Before you start: confirm access and rights
Enable livestreaming on the church channel
YouTube requires livestreaming to be enabled for the channel. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s livestreaming setup instructions. Check access before planning a broadcast date.

Clear the video, music, and lyrics for this use
Adding lyrics on screen does not clear the rights to the hymn composition, lyric text, or recording. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may warn the broadcaster, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if it identifies such material. Even when a third-party owner has licensed content, the owner may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID to prevent interruption (YouTube’s live-streaming and Content ID guidance).
YouTube’s Livestream Terms and Conditions put responsibility on the broadcaster to hold the rights needed for worldwide use of live content, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Verify the specific song, lyrics, recording, arrangement, territories, platform, and nonstop replay use with the relevant rights holders or licensors. Owning a copy of a recording or adding lyrics does not establish that those online uses are cleared.

Calling music “free” in a video description does not prevent a Content ID claim. YouTube points to public-domain music or music used with permission, and also identifies YouTube Audio Library and Creator Music subject to their terms and availability; neither option establishes that a particular hymn recording or arrangement is cleared for your church’s livestream (YouTube music guidance).
Build the lyric-and-video scene in OBS
Use Media Source for one recording
- In OBS, create or select a scene for the church stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source. Choose the recorded video file.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source settings if this single recording should repeat. OBS documents Media Source as a way to play local media and loop it (OBS Media Sources).
- Fit the video to the scene and check that its audio is appropriate. Avoid assuming that a file will continue playing correctly until you test its ending and restart behavior.
Use a VLC playlist for several recordings
For a sequence of videos, add a VLC Video Source, select the files in the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to work. OBS documents the playlist and looping option in its VLC Video Source guide. A playlist is useful when the church wants a repeating sequence rather than the same file immediately restarting.

Add and format the lyrics
- In Sources, select + and add a Text (GDI+) source on Windows or Text (FreeType 2) on macOS and Linux.
- Enter the lyric text and position the source over the video. OBS text sources display text in the scene (OBS Text Sources).
- Use a font size that remains readable on a phone-sized preview, and choose strong contrast against the footage. If the image changes behind the text, a subtle background or outline can help maintain legibility.
- Check line breaks and placement against the entire frame so lyrics do not cover important visual content or fall outside the visible area.
A Text Source is a visual overlay: it gives the church control over the appearance and placement, but it does not automatically synchronize words to the music. Update or time the text for the specific recording and verify it during playback.

For designed, always-visible lyrics, use the OBS Text Source overlay. OBS’s VLC Source also has a subtitle option; use timed subtitles when a synchronized subtitle track suits the video. These are production choices, not a substitute for deciding how to meet viewers’ accessibility needs.

A lyric overlay is part of the picture. Captions are a timed text track intended to communicate audio content accessibly. YouTube says live captions must be sent embedded in the video or through supported software, and its subtitle documentation describes timed subtitle files such as UTF-8 SRT (YouTube live caption requirements; YouTube subtitle file guidance). If the congregation needs both visible lyrics and captions, plan and test them as separate tasks.
Connect OBS to YouTube Studio and preview the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder livestream. YouTube’s setup process provides a stream URL and stream key to enter in the encoder (YouTube encoder setup instructions).
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key or connect using the available account workflow. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to the channel.
- Start streaming from OBS, then open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming stream preview.
- Before going public, check that video and audio reach YouTube, the lyric text is readable and synchronized with the recording, and the loop or playlist behaves as intended.
- When the preview is correct, start the broadcast in Live Control Room if the scheduled stream requires that step. Keep the control room available to monitor stream health.
YouTube recommends preparing in advance, previewing in Live Control Room, monitoring audio and video, and using a reliable network. Its guidance does not promise uninterrupted availability (YouTube live-streaming tips).

What a 24/7 setup requires in practice
Looping controls playback; it does not guarantee a continuous broadcast. With OBS, the computer running the encoder, OBS itself, and the network connection must remain available. Decide who will monitor the stream, respond to power or connection failures, and restart it if the encoder or YouTube connection stops. Test the whole path—including what happens after a video ends or the connection drops—before treating it as unattended.

Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a livestream: confirm livestreaming is enabled for the channel; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours (YouTube setup guidance).
- The video does not repeat: confirm Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For multiple files, use VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist; make sure VLC is installed (Media Source; VLC Video Source).
- Lyrics are missing or difficult to read: check that the Text Source is visible and layered over the video, then adjust its size, position, line breaks, and contrast. Preview the result in YouTube, not just in the OBS canvas.
- Lyrics do not match the hymn: the Text Source does not establish timing automatically. Align the text to the recording and watch a full test playback, including transitions between playlist files.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: verify that OBS is using the channel’s current stream key and that the correct stream is selected in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private; replace it in OBS if it has been exposed.
- The stream is interrupted by a rights warning: review the exact recording, composition, lyrics, and permissions. If licensed third-party content is being used, ask the rights holder whether the channel needs Content ID allowlisting; a description label such as “free” is not a remedy (YouTube Content ID guidance).
- The stream stops after a power or network problem: restore the computer and connection, then check OBS and Live Control Room and restart the encoder/broadcast as needed. A loop setting does not provide automatic recovery for a failed local setup.
