To adjust background blur on a photo taken in Portrait mode, open it in Samsung Gallery and look for the background-effect editing control. On some versions, open the photo’s Details view using the i icon and check for an effect control or suggestion. Samsung confirms that Portrait-mode effects can be edited after capture, but the menu and availability vary by phone and software version.
First, identify the kind of photo effect you want
“Portrait effect” can mean either changing the background blur on a photo captured in Portrait mode or trying to add portrait-style blur to an ordinary photo. Samsung documents editing the background effect after taking a Portrait-mode picture. A Gallery option called “Add Portrait Effect” has also been reported for regular photos, but current Samsung documentation does not establish that it is available on every Galaxy device.

Change the background effect on a Portrait-mode photo
- Open Samsung Gallery and select the photo taken in Portrait mode.
- Look for the background-effect editing control in the photo view. If it is not visible, open the photo’s Details or information view with the i icon and check for a background-effect control or suggestion. The exact label and location can differ by Gallery version. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 user guide says, “You can also apply a background effect and edit it after taking a picture.” Samsung’s Portrait mode guidance also describes editing the effect after capture.
- Choose an available effect or adjust its strength using the controls shown for that image. Options may vary; do not assume every Galaxy has the same set of effects.
- Save the edited image using the Gallery’s save control, if prompted.
Samsung does not provide a complete current, model-by-model compatibility list for this post-capture feature. Its support guidance and Galaxy Z Fold6 user guide establish the workflow, while specific controls can depend on the device and software.

Possibly, depending on your phone and software. A Samsung Members community post reports a Gallery menu item named “Add Portrait Effect” for a regular photo containing a person. That is a user-reported interface example, not a guarantee of current or universal support. The community post does not establish that the option will appear on other models or software versions.

If your regular photo has no such option, the current official Samsung material cited here does not provide a universal way to add Portrait blur afterward. Check your phone’s model and software version before following device-specific menu advice.
Portrait Studio is a different feature
Portrait Studio creates AI-styled portraits, such as cartoon or painting-like treatments; it is not simply a control for changing background blur. Samsung says Portrait Studio requires Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1 or higher, and that availability varies by device and software version. See Samsung’s feature guidance for eligibility details.

Why the blur may look wrong
Samsung notes that background blur may not apply properly in several situations. In particular, results can be affected by:
- Insufficient light.
- Movement by the phone or the subject.
- A subject that is thin or transparent.
- A subject whose colour is similar to the background.
- A very plain subject or background.
These are capture-quality limitations: editing cannot always recover clean subject separation if the original image does not clearly distinguish the subject from its background. Samsung’s Portrait mode guidance describes these conditions.

If you cannot find the control
- Check whether the image was captured in Portrait mode; the documented post-capture adjustment applies to Portrait pictures.
- Check your Galaxy’s model and software version, then install any available update. Samsung says features, settings, and menu options can vary by device and software version. See Samsung support.
- If the picture was taken in ordinary Photo mode and “Add Portrait Effect” is absent, do not assume another Gallery menu will be available on your phone. The reported community option is not confirmed as universal.
