How to Add Links to Images and Graphics in Word, PowerPoint, HTML and Markdown

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make an image clickable, place a link around it in the application or markup you are using. In Word and PowerPoint, select the picture and use the built-in Link command. On a website, wrap the <img> element in an <a href> element. In Markdown, put the image syntax inside link brackets. The correct steps depend on whether the destination is a web address, a file, a document heading or another slide.

Choose the method that matches your image

Where the image appears How to make it clickable Typical destinations
Microsoft Word Select the picture, then Insert > Link (or right-click > Link) Web page, file or location in the document
Microsoft PowerPoint Select the picture, then Insert > Link > Insert Link Web page, file or another slide
Website HTML Put <img> inside <a href> URL, file, anchor or other site route
Markdown Wrap ![alt text](image) in [ ]( ) URL supported by the Markdown renderer

Link a picture in Microsoft Word

Link to a web page or file

  1. Click the picture itself so the image is selected, not the surrounding paragraph.
  2. Open the Insert tab and choose Link. You can also right-click the picture and choose Link.
  3. Enter the destination in the Address box. Use the complete web address, such as https://example.com/guide, or browse to a file.
  4. Confirm the dialog. Save the document, then test the picture link before sharing it.

Word’s menu labels can vary slightly by edition and version. If the Link command is unavailable or creates a text link instead, click the image again and verify that the picture has selection handles.

Link to a heading or bookmark in the same document

  1. Select the picture and open Insert > Link.
  2. Choose Place in This Document.
  3. Select the listed heading, bookmark or other destination.
  4. Confirm and test the link from the document view.

This is useful for a contents graphic, process diagram or navigation button that should jump to a later section rather than leave the document.

Link a picture in Microsoft PowerPoint

Link to a web page

  1. Select the picture on the slide.
  2. Choose Insert > Link > Insert Link.
  3. In the dialog, select Existing File or Web Page and enter the destination address.
  4. Confirm the dialog and save the presentation.
  5. In Normal view, right-click the picture and choose Open Hyperlink to test it.

Link to another slide

  1. Select the picture and open Insert > Link > Insert Link.
  2. Choose Place in This Document.
  3. Select the target slide and confirm.
  4. Run the slideshow and click the picture to verify that it reaches the intended slide.

When the destination is a local file

A presentation can link to a file stored on your computer, but that file must travel with the presentation. Move or copy the linked file with the PowerPoint deck when transferring it to another computer. Test the link on the computer and folder structure where the presentation will actually be used; a path that works on your machine may not exist elsewhere.

Make an image clickable with HTML

The basic pattern

<a href="https://example.com/destination">
  <img src="graphic.jpg" alt="Description that conveys the image or link purpose">
</a>

The href is the destination. The src is the image file that the browser displays. Keep those roles separate: changing src changes the picture, while changing href changes where a click goes.

Use meaningful alternative text

Write concise alt text that describes the image or its link purpose. For a diagram linking to installation instructions, an appropriate value might be alt="Installation steps". Do not stuff keywords into the attribute or leave it empty when the image is the only content of the link. Google says it generally crawls links represented by an <a> element with an href, and uses a linked image’s alt attribute as anchor text. Meaningful alt text therefore helps both assistive-technology users and search engines understand the destination.

Link to a section on the same page

Give the destination element an id, then use that fragment in the image link:

<a href="#pricing">
  <img src="plan.png" alt="View pricing">
</a>

<h2 id="pricing">Pricing</h2>

The fragment must match the target id exactly. Use a real anchor instead of making a click handler the only indication that an image is interactive; script-only events may not be reliably extracted as links.

Images that are decorative

If an image is purely decorative and the surrounding link already has visible text, an empty alt value (alt="") can prevent redundant announcements. When the image is the link’s only visible label, provide descriptive alt text that states what the link does.

Make an image clickable with Markdown

Standard inline syntax

[![A descriptive image label](graphic.jpg)](https://example.com/destination)

The inner brackets contain the image’s alt text, and the inner parentheses contain the image path. The outer brackets and parentheses turn the rendered image into a link. Replace both the image path and destination with your own values.

Relative and absolute paths

Use a relative image path such as images/graphic.jpg when the image is stored with the document or site, or an absolute HTTPS URL when the renderer must fetch it from another host. Markdown implementations differ, so preview the result in the exact renderer used by your project. The syntax is commonly supported by CommonMark, GitHub, Obsidian, VS Code and Pandoc, but an individual platform can impose its own security or path rules.

Or skip the browser setup

If the image you need is a capture of a web page, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one API request. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets, and lets you turn each cleanup step off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, with the result identified by X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' }); const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also provides full-page captures with lazy images loaded, element capture by CSS selector, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, selector hiding, waits for selectors or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted to ease migration. An MCP server supplies take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Test and troubleshoot image links

The image is not selectable in Word or PowerPoint

  • Click the visible picture, not its caption, text box or slide background.
  • Use the right-click menu on the picture and confirm that Link appears.
  • If the image is behind another object, use the selection pane or temporarily move the covering object.

The link opens the wrong place

  • Reopen the Link dialog and inspect the complete address, including the protocol and spelling.
  • For internal Word destinations, confirm that the heading or bookmark still exists.
  • For PowerPoint, verify the selected slide number after rearranging slides.

A PowerPoint link works only on one computer

The target is probably a local file path. Place the linked file with the presentation and recreate the link if the folder structure changed. Test after copying the complete set to the delivery computer.

The HTML image displays but is not clickable

  • Check that the <img> is nested inside an <a href="..."> element and that both tags are closed.
  • Inspect the rendered page, not just a template file, for a missing or malformed href.
  • Remove an overlay or CSS element that might be intercepting pointer events.
  • Do not rely solely on a JavaScript click event when a normal anchor can express the destination.

The Markdown image is broken or not linked

  • Check the image path, filename capitalization and parentheses.
  • Ensure the outer link uses the exact form [![alt](image)](destination).
  • Preview in the target Markdown renderer because platforms can restrict remote images or raw HTML.

Accessibility or SEO checks fail

Confirm that the image-only link has concise, descriptive alt text that explains the destination or action. Avoid repeating nearby visible text and avoid keyword lists. If the image is decorative and another link label is present, use an empty alt value so the same destination is not announced twice.

Practical checklist before publishing

  • Select the image itself before adding the link.
  • Confirm the destination is correct and reachable.
  • Test external links, internal headings and slide links in the mode your audience will use.
  • Keep local files beside a PowerPoint presentation when the deck moves between computers.
  • Use a real HTML anchor with an href.
  • Add descriptive alt text when the image communicates the link label.
  • Preview Markdown in the actual renderer and check relative paths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an image link different from linking the image file itself?

Yes. The image file is the content loaded by src (or the Markdown image path), while the link destination is the address in href or the outer Markdown link. You can keep the same image and change where it leads.

Can one image link to two destinations at once?

A single anchor has one destination. To offer separate destinations, use separate linked images, add visible text links, or divide a graphic into distinct linked regions with an appropriate accessible structure.
