How to Add Like Reactions to WordPress Posts

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can add like reactions to WordPress posts with Jetpack or WP ULike. Jetpack offers a setting and a Like block; WP ULike supports automatic display, a block, and a shortcode. Choose based on who can vote, which content types need reactions, and how you want to place the button—then test it on a live post.

Choose a reaction plugin that fits your site

Jetpack Likes Visitors must be logged into WordPress.com to use the Like button. Enable the setting on supported classic-theme setups, or add the Like block in the Site Editor. Supports posts, pages, and public custom post types that support comments. Likes are tied to their URLs and cannot be migrated between sites.
WP ULike Documentation describes an option for guest voting. Automatic display, a block, or a shortcode. Free-plugin documentation covers votes on posts, comments, BuddyPress activity, and bbPress topics. Pro features include emoji reactions and star ratings.
LikeBtn Not stated on its WordPress.org listing. Not stated here; consult the plugin listing and settings for current placement details. The listing describes support for posts, pages, comments, WooCommerce products, BuddyPress, bbPress, UltimateMember, and custom post types. It describes a seven-day trial followed by a free plan; these are vendor listing claims, not independent compatibility or performance tests.

For a straightforward Like button, start with Jetpack if WordPress.com login and URL-bound Likes suit your site. Choose WP ULike if guest voting or placement controls such as a shortcode matter. Check that the plugin supports the content types you actually publish; a posts-only setup will not necessarily add buttons to pages or custom post types.

Add a Like button with Jetpack

Classic-theme settings

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Jetpack → Settings → Sharing.
  2. Find the Like buttons section and switch on Add like buttons to your posts and pages.
  3. Open a post on the public-facing site and confirm the button appears and works.

Jetpack says this setting can show Likes on posts, pages, and public custom post types that support comments. Its documented content-type settings apply to sites that do not use a full site editor theme. See Jetpack’s Likes documentation for its current behavior and constraints.

Block-theme sites

On a block theme, add Jetpack’s Like block in the Site Editor. To show it consistently across posts, insert the block into a template such as Single Posts; add it to an individual layout instead if you want more selective placement. Jetpack’s Like block guide explains the block and the data associated with it.

Add a Like button with WP ULike

Install and enable automatic display

  1. Go to Plugins → Add New, search for WP ULike, then install and activate it.
  2. Open WP ULike → Settings → Content Types → Posts.
  3. Enable Automatic Display, choose a button template and position, and save the settings.
  4. Open one post on the public-facing site to check placement and voting. Then review the plugin’s Statistics if you want to confirm that activity is recorded.

The plugin’s installation guide and first-button instructions describe these steps and the available setup options.

Control which content gets a button

In WP ULike → Settings → Content Types → Posts, the Singular and Post Types settings work as an allowlist: select the types that should display the button. If you want buttons on Pages or a custom post type as well as regular posts, include the relevant type, such as page. The Posts Settings documentation describes these controls.

Use a block or shortcode for manual placement

Instead of automatic display, insert the ULike Button block where you want it, or use the [wp_ulike] shortcode. To target a specific item, the documented form is [wp_ulike id="123"], using that item’s ID. See the shortcode reference for details.

Use one placement method for a given content type. If automatic display and a manually inserted block or shortcode both apply, visitors may see duplicate buttons; disable Automatic Display for that type when using manual placement.

Check login, migration, and privacy expectations

Who can vote and where Likes are stored

Jetpack requires a WordPress.com login to use its Like button, so it is not an anonymous local-voting option. Jetpack also says Likes are tied to a specific URL and cannot be migrated between sites. If you plan to change domains or move content, account for that limitation before choosing it.

WP ULike documents a guest-voting option, which may better fit a site that wants visitors to vote without signing in. Confirm the setting in your installed version and decide whether guest voting suits your moderation and abuse-prevention needs.

Data disclosed for Jetpack Likes

Jetpack’s Like block documentation lists data used for site owners, users, and visitors: IP address, WordPress.com user ID and username, connected site ID, post ID, user agent, timestamp, browser language, and country code. It also says the feature tracks when and which user likes or receives a Like on a post. Review Jetpack’s disclosure and assess the privacy obligations that apply to your site and jurisdiction.

Troubleshoot missing buttons or counts

  • WP ULike button is missing: Check that Automatic Display is enabled for the relevant content type and that the page’s filters or placement rules do not exclude it.
  • WP ULike count does not update: Check the plugin’s “Site uses caching” setting, as its setup guide recommends.
  • Jetpack button stays on “Loading…”: Jetpack identifies Cloudflare Rocket Loader and JavaScript minification by cache or optimization plugins as possible causes. Check those settings and test again; this does not mean every caching configuration causes the issue.
  • More than one button appears: Check for overlapping automatic display, block, and shortcode placement, and remove or disable the extra method.

These are vendor-documented troubleshooting suggestions, not guarantees that a particular plugin or cache setting is the cause. WP ULike’s setup guide and Jetpack’s Likes support page provide further checks.

Free likes versus additional reaction types

WP ULike’s documentation describes free voting features and says Pro adds features such as dislikes, emoji reactions, star ratings, view tracking, profiles, forms, and tools. If a standard Like button is all you need, the documented free plugin covers that use case; check the vendor’s current feature and pricing details before deciding whether to upgrade.
