What you can put on an MTG calendar
“Release date” can mean several different milestones in Magic: The Gathering. Wizards of the Coast separates those milestones instead of treating them as one universal launch. Decide which ones you want before collecting dates.

The products index separates ordinary Set Releases, Universes Beyond Set Releases, Special Products and Upcoming Sets. Its listings have included Reality Fracture on October 2, 2026, Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit on August 14, 2026, and Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek on November 13, 2026. Treat those as dated listings from the page you viewed, not permanent facts: record the region and the date you retrieved them, and check the current page before importing or sending reminders.
An individual set page can expose several milestones. The Edge of Eternities page, for example, labels Previews, Story, Debut, Card Previews, Prerelease, MTG Arena, Tabletop and WPN in-store play separately. Enter each milestone as its own event when it matters to you. Combining them into one “set release” entry hides the dates people usually want reminders for.

Choose a calendar setup before collecting dates
One calendar can hold everything, but separate calendars make visibility and notifications much easier to control. A practical setup is one calendar for broad release and digital milestones and another for local play.

Create the destination calendars in Google Calendar first if you want this separation. During import, choose the intended destination rather than accepting the primary calendar automatically.
Collect authoritative dates
Start with the products index
- Open the Wizards of the Coast MTG products index.
- Review the separate sections for Set Releases, Universes Beyond Set Releases, Special Products and Upcoming Sets.
- For every item you want, copy the displayed title, date, product category, region if shown and the page address.
- Write down the retrieval date. Release schedules can move, so a calendar entry should tell you when its date was captured.
Do not assume that a date shown in an Upcoming Sets list is the only date that matters. Open the product or set page and look for the milestone labels that apply to your scope.
Read each set page for milestone labels
Copy the labels exactly as Wizards presents them. A useful naming pattern is “Set name — Tabletop release,” “Set name — Prerelease,” “Set name — MTG Arena,” or “Set name — Card previews.” This keeps searches and reminders understandable when several events fall in the same week.
- Use an all-day entry for a date with no start time.
- Use a timed entry when the page supplies a start time or a broadcast time.
- Keep separate entries for Prerelease, Tabletop and WPN in-store play rather than inferring one from another.
- Put the exact Wizards page address in the event description so you can verify a change later.
Find local events in the Store and Event Locator
- Open the Wizards Store and Event Locator.
- Set a location, then choose a date or date range. The locator also lets you narrow results to premium WPN stores.
- Open an event result and inspect the venue, start time, format, entry information and time zone.
- Use the event or store details page’s button to add that event to your personal calendar when it is available.
- Verify the saved entry in Google Calendar, especially if you travel or your calendar uses a different time zone.
The locator is the right source for venue-specific prereleases and Friday Night Magic. A set page can establish that a prerelease or WPN period exists, but only the locator can show which store is running a particular session.

Create an ICS file for a one-time import
Google Calendar accepts .ics and .csv imports on a computer. ICS is usually the clearer choice for MTG schedules because it preserves all-day dates, timed events, descriptions and locations in one standard file.
Use the required calendar wrapper
An ICS file contains one calendar wrapper and one event block for each date. The basic structure is:

END:VCALENDARThe wrapper uses BEGIN:VCALENDAR, VERSION:2.0, a PRODID, one or more VEVENT blocks and END:VCALENDAR. Every event should have a stable UID, a SUMMARY, a DESCRIPTION containing the source page address and either an all-day or timed start and end. Add LOCATION for a store event.
Format all-day release dates correctly
For an all-day date, use DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:YYYYMMDD. The end date is exclusive, so a one-day October 2 event ends with DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20261003. Do not attach a time zone to an all-day value. This prevents a release from shifting to the previous evening when someone views it in another region.
Format timed store events
For a store event, use a start and end that reflect the locator’s local time. A timed value such as DTSTART:20260918T190000 is not enough when attendees live in different time zones; include the applicable time-zone information in the file format you generate, or confirm the time immediately after import. The event description should retain the venue’s details and the source address, while LOCATION should contain the physical store location.

Keep identifiers and descriptions useful
- Make each UID unique and keep it unchanged if you later rebuild the file. That gives you a reliable way to identify the same event in your own source list.
- Use a consistent summary pattern so searches such as “Prerelease” or “Arena” find all matching entries.
- Record whether the date is a tabletop release, Arena launch, WPN play date, preview or local tournament.
- Include the retrieval date and region in your working list when the official page displays them. The description can then explain why a later date differs.
Import the file into Google Calendar on a computer
- Open Google Calendar in a computer browser.
- Open Settings.
- Select Import & export.
- Choose Select file from your computer, then select the
.icsor.csvfile. - Choose the destination calendar. If you do not choose another calendar, Google says imported events go to the primary calendar by default.
- Click Import.
After the import completes, switch to the destination calendar and inspect several entries. Check that an all-day release occupies the intended date, a store event has the expected time and location, and the description contains the source information you entered. The documented import workflow is a computer workflow; do not expect the same file-picker path in the mobile apps.

Keeping one file per scope—such as releases, digital milestones and local events—makes that recovery less disruptive.
Subscribe to a public MTG calendar feed
A public calendar URL works differently from an uploaded file. An ICS or CSV import copies a snapshot into your calendar. A subscription points Google Calendar at a feed maintained by someone else, so changes can arrive when that owner updates the feed. Update timing and reliability remain under the feed owner’s control, so continue checking the current Wizards page for important dates.
- Open Google Calendar on a computer.
- In the left panel, find Other calendars.
- Click Add other calendars.
- Choose From URL.
- Paste the public calendar URL and select Add calendar.
The subscribed calendar appears under Other calendars. Use this method only with a genuinely public calendar URL. A page address for a product or event is not automatically a calendar feed; it must return a calendar that Google can subscribe to.
When a subscription is preferable
- Choose a feed when a publisher maintains an ongoing MTG schedule and you want owner-supplied changes.
- Choose an import when you need a private, fixed snapshot or are assembling dates from several official pages yourself.
- Use separate subscriptions or calendars if you want different notification settings for releases and local play.
Add prereleases and local FNM events one at a time
Local events contain information that a global set-release list cannot provide: the store, format, start time and sometimes entry instructions. Use the locator for each event rather than creating a recurring rule from a general release date.

- Filter the locator by your city or travel area.
- Set the date or date range around the prerelease weekend or the Friday you can attend.
- Open the specific event, not just the store’s general profile.
- Compare the event’s format and start time with your plans.
- Click the calendar button on the event or store details page when available.
- In Google Calendar, change the destination calendar if the button created the entry on the primary calendar.
- Add a travel buffer or reminder only after confirming the venue and local time.
Wizards notes that both Event Details and Store Details pages can offer a button to add an event to a personal calendar. If that button is absent, create a timed Google Calendar event manually with the same title, venue, time zone and source page address.

Release announcements and local play have different notification needs. A tabletop release may need a reminder a week ahead; a store tournament may need an alert before departure. Separate calendars let you apply those policies without editing every event.
- Keep all-day release entries free of an arbitrary start time.
- Use timed entries for store events and add the venue in
LOCATION. - Assign Arena and preview milestones to a digital calendar if you do not want them to trigger local-event alerts.
- Hide the local-events calendar when you are planning travel, then turn it back on before a play weekend.
- Share only the calendar that matches the audience: a household may need store locations, while a wider group may need only set releases.
Maintain dates when Wizards changes the schedule
Imported ICS and CSV events are snapshots. If Wizards moves a release, an existing imported entry will not change by itself. A public feed may update, but the timing depends on its owner.
- Revisit the products index and affected set page before major reminders or publication of a shared schedule.
- Compare the current date, milestone label, region and time zone with your saved entry.
- Update the source list and regenerate the ICS or CSV file when a date changes.
- Remove or edit the old imported entry before importing the replacement, so the calendar does not contain both dates.
- For local events, re-open the locator listing because store details can change independently of the set page.
Keep the official page address in every description. It gives you a direct audit trail when an announcement is revised and prevents confusion between a global release and a local event with a similar name.

Troubleshoot common calendar problems
The file will not import
- Confirm that the filename ends in
.icsor.csvand that you are using Google Calendar in a computer browser. - For ICS, check that the file starts with
BEGIN:VCALENDAR, ends withEND:VCALENDAR, and closes everyVEVENTblock. - Check that each event has a start value and that all-day dates use eight digits in
YYYYMMDDform. - Remove malformed line breaks or unsupported characters from a summary and try the import again.
The event appears on the wrong day
An all-day value should use DTSTART;VALUE=DATE and an exclusive next-day DTEND;VALUE=DATE. A timed event needs the local start and end supplied by the store. Review the calendar’s time-zone setting and the event’s displayed zone before changing the date itself.
Duplicate events appear
This usually happens after importing a corrected snapshot without removing the first one. Search the destination calendar by the event summary, delete the obsolete batch and import the corrected file once. Stable UIDs help you track your own source list, but a repeated manual import can still create visible duplicates.
The local event has no venue or time
Return to the event’s detail page in the Store and Event Locator. Do not infer the start time from a set release date. If the calendar button is unavailable, create the event manually and copy the venue, format and time-zone details exactly as shown.
A subscribed calendar has not changed
Google displays the feed maintained by its owner; it does not control when that owner publishes an update. Check the current Wizards page directly, and use a fresh import for a date that cannot wait for the subscription to refresh.

- At the start of a planning cycle, review the products index and create a list of set, Universes Beyond and special-product dates that matter to you.
- Open each relevant set page and add separate entries for previews, story, debut, card previews, prerelease, MTG Arena, tabletop and WPN milestones that are actually listed.
- Generate an ICS file for broad releases and import it into the MTG releases calendar.
- Search the locator for each nearby prerelease and recurring Friday Night Magic session, then add the specific event details to the MTG local events calendar.
- Before sending reminders, recheck the source pages, region and time zone, and replace changed snapshot entries.
This division keeps official global milestones distinct from venue-specific commitments while preserving a source address for every date.
