channel to synchronize eligible product information. Because Shopify’s documentation does not confirm automatic mapping from product media to Google’s video_link, verify the offer and Video assets in Merchant Center and submit a compliant direct link through Google’s product-data system whenever the association is missing.
