Rust treats server.description as one quoted configuration value. Insert the literal escape sequence n where you want a line break and nn where you want a blank line between paragraphs; do not press Enter inside the quoted value.

The exact syntax Rust expects
A Rust server description is displayed in the server connection or information window. The setting is parsed as a single quoted value, so a physical line break in server.cfg is not the same thing as a rendered new line. Use a backslash followed by a lowercase n character instead.

The single n before “No VIP pay-to-win” starts a new line without adding a blank line. Keep the complete assignment on one physical configuration line, including the opening and closing quotation marks.
One line versus one paragraph
Use one escape for a compact list of separate lines:

Why pressing Enter can break the configuration
Rust reads the setting as a quoted string. Pressing Enter before the closing quote can terminate the assignment unexpectedly, leave part of the text outside the value, or cause the server to ignore the malformed line. A text editor may wrap a long line visually, but visual wrapping is different from inserting a newline character. Leave the value on one physical line even when your editor displays it across several screen rows.

The same rule applies when the description is supplied in a startup command or a hosting panel field. The command-line form uses the startup variable shown in Facepunch’s server documentation:

How to add paragraphs in a self-hosted server
- Stop editing the wrong identity. Confirm which Rust server instance you are changing if the machine hosts more than one. Each instance can have its own identity and configuration directory.
- Open the active configuration. Edit the instance’s
server.cfg, or open the startup command field if your launch script defines+server.descriptionthere. Do not create a second configuration file and assume the server will read it. - Write the value on one physical line. Start with
server.description, add a space, then the opening quote. Typenfor each new line andnnbetween paragraphs. Finish with the closing quote. - Check the quotes and slashes. Every opening quote needs a matching closing quote. The line break marker is a backslash plus lowercase
n; typing a forward slash, an uppercaseN, or only the letternwill not produce the intended result. - Save the file without adding a physical newline inside the value. Your editor can wrap the display, but the stored setting must remain one assignment line.
- Reload or restart. If the host accepts console commands while the server is running, issue
server.readcfgto reload the configuration. If that command is unavailable or your setup does not expose the console, use the host’s normal save-and-restart workflow. - Verify in the server information view. Open the listing or connection window as a player would. Confirm that each intended break appears and that the text did not stop at the first quote.
Example with rules and schedule
server.description "Welcome to Cedar Valley.nnWeekly wipe: Thursday.nRegion: North America.nnRules: no cheating, harassment, or pay-to-win kits.nSupport: contact an administrator through our community channel."This remains one physical line in the configuration file. The visible result has four readable blocks: a welcome, schedule and region details, rules, and support information.

Applying the change through a managed hosting panel
Panel layouts differ, but the underlying value is the same. Look for a field labelled Startup command, Server variables, Configuration, or Console. Some panels provide a dedicated description box; others require the complete +server.description argument.
- Open the control panel for the correct Rust instance.
- Find the field that controls
server.description. If the panel shows a raw command line, preserve the+server.descriptionprefix. - Enter the text with literal
nandnnescapes. Do not paste paragraphs with physical Enter characters unless the panel explicitly converts them to escapes. - Save or apply the setting.
- Use the panel’s console to run
server.readcfgwhen supported. Otherwise perform the panel’s documented restart or stop/start action. - Check the public server information view after the process has finished loading.
A panel may sanitize quotation marks, automatically wrap text, or provide a visual editor. If the displayed description remains on one line, switch to the raw configuration or command view and inspect the actual stored value. The important test is whether the saved value contains backslash-lowercase-n pairs, not whether the panel’s text box appears to have multiple rows.
Designing a description players can scan
Paragraphs are useful when each block answers a different player question. Put the most decision-critical information first, because players often see only the beginning of a listing.

Recommended content order
- Identity: state the server’s style, such as vanilla, roleplay, creative, or player-versus-environment.
- Reset schedule: give the wipe day and clarify whether the schedule is weekly or monthly.
- Rates and rules: mention significant modifiers and the rules that affect joining or playing.
- Region and time zone: identify the intended region so players can estimate latency and active hours.
- Community and support: provide the approved community contact or instructions for reporting a problem.
Keep each paragraph focused. A short block containing one topic is easier to read than a single wall of text, especially in a narrow server-information window. Avoid placing browser-filter information in the prose when the same information belongs in server tags.

A reusable plain-text template

The bracketed items in this example are ordinary text placeholders; they are not Rust variables and should not be left unchanged in a live listing.
Keep discovery filters in server.tags
server.description is for readable prose. Browser filters belong in the separate server.tags setting, which uses a comma-separated value. Facepunch’s documented tag examples include weekly, monthly, vanilla, pve, roleplay, and creative, along with region values such as NA, EU, and OC.
server.tags "weekly,vanilla,pve,NA"Do not rely on a paragraph such as “weekly vanilla server in NA” to create a browser filter. Put the matching filter terms in server.tags and use the description to explain what those labels mean for players.
Reloading, restarting, and confirming the result
When server.readcfg is appropriate
The current ConVar reference describes the description setting as persistent in server.cfg and applicable at runtime. On hosts that expose the command, server.readcfg lets you reload the saved values without a full process restart. Run it only after saving the correct file or panel value; reloading does not repair a malformed line.
When a restart is safer
Use the host’s restart workflow when the panel does not expose the command, when the startup command is the source of the value, or when a reload appears to have no effect. A restart also helps identify whether the active instance is reading a different configuration directory than the one you edited.
What to check after applying
- Open the server’s information or connection window from a separate client session.
- Confirm that the first paragraph is visible and that later paragraphs appear in the intended order.
- Check punctuation around each break; a missing quote can truncate the entire value.
- If you changed both description and tags, verify the browser filter separately because tags and prose are independent settings.
Troubleshooting descriptions that stay on one line or disappear

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a real multiline value: Rust expects the setting as one quoted assignment; visual line wrapping is fine, physical line breaks inside the value are not.
- Confusing slash direction: the escape uses a backslash (
), not a forward slash (/). - Capitalizing the marker: use lowercase
n. - Editing a template instead of the live instance: installations with multiple identities can make a correct edit appear ineffective.
- Assuming a reload happened: saving a file does not guarantee that a running process has reread it; explicitly run
server.readcfgwhere available or restart. - Putting every keyword in the prose: use
server.tagsfor browser discovery and reserve paragraphs for information players need to understand. - Expecting an official universal character limit: no authoritative maximum character or paragraph count is established here. Keep the copy concise and verify how your own client displays it.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting for description changes
The line-break syntax does not change between hosting models, but the work required to apply it does.

If you administer your own machine, direct file access gives you the clearest way to inspect the exact stored characters. A managed panel can be quicker for routine edits, but its visual formatting may hide whether the required backslashes were preserved.
A safe update checklist
- Identify the live Rust server instance.
- Back up the current
server.cfgor copy the existing description before editing. - Draft the wording in a plain-text editor.
- Convert each intended line break to
nand each paragraph gap tonn. - Paste the complete value into one quoted
