Windows 11 Photos has no documented control for adding or removing an AI-generated watermark. Microsoft does provide watermark settings for eligible content generated or altered with Microsoft 365 AI, but those account settings are not a universal watermark switch for pictures you open or edit in Photos. If a visible mark is already in an image, Microsoft’s cited guidance does not provide a Photos command to erase it.
What the watermark settings do—and do not do
Microsoft documents visual watermark controls in account privacy settings for Microsoft 365 AI-generated or AI-altered content. The route depends on whether you use a personal Microsoft account or a work or school account. Neither route promises to stamp every local image edited in Photos.

A visible overlay, such as an icon or “AI-Generated” text, is also different from provenance information stored in an image’s metadata. Microsoft says AI disclosure information may be added to file metadata even when visual watermarks are turned off. For Microsoft Photos Designer edits, Microsoft says C2PA content credentials help identify AI editing or generation. Turning off a visual watermark therefore should not be treated as removing metadata or other provenance information.

Turn on a visual watermark for eligible Microsoft 365 content
Personal Microsoft account
- Sign in to the Microsoft privacy dashboard with your personal Microsoft account.
- Open Privacy > Empower your productivity > Copilot.
- Turn on Include a watermark when content from Microsoft 365 is AI-generated.
This setting applies to the Microsoft 365 AI content described by Microsoft, not arbitrary image files opened in Photos. Microsoft Support says, “You can’t customize the placement or the wording of the watermark.”

Work or school account
- Sign in at myaccount.microsoft.com using your work or school account.
- Open My Account > Data and Privacy > Data options.
- Under Watermarks for AI-generated content, turn on Show watermark.
See Microsoft’s work or school account guidance for the scope of this setting. It concerns eligible Microsoft 365 AI-generated or AI-altered content; it is not a general Photos watermark tool.
Can Photos remove a watermark already visible in an image?
Microsoft’s cited instructions do not document a retroactive erase action or a Photos command specifically for watermark removal. Switching off an account watermark setting is not documented as a way to remove a mark already present in a file.

Photos has editing tools, and its online Edit with Designer experience includes options such as crop, object selection, and generative erase. Microsoft does not describe those as a watermark-removal feature or guarantee that they will remove a watermark cleanly. See Photos editing guidance and Edit images with Designer. Altering visible pixels also does not establish that embedded provenance information has been removed.

On Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft documents Photos features such as Restyle Image and Image Creator. They are AI image tools, not controls for managing a watermark. Microsoft’s Photos AI FAQ describes their account and internet conditions and includes a temporary availability update for South Korea; availability can vary.

Edit with Designer is an online experience that requires an internet connection. Its AI features require a personal Microsoft account, and Microsoft lists English, Spanish, French, Brazilian Portuguese, German, and Italian as supported languages. These requirements apply to Designer’s AI features, not to the Microsoft 365 account watermark setting. Microsoft’s Designer FAQ says Designer is free to use, with a subscription potentially required for more frequent creation.
