You can’t follow a verified set of steps to add an account to Thunderbird for iOS yet. As of October 4, 2026, Mozilla describes the iPhone app as in development; its announcement mentions account setup for services such as Google and Microsoft but does not publish the setup screens or confirm a release date.
What Mozilla has confirmed about Thunderbird for iOS
Mozilla’s October 1, 2026 first look at Thunderbird for iOS describes work toward bringing a native iPhone email app to the App Store. It identifies an account flow being developed for services like Google and Microsoft. That is an indication of planned support, not a public setup guide or confirmation of the complete provider list.

The announcement does not provide released-app instructions, exact menu names, manual server settings, or troubleshooting steps. It also gives no public release date. Those details remain unknown until Mozilla publishes iOS-specific guidance.
What to do when you want to add an account
Wait for Mozilla’s official iOS app and its instructions before attempting account setup. When those instructions are available, check that they apply specifically to Thunderbird for iPhone and your account type. In particular, look for documented sign-in, authentication, and any manual configuration steps rather than assuming they match another version of Thunderbird.

Gmail security: use Google sign-in when offered
Google’s guidance for third-party email clients recommends choosing “Sign in with Google” rather than sharing your Google username and password with an app. Google says Gmail messages and labels can sync with third-party clients. This is general Google account advice; it does not establish which authorization screen or permissions Thunderbird for iOS will use. Why desktop and Android directions do not apply
Thunderbird’s general getting-started guide covers desktop and Android, not iOS. Its account setup steps should not be treated as iPhone instructions: the reviewed iOS announcement does not confirm equivalent screens or settings.

Mozilla names Google and Microsoft as examples for the account flow under development, but does not compare their setup or confirm the full range of supported accounts. Official iOS instructions will need to establish whether sign-in is automatic or requires manual settings, which account types work, how authentication and multi-factor prompts are handled, and what troubleshooting applies.
