Install the 7 Days to Die-specific uMod/Oxide build that matches your server’s operating system and game build, copy it into the existing dedicated-server folder, restart the server, and run oxide.version. Once the framework responds, place unchanged .cs plugin files in oxide/plugins (or umod/plugins on installations that use that name) and check the console for compilation and load messages.

What Oxide (uMod) does on a 7 Days to Die server
Oxide is the modding framework distributed through uMod. It provides the server-side plugin loader, permissions and hooks that plugins use to add commands, administration tools, gameplay changes and automation. It is not a client-side mod pack: players normally connect with the unmodified game unless a particular plugin says otherwise.
Installing the framework does not install gameplay plugins by itself. You first add the framework to the dedicated-server installation, confirm that it loaded, and then add individual plugin source files. A plugin can still fail even when uMod is working if the plugin targets another game build, needs a dependency, or contains an error.

Choose the installation method
Your operating system and level of file access determine how the package is copied. The framework files must end up in the directory from which the 7 Days to Die dedicated server actually starts; uploading them somewhere else has no effect.

A one-click installer is only a shortcut for copying the correct files. You still need to verify the loaded version and plugin compatibility, and you should keep your own backup of saves and configuration before replacing framework files.

Prerequisites and a safe backup
- A working 7 Days to Die dedicated server installation that you can stop and start.
- Administrative access to the server directory, either locally, through FTP/SFTP, or through a hosting panel.
- The server’s operating system (Windows or Linux) and the current game build number.
- A recent copy of the entire server directory or at least the saves, configuration, and any custom scripts.
- A way to read the server console after startup. RCON is useful for a remote machine but is not required if the panel supplies a console.
Stop the server before replacing framework files. A running process can keep old assemblies open, overwrite files during shutdown, or leave a partially updated installation. Copy the backup outside the live server directory and label it with the date and game build so you can restore it if a plugin or update causes a problem.
Install uMod/Oxide step by step
1. Identify the real server directory
Find the folder that contains the existing dedicated-server files and the startup script or executable used by your service. On a hosted panel, this is usually the instance’s file-manager root; on a remote machine, it is the directory selected by the startup command. Do not assume that a general game-library folder is the active instance if the panel or script points somewhere else.
Stop the server and record the current framework state, if any. If you are replacing an older uMod build, make a backup before proceeding rather than deleting the old files first.

2. Download the build for this game and operating system
Use the official uMod 7 Days to Die page and select the current Windows or Linux package that matches the server environment. uMod’s getting-started guidance is explicit: download the version specific to your game. The 7 Days to Die page lists framework versions, game-build notes and separate Linux guidance, so read those notes instead of choosing the newest file by name alone.

If the server runs Linux through a panel or a virtual machine, select the Linux build even when you download it from a Windows computer. Likewise, check the game-build requirement shown on the page; a framework compiled for an older build may start incompletely or prevent plugins from loading after an update.
3. Extract and merge the framework files
- Extract the downloaded archive to a temporary folder on your computer, unless your host’s file manager can extract it directly.
- Open the extracted package and the existing 7 Days to Die server directory side by side.
- Copy the package contents into the server directory, allowing folders and files to merge with the existing installation. Copy the contents at the level intended by the package, not an extra parent folder that would leave the framework one level too deep.
- When prompted about existing files, replace them with the files from the matching uMod build. Do not delete saves or unrelated server configuration.
- For a remote server, upload the extracted contents with FTP/SFTP or use the panel’s upload and extract functions. Wait for the transfer to finish before starting the service.
The framework is installed alongside the dedicated-server files; it is not uploaded to a client-side Mods folder. Keep the backup until the server and its plugins have passed a full test.
4. Start the server and verify the framework
Start the dedicated server using the same script or panel action you normally use. Wait until the server has completed its normal startup, then enter this command in the server console or chat:
oxide.version
A working installation returns the installed Oxide/uMod version. This command is the first decisive check: if it does not respond, troubleshoot the framework placement, operating-system package and startup directory before attempting to install plugins. A plugin cannot load on a framework that the server has not loaded.

5. Install a plugin without changing its filename
Download a plugin from a reputable source and read its compatibility notes, dependencies and installation instructions. Keep the file as an unchanged .cs source file. Do not rename the extension to .txt, add a second extension, alter the code, or place the archive itself in the plugins directory.
Upload the file to the plugins directory inside the active server installation:
oxide/pluginsis the usual path.umod/pluginsis used by some installations and panels.
If neither folder exists, confirm that the framework files were copied into the correct server directory and that the server has started at least once. Create a missing plugins folder only when the installation’s layout and documentation indicate that it belongs there; do not create a parallel folder in a parent directory by guesswork.
uMod/Oxide detects plugin files and compiles them automatically. Many installations can accept a plugin while the server is running, although stopping the server first is safer when you are adding several files or replacing a framework build.

Watch the server console immediately after uploading the file. A successful load produces a plugin-loaded or compilation-success message that identifies the file. Some plugins also create configuration, data or language files under the corresponding oxide directories.

If there is no message, check the following in order:
- Confirm that the file is in the active instance’s
oxide/pluginsorumod/pluginsfolder. - Confirm that the filename still ends in exactly
.csand that your file manager did not append another extension. - Read the console and error logs for a compiler error, missing dependency or unsupported API.
- Compare the plugin’s stated game and framework requirements with the versions shown by
oxide.version. - Install any dependency named by the plugin, then restart or reload it according to that plugin’s instructions.
Do not treat the appearance of a configuration file as proof that every feature works. Use the plugin’s documented command or a controlled test in the game, and check for errors after the first use.
How to select plugins safely
Plugin quality and compatibility change independently of the framework. Before uploading a file, evaluate it against the current server rather than relying on an old recommendation.

Test a new plugin on a copy of the world or during a maintenance window when possible. Keep a record of the plugin filename, version and dependencies so you can identify what changed if the server fails to start.

Game updates can invalidate both the framework and individual plugins. Compatibility is therefore a moving fact, not a permanent property of a download that worked last month.
- Stop the server and back up saves, configuration and the current server directory.
- Return to the official 7 Days to Die uMod page and select the build that matches the new game build and the server’s Windows or Linux environment.
- Replace the framework files in the existing server directory, merging the package as you did during the initial installation.
- Start the server and run
oxide.version. - Review the console for framework errors, then test each installed plugin. Update or remove plugins that have not yet been made compatible.
- Only after the framework and plugins pass testing should you reopen the server to regular players.
Keep the previous framework package and backup until you know that the updated server can load the world and required plugins. If a rollback is necessary, stop the server, restore the saved files, and return to the previously working game/framework combination rather than mixing files from two versions.
Troubleshooting common installation failures
oxide.version produces no response
- Verify that the package was copied into the directory used by the startup command, not merely into a nearby game folder.
- Check that you selected the package for the server’s operating system. Linux servers require the Linux-specific download.
- Confirm that the framework build matches the current 7 Days to Die game build listed on the uMod page.
- Read startup logs for permission errors, missing files or an early server crash, then restart after correcting the cause.
The plugin is ignored
- Move the file into the active
oxide/pluginsorumod/pluginsdirectory. - Restore the original
.csextension and remove accidental extensions such as.cs.txt. - Extract the plugin if you uploaded a zip archive; the archive itself is not a plugin.
- Restart or reload the plugin and watch the console for a load message.
The plugin reports compiler or dependency errors
- Read the first error line and identify the missing type, hook or library rather than repeatedly restarting.
- Install the dependency specified by the plugin author, using the same plugins directory.
- Check whether the plugin has a release for the current game/framework build. If it does not, keep it disabled until an updated version is available.
- Remove the failing file from the plugins directory or restore the last known-good backup if it prevents a clean startup.
The server broke after a game update
Obtain a framework build updated for the new game version, then retest with plugins enabled in a controlled order. A plugin error after an update does not necessarily mean the uMod installation is wrong; the plugin may depend on an API that changed. Check the plugin’s compatibility notes and dependencies before replacing unrelated server files.
Linux startup fails while Windows instructions worked
Use the Linux-specific uMod package and follow the Linux guidance on the official 7 Days to Die page. Do not copy Windows binaries into a Linux instance. Also verify file permissions and that the panel or startup script points to the directory where the Linux server is installed.
Hosted-panel considerations
Managed 7 Days to Die server hosting can simplify installation when the panel offers an Oxide or uMod installer. Select the installer only after confirming that it targets the current game build. Once it reports completion, use the panel console to run oxide.version, then upload a test plugin through the panel’s file manager or FTP account.
Panel labels differ: a control may be called “Mod manager,” “Plugins,” “Oxide,” or “uMod.” If an automated installer is unavailable, the fallback is ordinary file access—stop the instance, upload and extract the matching package into the server root, start it, and verify the version. Ask the provider where the active instance directory is when the file manager exposes several folders.
Check the provider’s backup scope before relying on it. Some plans protect only the server image, while saves, plugin configuration and custom files may require a separate snapshot or manual download. Confirm that the panel exposes a live console or RCON path so you can run verification commands and diagnose plugin errors remotely.

When uMod is not the right next step
If your goal is a client-side overhaul that changes assets or requires every player to install a mod pack, a server plugin framework alone may not provide it. uMod is appropriate for server-side plugins that expose their features through the dedicated server. Read the individual plugin’s requirements before assuming that a framework installation supports a particular type of mod.
For ordinary server-side administration and gameplay plugins, however, the reliable sequence is consistent: match the build, merge the files into the real server directory, verify with oxide.version, install unchanged plugin files, and use the console and logs as the source of truth when something fails.
