To show chat beside a prerecorded video after a YouTube broadcast ends, send the video to YouTube as a live stream, keep live chat available, and leave Live chat replay enabled for the archive. YouTube says chat replay is on by default for live streams, but a made-for-kids designation disables live chat, and editing the archived stream in YouTube’s video editor removes chat replay. Check the completed archive on its YouTube watch page before relying on it.
How live chat replay works
Live chat replay displays the conversation alongside the archived video, in the order it appeared during the live broadcast. It is distinct from DVR: chat replay accompanies an archive, while DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a broadcast that is still live. YouTube’s live chat guidance describes replay; its DVR guidance covers pausing and rewinding.

A prerecorded file does not acquire live chat replay simply by being uploaded as a regular video. It must be transmitted to YouTube as a live broadcast, with live chat available, and the resulting archive must retain replay.
Set up the prerecorded live stream
- Choose how to play and send the video. You can use a local encoder to play a looping playlist, or use a continuous-stream service for cloud playout. With a local setup, the computer, media, network connection, and streaming process must remain operating. Cloud playout can avoid keeping a dedicated streaming computer running, but its capabilities and operating conditions depend on the service. These are workflow options, not a performance comparison.
- Create or configure the live event in YouTube Studio. Check that live chat is enabled for the stream. YouTube says live chat is unavailable when a stream is designated as made for kids. Consult YouTube’s live chat settings instructions for current controls.
- Run the broadcast and check chat while it is live. Confirm that viewers can access live chat on the YouTube watch page. If you need an archive, plan how and when the live event will end; an indefinitely running broadcast is not the same as a series of completed short events.
Keep Live chat replay on for the archive
YouTube says Live chat replay is on by default for live streams. For an individual archived video, YouTube’s instructions locate the control in YouTube Studio under the Live tab, then the video’s Customization tab; clear the Live chat replay checkbox to turn replay off. Leave it selected if you want replay to appear. Labels and layout can change, so refer to YouTube Help if the control is in a different place.

Do not edit the archived stream in YouTube’s video editor if chat replay matters: YouTube says streams edited there will not have chat replay.
Check the result where viewers will watch
- After the broadcast ends and the archive is available, open its YouTube watch page.
- Check that the archived video plays and that the replayed conversation appears alongside it.
- If viewers will use an embedded player, set expectations: YouTube says live chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. Do not promise that chat replay will be visible in the embed. See YouTube’s live chat information.
Archive availability is separate from chat replay. The YouTube Live API documentation describes an immediate-playback condition after a broadcast ends that requires both archive and DVR to be enabled: LiveBroadcasts resource documentation. For a 24/7 broadcast, the available YouTube guidance does not establish a universal guarantee that one indefinitely running stream will produce an archive with chat replay. If a completed archive is important, plan the event boundaries and verify the actual archive and replay after ending a broadcast.

Live chat replay is not DVR

YouTube warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. That limit concerns rewinding during the live broadcast; it does not by itself establish whether an archive or chat replay will be available. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Choose local playback or cloud playout
The right approach depends on whether you want to operate the playback process yourself or avoid maintaining a dedicated streaming computer. Neither approach changes YouTube’s archive and chat behavior.
