The quickest way to add tracking in WooCommerce is to open WooCommerce → Orders, edit the order, use its Shipment Tracking panel, select the carrier, enter the tracking number, confirm the shipped date, preview the destination, and save. Customers can then see the provider, number, date, and carrier link on supported My Account pages and order emails.

Saving a tracking record does not send an email by itself. WooCommerce’s documented workflow includes the saved tracking details when the order is moved to Completed and the Completed Order email is sent. Stores that need a visual delivery timeline, configurable tracking notifications, multiple fulfillment integrations, or automatic entry can use a specialized extension or the REST API instead.

What WooCommerce order tracking actually does
Tracking is data attached to an order. A tracking record normally contains four pieces of information:
- The shipping provider’s name.
- The carrier’s tracking number.
- A link that opens the provider’s tracking page.
- The date the shipment was handed to the carrier.
Changing an order from Processing to Completed does not create a tracking record. You must add the provider, number, link, and shipped date through the Shipment Tracking panel or an API request. Once saved, WooCommerce can expose those values in customer-facing account and email surfaces supported by the tracking implementation.

Before you add a tracking number
- Confirm that the order has actually been handed to the carrier. A label created but not collected can show “label created” rather than an in-transit event.
- Copy the tracking number exactly, including letters, leading zeroes, and hyphens. Do not add spaces unless the carrier uses them.
- Identify the provider that owns the number. A number from a postal service will not resolve correctly on a courier’s tracking page.
- Have the customer’s order status and email workflow ready. Adding tracking and sending a notification are separate actions.
- If you ship an order in several parcels, collect every tracking number before deciding whether one record or several records are needed.
Method 1: Add tracking manually with the Shipment Tracking panel
The documented no-code workflow uses the Shipment Tracking extension and is suitable when staff enter tracking after fulfillment.
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to WooCommerce → Orders.
- Select the order that has shipped.
- Open the order’s Shipment Tracking panel.
- Choose the shipping provider from the provider list.
- Enter the complete tracking number.
- Confirm or edit the shipped date so it reflects the handoff to the carrier, not merely the date the order was packed.
- Preview the destination or tracking link. Check that it opens the carrier’s HTTPS tracking page and that the URL is for the correct provider.
- Save the tracking item, then save or update the order if the screen presents a separate order-save control.
The extension adds the provider, number, tracking link, and shipped date to the order record. The saved values can be displayed on the customer’s My Account order page and inserted into supported order emails.
What the customer sees
On a supported My Account order view, the customer can see the carrier name, tracking number, shipped date, and a link to the carrier. Selecting the link takes the customer to the carrier’s own tracking service, where scans and delivery estimates are maintained.
Why the customer did not receive an email immediately
Saving the tracking item does not send an email. In the documented workflow, change the order to Completed when fulfillment is complete. WooCommerce then sends the Completed Order email, and the saved tracking information is included when that email integration is enabled.
If your store marks orders Completed before adding tracking, the status transition has already happened. In that case, adding a tracking record alone may not trigger a second Completed Order email; use your store’s normal customer-notification process or a notification-focused extension rather than repeatedly changing statuses.
Adding a carrier that is not listed
You do not need to wait for a built-in carrier entry. In the Shipment Tracking panel, choose Custom Provider, enter the provider’s name, and supply the provider’s complete tracking URL.

- Choose Custom Provider in the provider field.
- Type the name customers should recognize, such as the local courier or freight company.
- Paste the full HTTPS tracking URL pattern or destination requested by the extension.
- Enter the tracking number and shipped date.
- Preview the link with a real shipment number before saving.
- Save the record and test the link from the customer-facing order view.
Use an HTTPS destination controlled by the carrier or a trusted logistics provider. A misspelled domain, an HTTP-only page, or a link that sends every customer to a generic homepage creates support and security problems. If the carrier requires a special query-string format, verify that the extension produces a working URL for the exact number format you use.

When a timeline extension is better than a carrier link
A carrier link answers “Where can I look up this parcel?” A timeline answers “Which fulfillment stage is it in?” If your support team receives questions about picking, packing, dispatched, in transit, out for delivery, or delivered, a timeline-oriented extension may communicate more clearly.
The documentation for Order Tracking for WooCommerce describes up to five timeline stages, customizable tracking emails, and pickup notifications shown in My Account and sent by email. Define stages that match your operation rather than copying carrier scan events you cannot reliably receive. For example, a store could use Order confirmed, Packed, Collected, In transit, and Ready for pickup. The carrier’s own link should remain the authoritative source for scan-level detail.
When a notification-focused extension is better

It is worth considering when your process needs a notification immediately after staff enter a tracking number, or when status changes must follow a rule that differs from WooCommerce’s standard Completed Order email behavior.
Map the desired event before configuring it: tracking record added, parcel picked up, shipment in transit, delivered, or order completed. Avoid sending the same event through both the extension and WooCommerce’s native email system, or customers may receive duplicate messages.
Handling one order with multiple packages
A single order can be fulfilled in more than one parcel. The shipment-tracking data model uses tracking items, and its API provides operations to list, retrieve, and delete tracking items for an order. That makes separate records the safer representation when each parcel has its own number or carrier.

- Create one tracking item per parcel when the customer needs to follow parcels independently.
- Use the same shipped date only when the parcels left on the same day; otherwise record each parcel’s actual handoff date.
- Test the My Account and email presentation with two records before enabling split shipments for all customers.
- If your extension’s interface only displays one record, verify its version’s multi-package behavior rather than assuming the second number will be visible.
Automate tracking with the WooCommerce REST API
Automation is useful when a warehouse, ERP, shipping platform, or marketplace already knows the tracking number. WooCommerce documents API-key authentication and recommends the current v3 API for new integrations under /wp-json/wc/v3/. Create API keys with the minimum permissions your integration needs, keep the secret off the browser and source-control repositories, and use HTTPS for every request.
General integration sequence
- Generate WooCommerce REST API credentials for the integration user.
- Authenticate from your server, not from client-side JavaScript.
- Receive the fulfillment event from the warehouse or carrier system.
- Validate the order ID, provider, tracking number, date, and destination URL.
- Post the tracking item to the shipment-tracking endpoint.
- Record the response and an idempotency key in your integration log so retries do not create unintended duplicates.
- Check the order in the dashboard and, if required, invoke your notification or status workflow separately.

}The extension expands %1$s with the tracking number and displays the resulting link to customers. Treat the URL template as untrusted configuration until you test it with a real-format number. A syntactically valid request can still send customers to the wrong path.
Listing, retrieving, and deleting tracking items
The shipment-tracking API supports listing all tracking items for an order, retrieving a specific item, and deleting an item. Use listing after a split shipment to confirm that every parcel was stored. Retrieve an individual item when reconciling a warehouse event. Delete only a demonstrably incorrect record, then add the corrected one and document the change for support staff.

- Place a test order in the same status sequence your staff will use.
- Add a real-format tracking number and verify the carrier link on desktop and mobile.
- Open the order as the customer in My Account and confirm the provider, number, and shipped date are readable.
- Move a test order to Completed and confirm the Completed Order email contains the tracking information.
- Test a custom provider with an HTTPS URL and a number that follows the carrier’s actual format.
- Test two tracking records if you split orders into multiple parcels.
- For API integrations, test authentication failure, an invalid order ID, a duplicate fulfillment event, and a carrier URL validation failure.
- Check that staff know whether a notification is generated by WooCommerce, a tracking extension, or an external system.
Troubleshooting common failures
The tracking link opens the wrong page
Recheck the selected provider and the URL template. Compare the generated URL with one copied from the carrier’s own tracking site. For a custom provider, confirm that the tracking number replaces %1$s in the intended path or query parameter.

The customer sees tracking but receives no email
Remember that saving tracking does not send an email. Verify whether the order transitioned to Completed after the tracking record was saved, whether the Completed Order email is enabled, and whether another extension or mail service suppressed the message.
The carrier is missing from the provider list
Use Custom Provider and a complete HTTPS tracking URL. If the carrier cannot provide a stable tracking page, show the number and explain the lookup method in your normal shipping communication instead of inventing a URL.
The API request authenticates but tracking is not visible
Confirm that the shipment-tracking extension’s endpoint, not only the general WooCommerce orders endpoint, received the request. Check the order ID, request body field names, date format, and API response. Then inspect the order in the dashboard and use the tracking-items list endpoint to verify persistence.
Customers see duplicate or contradictory status messages
Identify every system that sends mail or changes order status. Disable overlapping triggers, define one owner for each event, and test the complete sequence with a new order before changing live workflows.
Recommended decision
Choose the Shipment Tracking extension for straightforward carrier names, numbers, links, shipped dates, My Account display, and supported email inclusion. Choose a timeline extension when customers need visible fulfillment stages rather than only a carrier lookup link. Choose a notification-focused extension when message timing and status rules are the main problem. Choose the REST API when another system already owns fulfillment data and your team can secure, test, and monitor an integration.
Whichever route you use, add tracking to the order record, validate every carrier link, and treat email delivery as a separate workflow. That combination gives customers a useful link without implying that a status change alone created shipment tracking.
