How to Add Legal Streaming Services to Kodi Using Official Add-ons (Omega 21 Guide)

Use Kodi’s built-in official repository: open the Add-ons area, choose the catalogue’s video add-ons, select a service, and install it. Kodi is a media-centre application, not a streaming subscription, so you still need any account, subscription, or regional access required by the service. The exact catalogue changes with your Kodi version; the examples below are from the Kodi Omega (version 21) directory.

What Kodi provides—and what it does not

Kodi is software for organising and playing media. The reference application does not include paid streaming catalogues, television channels, or a universal hub that combines every service. As Darren Hill wrote in the Kodi Foundation’s “Is Kodi legal?” guidance (21 September 2019), “As supplied, reference Kodi does not ship with any media at all, nor are any media-providing addons pre-installed.”

An add-on is a plug-in that gives Kodi a way to reach a particular online service. Installing one does not transfer ownership of the service’s programmes to Kodi and does not bypass a provider’s sign-in, payment, or territory controls. You use the service under its own terms, just through a Kodi interface where that add-on supports it.

The official repository is the safest place to start because Team Kodi says its contents are vetted and audited. That status concerns the repository and its technical distribution; it does not mean that every add-on is made by, endorsed by, or commercially operated by the streaming provider named in its listing. Some entries are explicitly labelled “unofficial.” Read the individual listing before relying on it.

Before you install anything

Use an official Kodi build

Install Kodi from the Kodi Foundation’s official download route or from a platform source identified there. Kodi runs on multiple operating systems and device types. Hardware is optional and platform-dependent; no particular box, remote, or subscription is required for Kodi itself.

Identify your Kodi version

Open Kodi’s system information page and note the major version. Add-on availability is version-specific. This guide uses the Omega (version 21) directory, so an entry shown here may be absent, renamed, or unavailable on an older installation or a future release.

Have provider credentials ready

Some add-ons work without an account, while others require a free account, a paid subscription, or both. A listing can also be limited to particular countries. Keep the provider’s current terms and supported territory in mind; an add-on’s presence in Kodi is not a promise that your account or location qualifies.

Install a legal service from Kodi’s official catalogue

  1. Launch Kodi and open Add-ons. The label and position can vary slightly by skin and version, but the Add-ons section is the starting point for Kodi’s own catalogue.
  2. Open the catalogue. Choose Get more, Download, or the equivalent catalogue command, then select the video-add-ons category. Do not begin by adding a repository address from a random guide.
  3. Read the service listing. Check the description, maintainer, country notes, account requirements, and the date or status information shown for that add-on. If it says “unofficial,” treat that as a description of the client relationship, not as provider endorsement.
  4. Select Install. Kodi downloads the add-on and its dependencies from the official repository. A confirmation notification normally appears when installation completes.
  5. Open the installed add-on. Return to Add-ons, choose Video add-ons, and select the new entry. The first launch may show a login, pairing, or account-setup screen.
  6. Complete the provider’s sign-in flow. Enter credentials only in the add-on’s documented interface. If the service requires a subscription, activate it with the provider; installing the Kodi client does not create or pay for that subscription.
  7. Test one item before changing settings. Confirm that menus load and that a programme or stream plays in your country. A successful installation only proves that the client was installed, not that every catalogue item is licensed or available to your account.

The official catalogue supports installation inside Kodi and automatic updates. Exact menu wording can change with Kodi releases and skins, but the sequence—Add-ons, official catalogue, video add-on, listing, Install—remains the useful mental model.

Examples in the Kodi Omega (version 21) video directory

The following are examples visible in the Omega directory, not a permanent list or a guarantee of access. Verify each listing at the time you install it.

Add-on example Geography or account note Content description established by the directory What to verify before use
BBC iPlayer Regional availability applies; the directory does not make it universal. Broadcaster service entry; a specific live/on-demand split is not stated here. Supported country, current maintainer, sign-in rules, and whether your Kodi version is supported.
CBC TV Regional availability applies. Broadcaster service entry; the directory does not establish a universal catalogue or playback mode. Country eligibility, account requirements, and current maintenance.
PBS Kids Regional availability applies. Children’s broadcaster entry; individual programme availability can vary. Territory, parental controls, and the listing’s current status.
Red Bull TV Regional availability applies. Service entry; the directory does not promise that every event or programme is available everywhere. Current catalogue, account requirements, and version compatibility.
Canal Digitaal The directory says a subscription is required. Service entry; exact live/on-demand scope is not stated here. Subscription tier, supported territory, and the provider’s current authentication method.
Focus Sat The directory says a subscription is required. Service entry; exact live/on-demand scope is not stated here. Eligible country, subscription status, and current add-on notes.
Cinetree The directory lists Benelux countries and says an account is required. Service entry; the table does not infer a wider territory. Whether your country is included, whether a paid plan is needed, and current login instructions.
Other regional broadcasters Country limits are common and are stated per listing. Varies by provider; do not infer features from the name alone. Read the complete description instead of relying on a third-party list.

“Official repository” and “official provider app” are different concepts. An add-on may be accepted into Kodi’s repository while remaining an independently maintained client. The named broadcaster or service may not support the add-on, and Kodi’s repository listing should not be rewritten as a provider endorsement.

How to judge an add-on before trusting it

Check the repository location

Install from Kodi’s own catalogue whenever the service is available there. Team Kodi’s guidance distinguishes its official repository from third-party repositories. As that guidance states, “As the name suggests, these third party addons and repos are neither produced by, supported by nor endorsed by Team Kodi.” A web page telling you to enable an unknown source is not evidence that the source is safe or legal.

Read the complete listing, not just the title

  • Look for a country or territory statement.
  • Note whether a provider account or paid subscription is required.
  • Check the maintainer and the last visible update or status information.
  • Look for an “unofficial” label and understand that it describes the add-on’s relationship to the provider.
  • Confirm that the listing targets your Kodi major version.

Use the provider’s own terms for the legal boundary

Team Kodi’s legal guidance separates the reference application from the choices a user makes about add-ons and media. It warns that some third-party add-ons provide pirated streams. That is why a repository’s source and the service’s terms matter. This article cannot determine whether a particular viewing choice is lawful in your country; check the provider’s licence terms and local law when in doubt.

Accounts, subscriptions, and regional restrictions

An installation is not a subscription

When a listing says an account or subscription is required, create or maintain it with the service itself. For example, the Omega directory identifies subscription requirements for Canal Digitaal and Focus Sat, and an account requirement for Cinetree. Kodi does not remove those requirements and does not include their fees.

Why a service may appear but still fail to play

Providers commonly enforce location, rights windows, device limits, or account entitlements after the add-on has been installed. A catalogue entry can therefore be visible while a particular programme is unavailable. Treat an “access denied,” “not available in your region,” or empty catalogue message as an eligibility issue first, not as proof that Kodi is broken.

Use only supported authentication methods

Follow the login or pairing instructions shown by the add-on. Do not paste credentials into a script or repository page that is unrelated to the listing. If the provider has changed its sign-in process, wait for the add-on maintainer or provider documentation to describe a supported update rather than installing an unknown replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting common installation and playback problems

The service does not appear in the catalogue

  • Confirm the Kodi major version; the directory differs between releases.
  • Refresh the official repository metadata, then search the video-add-ons category again.
  • Check the listing’s territory notes. Some entries are filtered or meaningful only for particular countries.
  • Do not substitute a similarly named third-party repository without understanding who operates it.

Installation fails or reports a dependency error

  • Install pending Kodi updates from the official source and restart Kodi.
  • Open the add-on’s information page and read the dependency or compatibility message.
  • Remove the failed add-on, restart Kodi, and attempt a clean installation from the official catalogue.
  • If the listing is no longer maintained for your version, choose a currently supported entry rather than downloading an unverified package.

The add-on installs but will not log in

  • Verify the account works in the provider’s own web or device application.
  • Check the add-on description for a required pairing code, browser confirmation, or subscription tier.
  • Make sure the device clock and time zone are correct; authentication tokens can fail when system time is far out of sync.
  • Do not share passwords or one-time codes with an unofficial support page.

Menus load but playback fails

  • Try a different programme to separate a single broken item from a service-wide problem.
  • Check whether the item is restricted to a country, account tier, age group, or rights window.
  • Read the add-on’s current status and maintainer notes in Kodi’s listing.
  • Update Kodi and the add-on through the official channels, then restart the application.

An update changes or removes the service

Online services change their authentication and playback systems, and repository entries can be updated or withdrawn. Automatic updates help when a maintainer publishes a compatible fix, but they cannot guarantee that a provider will continue supporting a Kodi client. If an entry disappears, use the provider’s supported application or website rather than importing an archived package from an unknown source.

Keeping a Kodi setup safe and maintainable

  • Stay on a stable Kodi release. Test add-ons against the major version you actually run; do not assume an add-on built for Omega will behave identically on another release.
  • Keep the official repository enabled. This allows Kodi to receive repository and add-on updates through the application.
  • Review permissions and dependencies. An add-on that requests unrelated access or directs you to an unfamiliar download deserves extra scrutiny.
  • Remove unused add-ons. In Add-ons, open the installed entry’s context or information menu and choose uninstall. Removing a client also removes its Kodi integration; it does not cancel a provider subscription.
  • Back up before major upgrades. Record the services you use and their account requirements so you can reinstall compatible versions if an upgrade changes the catalogue.

Official repository versus third-party sources

For this task, the practical choice is straightforward: use Kodi’s official repository and stop if the service is not listed there. Team Kodi says third-party repositories are not produced, supported, or endorsed by it, and warns that some third-party add-ons provide pirated media. A guide that promises every paid catalogue in one place is describing a different risk profile from Kodi’s official add-on workflow.

That warning is not a blanket legal ruling about every independent project. It is a reason to verify who publishes an add-on, what content it accesses, and whether the provider permits that method. If you cannot establish those facts, do not install it merely because it has a familiar service name.

What to expect on different devices

Kodi supports multiple operating systems and platforms, but the interface, available repositories, and playback capabilities can vary by device. A computer installation may expose options that a television platform does not, while a lower-powered device may struggle with a provider’s high-resolution stream even when the add-on is compatible.

Use the official download route for your platform and prefer a stable release for ordinary viewing. Kodi itself does not promote one hardware item over another, and this setup does not require buying a particular device. Your deciding factors are the platform’s Kodi support, the add-on’s version compatibility, network performance, and the provider’s device policy.

A repeatable checklist for each new service

  1. Confirm that the service is listed in Kodi’s official video-add-on catalogue.
  2. Check your Kodi major version against the listing.
  3. Read the country, account, subscription, and maintainer notes.
  4. Install only through Kodi’s in-app Install action.
  5. Sign in using the provider’s documented flow.
  6. Test playback with an item you are entitled to watch.
  7. Record any provider-specific renewal or account requirement outside Kodi.
  8. Remove the add-on if it becomes unsupported, asks for unexplained credentials, or directs you to an untrusted repository.

Is Kodi legal?

Team Kodi’s answer is a distinction rather than a universal verdict about every user: the reference application is separate from the add-ons a person chooses and the media those add-ons deliver. The official repository is curated and audited according to Team Kodi’s guidance, while third-party sources are outside that endorsement and may include pirated streams.

Your legal position depends on the service, the licence for the content, your location, and how you obtained access. Use services you are entitled to watch, follow provider terms, and seek local legal advice for a situation that requires a definitive answer. Installing Kodi alone does not establish that every future add-on or stream is lawful.

Bottom line

For legal streaming in Kodi, install the official application, identify your version, browse the in-app official video-add-on catalogue, and follow each provider’s account and territory rules. Omega (version 21) includes examples such as BBC iPlayer, CBC TV, PBS Kids, Red Bull TV, Canal Digitaal, Focus Sat, and Cinetree, but availability and maintenance can change. If a service is missing or demands an unknown repository, use the provider’s supported app or website instead of treating Kodi as a universal streaming substitute.
