You can reduce the risk of losing your Zune music by confirming it is safely stored on your computer—and backing up that computer copy—before trying to install games. The steps depend on whether you have a Zune HD or a non-touchscreen Zune, and the historical Microsoft installation routes may not work today.
First, identify your Zune and protect your music
Zune HD and non-touchscreen Zune players used different game-installation routes. Do not follow one model’s steps on the other. Before changing the player, check that your music files exist on the computer outside the device and are included in the Zune collection.

If the player may hold the only copy, try copying its music into the computer collection first. In the archived Microsoft support instructions, the path is Device > Music; right-click the music and choose Copy to my collection. Check the computer collection afterward to confirm the files are there. This recovery method is not guaranteed for every device or account state.

Microsoft’s archived migration guidance recommends backing up the collection. This preserves another copy if the player or software encounters a problem; it does not guarantee that the player itself will remain unchanged.

Use the route for your model

Install games on a Zune HD
- Connect the Zune HD to the computer and open Zune software.
- If Marketplace is available in your setup, select the desired app or game there.
- Check Sync Options if the item does not sync as expected, then sync it to the player.
Microsoft’s archived Zune HD manual describes connecting the player to a computer and syncing, including the option to drag items to the player. It does not establish that Marketplace still operates today. See the archived Zune HD manual.

Community documentation also describes installing archived app or game packages from the local Applications directory. That method is specific to Zune HD and relies on unofficial files; the guidance does not verify their origin, safety, or integrity. Some apps that depend on external services may no longer work. Do not install a package unless you understand the source and accept those risks. See the community Zune HD app guidance.
Install games on a non-touchscreen Zune
- Connect the player to the computer.
- On the player, open Settings > Device > Player Update.
- Choose Install Games if the option is available.
This is the historical route described in the 2011 Microsoft answer. If the option is absent or the update does not proceed, the available evidence does not establish a supported current alternative for this model.

If Zune software does not detect the player
Community documentation reports that Microsoft decommissioned a server used by Zune software for device communication and describes Windows workarounds. Those are third-party instructions, not current Microsoft support guidance. In particular, avoid network or registry changes unless you understand exactly what they alter and can assess the security and stability risks. See the community connection guidance.
Before troubleshooting, keep the separate computer backup untouched. If you need a replacement USB sync cable, match it to the exact Zune model; compatibility across models was not established in the available manual.

What reverse syncing can and cannot recover
The archived Microsoft migration answer describes copying music from a connected player into the Zune collection, but it does not cover every kind of content. It excludes podcasts, friends, and channels from reverse sync, and says Zune Marketplace videos cannot be backed up to CD or DVD. Do not assume that copying music recovers all device data.
