Google’s instructions cover installing and using Now Playing on a Pixel phone, while its Wear OS app guide lists YouTube Music but not Now Playing. To identify songs, set up Now Playing on your Pixel and check its history there.
What Pixel Now Playing does
Now Playing identifies nearby music on Pixel phones. It first checks an on-device song library. If it cannot match a song locally, it may send a short digital audio fingerprint for a cloud search. Google announced a standalone Now Playing app on March 3, 2026, with a history tab for reviewing identified tracks and opening them in a preferred music app. Google’s Pixel Phone Help page describes the feature and its phone setup; the March Pixel Drop announcement describes the standalone app and history.

Set up Now Playing on your Pixel phone
- On the Pixel phone, download the Now Playing app from the Play Store.
- Follow the app’s setup prompts on the phone. Google says the app may take up to 24 hours after download to become usable.
- When you want to revisit a match, open Now Playing on the phone and check its history. The app can also show favorites and links to a connected streaming service.
These are phone steps: Google does not document installing or configuring Now Playing through a Wear OS watch.

Google’s Wear OS app guide lists YouTube Music among the Google apps that can work with Wear OS, and notes that app experiences vary by device. That listing concerns music-app functionality; it does not say that a watch listens for nearby songs or performs Pixel Now Playing recognition. Google’s Wear OS app guide does not document Now Playing as a watch app.

What about third-party sync apps?
A community post describes a third-party app intended to sync Pixel Now Playing discoveries to a Wear OS watch. The same discussion includes a report that songs did not arrive despite setup attempts. This is an unverified lead, not an official Google feature or evidence of dependable compatibility. The community discussion does not establish whether the app is currently available, maintained, or compatible with a particular phone and watch.
If you consider such an app, check its current Play Store listing and recent user reports, and confirm its required permissions and supported phone and watch models before installing. Do not assume it offers a watch tile, complication, continuous listening, offline recognition, or reliable automatic transfer unless the current app documentation confirms those capabilities.

What to expect
- For Google’s documented setup, recognition happens through Now Playing on a Pixel phone, and recognized tracks can be reviewed in the phone app’s history.
- Wear OS support for YouTube Music does not make the watch a Pixel Now Playing listener.
- Third-party syncing may be an option, but its current availability, compatibility, and reliability are not established by the available community report.
