The playlist repeats only while your computer, OBS, video files, power, and internet connection keep working; OBS does not guarantee unattended uptime or automatic recovery.
What you need before setting up the playlist
- OBS Studio to play and encode the videos.
- VLC media player for OBS’s VLC Video Source. Match the installations: OBS documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Local video files you can play and have the rights to use, including their audio.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-stream setup requirements.
OBS documents VLC Video Source as the playlist option: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” Its media-source documentation also describes Media Source for playing an individual file.
Add and loop multiple videos in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC so OBS can use the VLC libraries.
- Choose a scene. In OBS, select the scene for the nature stream, or create one for it.
- Add the playlist source. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Name the source if you want, then add the local video files to its playlist.
- Set the playback order. Arrange the files in the sequence you want. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; enable it if you want playback in a randomized order.
- Keep the playlist repeating. Make sure Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents this as on by default, but check the setting before going live.
- Fit the picture to the scene. Check the preview and adjust the source so the video fills the canvas as intended. Inspect the files’ playback and order rather than assuming every file will display or sound as expected.
- Test the whole sequence. Watch the playlist in OBS through its end and restart, and check the resulting YouTube output using an appropriate test setup before a public broadcast. This is a practical quality-control step, not a guarantee of continuous operation.
For a single repeating file, OBS’s separate Media Source has a Loop option, which defaults off. For several files in one sequence, use VLC Video Source and Loop Playlist.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or select the stream setup there.
- Use OBS as the encoder and enter the stream key from YouTube’s stream setup into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: do not show or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check Live Control Room to confirm YouTube is receiving the feed. Start the broadcast in YouTube when the preview and stream status are ready.
- Keep OBS open and monitor the stream. A looping playlist repeats media; it does not keep a computer powered, restore a failed home connection, or restart an encoder after a machine problem.
YouTube distinguishes a continuous transmitted feed, or stream, from the broadcast viewers watch. Its Live Streaming API documentation, last updated 2026-09-14, describes a 24/7 feed that can continue while a separate broadcast is started and completed. This distinction matters when managing an ongoing feed separately from individual live events.

Choose the right playback and delivery option

For a straightforward multi-video nature stream, the VLC playlist source solves the playback problem; choosing HLS changes delivery requirements, not how OBS loops the files.
Keep the stream eligible and the content rights-safe
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-stream restrictions within the previous 90 days. Its help page lists platform limits of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key; these are limits, not recommendations to run multiple streams. Confirm current details in YouTube Help.
- Use footage and audio you are entitled to stream. YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Nature footage can still contain protected music, narration, or other material, so confirm the rights for every element. These general rules do not determine whether a particular license covers your use.
- Do not assume looping makes content eligible for monetization. Copyright compliance and eligibility under YouTube’s monetization policies are separate questions. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies; an uninterrupted loop does not itself establish originality or monetization eligibility.
Troubleshoot common playlist problems
VLC Video Source is missing or does not play
Check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS: OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Close and reopen OBS after installing VLC, then check the source again.

The playlist stops after the last video
Open the VLC Video Source properties and turn on Loop Playlist. If you used Media Source instead, its separate Loop option must be enabled for a single file.
Videos play in an unexpected order
Review the playlist order and turn off Shuffle Playlist for a deliberate sequence. If shuffle is wanted, keep it on and verify the result in a test.

YouTube is not receiving the OBS feed
Check that OBS is using the stream key for the selected YouTube stream setup and that the key has not been reset or mistyped. Confirm OBS is actively streaming and inspect the status and preview in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast.
The stream goes offline even though the playlist loops
Looping controls media playback, not system availability. Check whether the computer slept or shut down, OBS closed, power failed, the files became unavailable, or the internet connection dropped. Restore the failed component, reconnect OBS to YouTube, and monitor the feed; a local playlist does not provide automatic recovery from those failures.
