To add express checkout buttons in WooCommerce, activate a compatible payment gateway, turn on its express methods, choose where to display them, then test with a supported wallet and shopper setup. There is no universal WooCommerce switch: the available buttons and their placement depend on the gateway, product, region, and customer’s device or browser.
Choose a gateway before configuring buttons
Express checkout is supplied by a payment integration. WooCommerce’s Checkout block can render an Express Checkout area, but only when a compatible gateway is active. WooPayments documents Amazon Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link by Stripe, and WooPay; Stripe for WooCommerce’s express-checkout setup documents Amazon Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link. Availability varies by account country, customer location, currency, browser, and product. Pick the integration your store can configure and maintain, then check its compatibility details against your catalog and customers. Buttons can bypass normal checkout fields: WooPayments says Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Amazon Pay may bypass those fields, while Link fills the card form. If checkout depends on required custom fields, test which values are captured at each button location. There is no comparable independent test establishing that either integration converts better.
Add express checkout with Stripe for WooCommerce
- Check HTTPS and domain setup. The entire site must use HTTPS. For Apple Pay, confirm that server port 443 is open and TLS 1.2 or later is supported. The extension manages Apple Pay’s domain-association file, but the domain must also be enabled for Apple Pay and Google Pay on the Stripe account’s payment-method domains page.
- Open the payment settings. In WordPress, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe > Payment Methods.
- Enable methods. Under Express checkouts, select the methods you want and save. Apple Pay and Google Pay share a setting, so enabling or disabling one affects the other.
- Choose button placement and appearance. Use Customize to select supported locations and available call-to-action, size, or color settings. Stripe documents checkout, cart, and individual product pages for Apple Pay and Google Pay; Amazon Pay and Link have fewer appearance controls.
- Keep a standard payment method available. Stripe says express methods generally cannot be offered on their own. Its documented exception is Link when using the Optimized Checkout Suite.

Add express checkout with WooPayments
- In your site dashboard, open Payments > Settings.
- Under Express Checkouts, enable Apple Pay / Google Pay and save. The wallets share a setting.
- Open the associated customization link to choose checkout, cart, or product-page placement and available appearance settings.
WooPayments documents five methods: Amazon Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link by Stripe, and WooPay. Link and WooPay cannot both be enabled at once. The WooCommerce Checkout block’s Express Checkout area appears only when a compatible gateway is active. Why a button may not appear
An enabled method is not guaranteed to appear for every shopper or product. Check the relevant integration’s compatibility rules; Stripe and WooPayments differ, so do not assume the same method, product, or location behaves identically in both.

- Wallet and browser eligibility: Stripe says Apple Pay requires a compatible device and browser, an Apple ID sign-in, and a payment method on the Apple account. Google Pay requires a compatible browser, Google sign-in, and a saved payment method. Amazon Pay also has browser requirements.
- Secure site and domain configuration: Stripe requires the entire site to use HTTPS. Apple Pay additionally requires port 443, TLS 1.2 or later, and domain enablement in Stripe; Google Pay requires Stripe domain enablement. These are Stripe extension requirements, not universal rules for every WooCommerce gateway.
- Region and currency: Stripe Link availability depends on the account country; Amazon Pay availability depends on account country and currency. WooPayments documents WooPay for U.S.-based merchants and customers, and Link for U.S.-based accounts with USD payments.
- Product or cart restrictions: Stripe lists cases where buttons may be hidden, including free products, some pre-orders, composite products, file-upload fields, and certain virtual-product tax settings. WooPayments also documents product-specific limitations; some wallet buttons do not appear on product pages for composite, booking, and Mix and Match items. Check the integration’s current method-and-product matrix for your own catalog.
- Tax and address handling: With Stripe, billing-address-based tax on digital products can prevent an express button from appearing because the customer’s address may not be available before the payment action. Stripe extension 9.5.0 and later has a developer override, but it requires custom code and is not a general WooCommerce setting.
- Inactive or incompatible gateway: The Checkout block only displays its Express Checkout area when a compatible gateway is active.
Test the buttons before launch
- Enable the gateway’s test mode and confirm the methods and placements you intend to use.
- Test a normal, supported product on checkout and on any additional cart or product-page location you selected.
- Check with a compatible browser and wallet account. Stripe’s guidance says Google Pay testing requires adding a Stripe test card to the Google account; Apple Pay uses real card information while test mode prevents a real charge; Amazon Pay requires a sandbox buyer account. Follow the gateway’s current test instructions.
- Repeat with your actual product, cart, tax, and checkout-field configuration. A simple test product may not expose restrictions that apply to real catalog items.
For a missing WooPayments button, enable debug logging and inspect the latest WooPayments log. Its diagnostic message can point to an unsupported product type, a zero total, or stock issues. Link is an inline card-form feature in WooPayments rather than a button, so the button diagnostic does not cover it.
