To add product filters, first decide which catalog, collection, archive, or search pages should be filterable, then configure filter fields from consistent product data and enable them in the page’s theme or template. Shopify uses Search & Discovery plus compatible theme settings; WooCommerce block-based stores use the Product Filters block beside Product Collection.
Plan the filters before changing your store
Filters only help when their values match how customers shop. Audit your catalog and choose fields that are populated consistently, such as price, availability, category, brand or vendor, product type, size, color, and other attributes. Decide whether filters belong on collection pages, search results, or both.
- Use one naming convention for equivalent values (for example, do not mix “Blue,” “blue,” and “Navy” unless they are intentionally different).
- Populate product options, attributes, metafields, categories, prices, and stock status before expecting them to appear as filter choices.
- Plan a mobile layout, clear-all control, and a useful no-results message.
Shopify: configure Search & Discovery, then enable the theme display
1. Create the filter definitions
- In Shopify admin, open Apps > Search & Discovery > Filters.
- Select Add filter and choose a source. Standard sources include availability, category, price, product type, tags, and vendor.
- For custom facets, select product options, product metafields, category metafields, variant metafields, or metaobjects. Metafield filters require definitions and values on the relevant products or variants.
- Optionally rename the label, change its display or behavior, group values, and set the sort order, then save. Drag filters to reorder them.
Shopify shows only values relevant to the current collection or search result. Different filter dimensions combine with AND logic; multiple values within one filter use OR logic by default. Certain tag and list-based metafield filters can be configured for AND behavior. See the Shopify filter documentation.
2. Turn filtering on in the theme
Creating a filter does not make it visible automatically. In the theme editor, open the collection product-grid settings and the search-results settings, then enable storefront filtering where those controls are available. The installed theme must support filters. Shopify notes that a theme without support can retain filter definitions in Search & Discovery while displaying none to shoppers; its guidance is documented in the theme storefront-filter settings.

Custom storefronts need the filter Liquid API or Storefront API. Shopify’s current ProductFilter input reference covers availability, category, price, product type, vendor, tag, product metafields, taxonomy metafields, variant metafields, and variant options. Availability and price are enabled by default and are customized through Search & Discovery.
Shopify limits to account for
These limits apply specifically to Shopify’s documented storefront filters: a store can configure up to 25 filters, each filter displays no more than 100 values, collections with more than 5,000 products do not display filters, and searches with more than 100,000 results do not display them. Price filters are unavailable for currencies other than the shop’s default currency. Confirm current limits in the Shopify Help Center before designing a very large catalog.

WooCommerce: add Product Filters to a block template
1. Place the core block
- In WordPress, go to Appearance > Editor > Design > Templates.
- Open the Product Catalog template (or the relevant collection, archive, or taxonomy template).
- Add Product Filters near Product Collection. The block is context-aware and filters the catalog represented by that template.
- Add and configure individual filter elements. WooCommerce core documents price, rating, attribute, availability, category, brand, and tag filters.
The block can show attribute, availability, category, and brand choices as lists or chips, with product counts available for some types. Active-filter chips can remove one selection or clear all selections. By default, results update without a full page reload; the Product Collection setting can instead force full-page reloads. On small screens, filters can collapse into a drawer. Follow the current WooCommerce Product Filters block documentation.
2. Check that the data can produce choices
An attribute filter needs at least one product using the selected attribute to show meaningful choices. A rating filter appears only when rated products exist. Empty or inconsistently assigned attributes will therefore produce sparse or misleading controls.

When an extension is warranted
Use the WooCommerce Product Filters extension only when the core block lacks a required capability. Its editor provides configurable sources and query behavior, multi-select, and URL keys; within an element, AND requires all selected conditions and OR accepts any selected condition. The extension documentation also warns that its [wcpf_filters] shortcode does not currently apply filtering functionality to WooCommerce Blocks. Check current compatibility and pricing before adopting it; details are in the Product Filters extension documentation.
Shopify and WooCommerce compared
| Decision point | Shopify | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|
| Native setup | Search & Discovery app, followed by theme settings | Product Filters block in the Product Catalog or related template |
| Data sources | Availability, category, price, type, tags, vendor, options, product/category/variant metafields, and metaobjects | Price, rating, attributes, availability, category, brand, and tags in the core block |
| Logic | AND between dimensions; OR between values in one filter by default, with some configurable AND cases | Core block behavior follows its configured elements; the extension documents AND and OR modes |
| Display and navigation | Theme-controlled collection and search display; compatible custom storefronts can use APIs | Lists or chips, active-filter removal, optional full reload, and mobile drawer |
| Scale constraints | 25 filters per store, 100 values per filter, and documented collection/search thresholds | No equivalent limits are stated in the cited core block documentation |
Test the storefront before publishing
Use the live theme or template—not only the admin preview—and verify each of these paths:

- Open a collection or search page where the filter should appear.
- Select one value, then values from a second dimension, and confirm the resulting products match the intended AND/OR behavior.
- Check price, stock, size, color, brand, and any custom metafield or attribute filters against products that actually contain those values.
- Create a combination that should return no products and confirm the page explains the state without trapping the shopper.
- Remove one active filter and then clear all filters; verify the product list and URL or page state update correctly.
- Repeat on a narrow screen, including opening, scrolling, applying, and closing the filter drawer or panel.
- For Shopify, test a collection near the documented 5,000-product threshold and a very large search only if those cases exist in your store. For WooCommerce, confirm the block is present in every archive or taxonomy template that needs it.
Common reasons filters do not appear
Shopify filter exists in admin but not on the storefront
- The theme does not support storefront filtering.
- Filtering is disabled in the collection product-grid or search-results settings.
- The current collection or query exceeds Shopify’s documented display thresholds.
- No products in the current result contain values for the selected custom field.
WooCommerce filter is empty or missing choices
- The Product Filters block is not in the active catalog, archive, or taxonomy template.
- Products do not have the selected attribute, rating, brand, or other source assigned.
- The filter is placed outside the context of Product Collection.
- A mobile drawer or block visibility setting hides the controls at the current screen width.
The Bottom Line
Choose the pages and product data first. Shopify requires both Search & Discovery configuration and compatible theme support; WooCommerce requires the Product Filters block in the right catalog template. Consistent attributes, deliberate filter logic, and storefront testing determine whether the controls actually help shoppers.
