To add overlays, alerts, or widgets to a YouTube Live production in OBS Studio, create them with a provider such as StreamElements or Streamlabs, copy the provider’s overlay URL, then add it to your scene as an OBS Browser source. Position and layer the source, and trigger a test alert before you go live. OBS does not generate alerts itself; the provider supplies them.
Choose how to add the overlay or alert
The usual workflow is to configure a hosted overlay or widget, then load its URL in OBS. A provider may also offer a software plugin, but the Browser source route does not require one. Compare options based on the widgets and event types you need, how you want to set them up, the available appearance controls, and how you can test and reuse them. Provider dashboards and features can change, so follow the current labels shown in your account.

| Approach | What it does | When it may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Browser source with a provider URL | Loads a hosted overlay or widget into an OBS scene. | A general-purpose route for third-party alerts and overlays that does not require a plugin. |
| StreamElements overlay | Combines widgets such as alerts, chat, labels, and goals in an overlay editor, then renders them through a Browser source. | Useful when you want to configure several visual or event widgets in one hosted overlay. StreamElements describes a no-code editor for basic setups. |
| Streamlabs Alert Box | Adds an alert widget through Streamlabs Desktop, its OBS plugin, or a browser source in other streaming software. | Useful if you already use Streamlabs alert customization and test tools. The plugin is optional if you use a Browser source. |
Add a hosted overlay or widget in OBS
- Select the scene. In OBS, choose the scene where the overlay should appear. Each scene has its own sources, which determine what is visible in its preview and output.
- Configure the widget with its provider. In the provider’s dashboard or overlay editor, choose the graphics, widgets, and alert events you want. For example, an overlay may combine alerts with chat, labels, or goals.
- Copy the overlay URL privately. Copy the URL provided for the overlay. Treat it like a private account token: StreamElements warns that overlay URLs contain sensitive tokens, so do not post or share yours publicly.
- Add a Browser source. In OBS, find the Sources dock, select the plus button, choose Browser, and give the source a recognizable name if helpful. Paste the provider URL into the source properties.
- Set the source dimensions. Set width and height to suit both the overlay and your stream canvas. StreamElements lists 1920×1080 as its default unless the source resolution has been changed; that is a provider default, not a requirement for every layout. Its guidance suggests 30 or 60 FPS depending on your stream settings and computer capability.
- Position and layer the source. Drag it into place in the OBS preview. In the Sources list, items higher up appear above items below them. Put the overlay above the camera, game, or background it should cover; move it lower if it should sit behind another source.
- Test before broadcasting. Use the provider’s dashboard or software to trigger a test event. Check the animation, sound, size, position, and event selection. Streamlabs documents test functions in its dashboard and software.
Check appearance and scene behavior
Fit the overlay to the canvas
If an element is cut off or appears in the wrong place, check the Browser source width and height, then reposition it in the preview. A 1920×1080 source may be a useful starting point for a matching canvas, but adjust it to the actual overlay and scene rather than treating that default as universal.
Keep the source order intentional
OBS renders higher sources above lower ones. If an alert covers a camera or game when it should not, adjust its place in the Sources list. If a scene should not show an alert at all, check that scene’s sources rather than assuming another scene’s setup applies to it.

Avoid duplicate alert playback
If the same alert box has been added more than once across scenes, duplicate visuals or audio can result. StreamElements documents using one alert box across scenes and removing or hiding duplicates to avoid duplicate audio.
Troubleshoot common problems
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| Nothing appears | Confirm the Browser source is enabled in the selected scene and that its properties contain the correct provider URL. Trigger the provider’s test function to check whether the overlay can display an event. |
| The overlay is clipped or misplaced | Adjust the Browser source dimensions to the canvas and overlay, then reposition it in the OBS preview. |
| The overlay hides the camera or game | Change its position in the Sources list. Sources higher in the list render above lower sources. |
| The wrong alert style or event appears | Check the active theme and the settings for that specific event, save any changes, then test again. Streamlabs identifies active themes and event settings as checks for unexpected alerts. |
| Alerts or audio play twice | Look for duplicate alert sources across scenes. Remove or hide duplicates, or use one alert box across scenes as StreamElements documents. |
| You are unsure whether an overlay URL is safe to share | Keep it private. Provider overlay URLs can contain sensitive tokens linked to your account. |
Or let it run in the cloud
Overlays and alerts belong to the OBS scene that renders them. For a different task—keeping uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream—StreamNeo runs the playback in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo plays the uploaded video; it does not stream from a camera.
